AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 23.40.01.10 was an official technical-preview driver for AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), not a current recommended driver. It expanded driver-level frame generation to Radeon RX 6000 and RX 7000 graphics, selected mobile GPUs and Radeon 700M integrated graphics. For most users in 2026, install a current driver from AMD’s support page instead. The preview remains relevant mainly for historical testing, legacy troubleshooting or reproducing an old software environment.

What AMD 23.40.01.10 was

Released as a standalone Windows preview package, Adrenalin 23.40.01.10 gave users early access to AFMF, AMD’s driver-level frame-generation technology. Unlike game-integrated frame generation, AFMF attempted to create additional frames around the frames rendered by a game, without requiring the game developer to add a specific implementation.

The preview supported compatible DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games through HYPR-RX or an AMD Fluid Motion Frames setting. AMD presented it as software for testing and feedback, and its release notes included explicit cleanup and rollback guidance. That preview status matters: it contained active fixes for crashes, stutter and image-quality problems while still listing substantial known issues.

AFMF was intended to make motion appear smoother, but it did not double the game’s underlying rendering performance or simulation rate. Generated frames can raise the displayed FPS while input latency, base FPS and frame pacing remain limited by the original rendered frames.

AMD later incorporated AFMF into the stable Adrenalin 24.1.1 branch. That release described the preview drivers as part of AFMF’s development and superseded 23.40.01.10 for normal use.

Supported hardware and Windows versions

AMD’s release notes listed the following compatibility. Exact availability could still vary by product, laptop manufacturer, firmware, hybrid-graphics configuration and display path.

Category Compatibility listed for the preview
Desktop Radeon RX 7900, 7800, 7700, 7600, 6900, 6800, 6700, 6600, 6500 and 6400 series

Certification information AMD recorded the WHQL test suite as passed, while Microsoft certification was marked not applicable

The 700M expansion was particularly significant for Ryzen laptops and handheld-oriented integrated graphics. However, “Radeon 700M supported” did not guarantee that AFMF would appear on every laptop. OEM driver customization, firmware, hybrid graphics and the GPU driving the display could all affect availability.

On a hybrid-graphics notebook, AFMF had to be supported by the GPU actually driving the display. A compatible secondary GPU was not enough if the active display path used an unsupported GPU. AMD also described the package as a notebook reference driver and warned that an OEM driver could provide better support for system-specific features.

How AFMF worked in this preview

  • APIs: DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games.
  • Activation: Through HYPR-RX or the AMD Fluid Motion Frames control.
  • Default hotkey: Alt + Shift + G.
  • Recommended base performance: AMD advised maintaining at least 60 FPS in the game before enabling frame generation.
  • Display mode: Fullscreen mode was required.
  • VSync: The documented configuration required VSync to be disabled.
  • Borderless mode: On Windows 11, AMD suggested enabling Optimizations for windowed games to improve compatibility.
  • Monitoring: AFMF status was visible in the AMD Software in-game overlay, and the output rate could be viewed with AMD’s Performance Metrics Overlay.

Third-party monitoring tools were not supported for displaying generated FPS at that stage. AFMF could also dynamically disable generation during fast visual motion to reduce image-quality problems. Consequently, the feature was not equivalent to rendering every frame twice and would not necessarily remain active continuously.

AMD recommended pairing AFMF with Radeon Anti-Lag because frame generation can add latency. Anti-Lag could help reduce the impact, but it did not guarantee the same responsiveness as native rendering.

Why the FPS number needs interpretation

A useful AFMF test should record both the native frame rate and the generated output rate. If a game renders at 60 FPS and AFMF produces additional displayed frames, the output may look smoother, but the game is still receiving input and producing simulation frames at roughly the native rate. The displayed number is therefore not the same as native GPU performance.

That distinction is most important in competitive shooters, fighting games and other timing-sensitive titles. Higher displayed FPS may improve perceived motion on a high-refresh display, while added processing and frame-generation latency can make controls feel less immediate. Artifacting, uneven frame pacing and scene-dependent disabling can also reduce the benefit.

AMD later advertised improvements of up to 97% at 1080p and 103% at 1440p in selected testing with Adrenalin 24.1.1, FSR 2 Quality mode and a Radeon RX 7600 XT. Those figures belong to AMD’s later release and test conditions; they should not be presented as benchmark results for 23.40.01.10 or generalized to every game, GPU or resolution. See AMD’s 24.1.1 release notes and AFMF documentation for that context.

Installation precautions

This was a preview driver, so installation should be treated as a controlled test rather than a routine update.

  1. Confirm the exact GPU and operating system. A processor family or Radeon branding alone does not guarantee AFMF availability.
  2. Prefer the laptop manufacturer’s driver when system features matter. OEM packages may better support hybrid graphics, display switching, hotkeys and power management.
  3. Clean up an earlier preview first. AMD specifically recommended AMD Cleanup Utility for users moving from another AMD preview driver.
  4. Keep a recovery path. Download or otherwise prepare access to a current recommended driver before changing the working installation.
  5. Install with administrator privileges. The package required 64-bit Windows and a supported Radeon product, and it excluded Apple Boot Camp configurations.

After installation, check the AMD Software overlay and Performance Metrics Overlay in a compatible DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 game. If AFMF is absent, check the display-driving GPU, fullscreen mode, VSync state, OEM restrictions and the per-game profile before assuming the GPU is unsupported.

Known issues and fixed issues

AMD’s known-issue list included:

  • Audio falling out of sync with video when recording with the AV1 codec.
  • The FRTC toggle disappearing after AFMF was enabled with Alt + Shift + G.
  • Driver crashes during simultaneous gameplay and video playback when hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling was enabled.
  • Parsec crashing on the host after reboot.
  • A prolonged black screen in Deathloop on some Radeon products, including the RX 6900 XT.
  • AFMF becoming incorrectly enabled in custom per-game profiles after a driver upgrade.

The same release fixed or improved several other problems, including crashes when changing resolution or switching tabs with AFMF enabled, stutter or crashes after closing Xbox Game Bar, erratic FPS reports on FreeSync displays, wavy or tearing-like artifacts, Adrenalin crashes that left AFMF inactive, some DirectML performance drops, intermittent grey screens after upgrades with certain monitors, unavailable graphics API metrics in some UWP applications and flickering ground textures in War Thunder with 4x SAAA on certain Radeon products.

These lists show why the package should not be treated as a mature universal solution. Individual games and configurations could still behave differently. A reported AMD Community case involving a Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U with Radeon 780M also illustrates that a driver could install successfully while AFMF remained unavailable on a particular laptop. That report is an example of configuration-specific behavior, not proof that every 780M system fails: AMD Community report.

How to roll back

If the preview causes crashes, missing features or broken display behavior, AMD’s suggested recovery route was the AMD Auto-Detect and Install Tool, which can return the system to a current recommended Adrenalin driver. AMD’s current driver page is available here.

If a normal downgrade leaves mixed components, corrupted profiles or persistent display problems, perform a clean driver removal and reinstall the recommended package. Laptop owners should consider returning to the manufacturer’s validated driver if power management, display switching or other OEM functions stop working.

What replaced 23.40.01.10?

Adrenalin 24.1.1 was the important transition point: it brought AFMF into a stable mainstream Adrenalin release. Its driver version was 23.40.02, with Windows Driver Store version 31.0.24002.92. Later AFMF 2 technical previews introduced further changes, including improvements aimed at latency and broader display-mode support. AFMF 2 should not be confused with the original implementation in 23.40.01.10; later features and compatibility should not be attributed retroactively to this driver.

For current installations, use AMD’s product-specific support page or Auto-Detect tool rather than searching for this archived preview. The original package is worth considering only when reproducing a historical test, investigating a title known to behave differently on that version or documenting AFMF’s development.

Should you install it today?

Generally, no. Install 23.40.01.10 only if you have a specific archival or compatibility reason, understand the preview risks and have a tested rollback plan. It is a poor choice for a work machine, streaming system, OEM-dependent laptop or competitive gaming PC where stability, latency and consistent frame pacing matter more than an experimental FPS increase.

For ordinary users who simply want AFMF, choose a current supported AMD driver. For hardware selection, prioritize a GPU that can maintain a strong native frame rate without frame generation, and for laptops prioritize OEM driver quality and display-path compatibility. Do not buy hardware solely because an obsolete preview listed its GPU family.
