Yes—AMD increased its representation among Steam’s Windows users during 2024. That is meaningful evidence of a shift in gaming-PC installed base, but it is not a measure of CPU sales or the entire PC market. Valve surveys participating Steam customers; separate shipment data shows AMD also made notable desktop gains in 2024, while Intel remained the larger supplier in the cited commercial figures.
What the Steam survey can—and cannot—say
Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey is a monthly, optional and anonymous collection of information about the hardware and software used by Steam customers. The relevant Windows category is processor vendor, which distinguishes AuthenticAMD from GenuineIntel.
That makes the result a snapshot of participating Steam users’ PCs, not a tally of CPUs sold in a given month. A system can remain in the survey years after its processor was purchased, and the figures can move as participation changes, users return to Steam, people upgrade or replace PCs, or reporting shifts. Steam users are also a gaming-oriented group, not a representative sample of every PC owner.
There is an important limit for reconstructing 2024: Valve’s current historical pages show rolling windows, and the available displayed histories do not provide a complete, clean January-to-December series. Without a consistent archived series, it would be misleading to claim exact January and December values or calculate a precise full-year change. The safe conclusion is directional: AMD’s presence among surveyed Windows Steam users rose during 2024, as part of a longer-term climb. Treat individual monthly movements cautiously.

When comparing Steam numbers, keep the platform filter consistent. Valve pages may show Windows-only figures or data across Windows, macOS and Linux. Those denominators are not interchangeable. The headline processor-vendor table also does not identify individual Ryzen or Core models, nor does it provide a clean desktop-versus-laptop split.
Steam’s installed base versus CPU shipments
Commercial market research gives useful context, but it answers a different question. Mercury Research estimates x86 processor shipments and revenue by segment; Steam records hardware reported by participating customers. Retail rankings, in turn, describe sales at a particular retailer or marketplace rather than the whole industry.

For a concrete commercial comparison, Tom’s Hardware’s report on Mercury Research data put AMD at 27.1% of desktop x86 CPU unit shipments in Q4 2024, up 7.4 percentage points year over year. AMD’s reported consumer-PC unit share was 24.6% that quarter, so Intel still held the majority. AMD’s desktop revenue share was reported at 27.3%; that revenue figure was calculated by AMD from Mercury Research data and should be understood with that attribution, not as an independently audited industry census.

The laptop picture was different. Mercury Research data reported by Tom’s Hardware put AMD at 22.3% of x86 laptop processor shipments in Q3 2024. These shipment figures help show that AMD’s commercial gains were especially notable on desktop, but they cannot tell us how much of Steam’s 2024 movement came from desktops versus laptops.

Why AMD may have gained ground
No single cause is proven by the vendor-level Steam table. Several factors plausibly contributed to AMD’s growing presence among gaming-PC users:
- Gaming-focused Ryzen appeal: AMD’s Ryzen lineup, particularly its X3D gaming processors, built a strong reputation among enthusiasts seeking high frame rates. Steam’s vendor table does not reveal which models users own, so it cannot directly attribute the trend to X3D CPUs.
- Desktop buyer choice: DIY builders and enthusiasts choose a processor directly, making product positioning, availability and platform plans especially visible. A trend in Steam’s gaming audience may reflect this group more strongly than the broader PC market.
- Intel product concerns: Reporting on Mercury’s 2024 results linked AMD’s desktop gains in part to Intel’s 13th- and 14th-generation desktop stability problems and an inventory correction. Those concerns likely affected buyer confidence, but they do not by themselves prove why any particular Steam user chose AMD. - Product-cycle timing: New products and changes in pricing or availability influence purchasing over time. AMD’s 2024 lineup included Ryzen 7000- and 8000-series desktop products, with Ryzen 9000 desktop CPUs arriving later in the year. Such timing can affect adoption, but a survey trend alone cannot isolate its contribution.
Nor was the commercial picture a one-way march. Tom’s Hardware reported that Intel recovered some desktop share in Q4 after Arrow Lake-S launched. A year-end gain for AMD does not mean it won every quarter or displaced Intel from gaming PCs.

What the trend means if you are buying a CPU
AMD’s rising Steam representation is a signal of adoption among gaming-PC users, not a buying verdict. Market share does not establish that every AMD processor is faster, better value or more suitable than every Intel option.

At higher resolutions or when the graphics card is the bottleneck, a more expensive CPU may make little difference to frame rates. Productivity workloads can also change which processor is the better fit.

For an upgrade, verify compatibility with the exact motherboard and BIOS before buying; also check whether the CPU requires new memory, cooling or a platform replacement. For a new build, compare the complete system cost rather than choosing solely from a vendor-share trend. The Steam survey tracks which vendors are represented among its participants—not whether a particular processor is right for your PC.
The measured takeaway
AMD gained ground among Windows Steam users during 2024, and separate commercial data corroborates a substantial AMD advance in desktop x86 shipments. But Steam’s survey is an optional installed-base snapshot, not a shipment report, while commercial market-share figures depend on segment and measurement. The evidence supports a meaningful gain in gaming-PC adoption—not a claim that AMD overtook Intel across the entire PC CPU market.
