Amazon did retreat from its own physical grocery-store strategy, but the viral explanation is misleading. In April 2024, Amazon removed Just Walk Out from larger U.S. Amazon Fresh stores and replaced it with Dash Carts. On January 27, 2026, it announced plans to close its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, converting some locations to Whole Foods Market stores. However, Just Walk Out was not simply a system of 1,000 people watching every shopper, and Amazon continues to offer the technology to third-party retailers.
What Amazon actually abandoned
Several different events have been compressed into one headline.

- 2018: Amazon launched the Amazon Go cashierless-store concept.
- April 2024: Amazon said it was removing Just Walk Out from its larger U.S. Amazon Fresh grocery stores.
- April 2024: Amazon continued promoting Just Walk Out as technology that other retailers could use.
- January 27, 2026: Amazon announced that it would close its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores, while expanding Whole Foods and emphasizing online and same-day grocery delivery.
The 2024 decision was therefore not an immediate shutdown of every cashierless store. It was a decision about using Just Walk Out in a particular format: large grocery stores where customers often buy dozens of items and want to monitor their spending.

How Just Walk Out was supposed to work
Just Walk Out was designed to remove the conventional checkout step. A shopper identifies a payment method at the entrance, takes products from shelves, and leaves. Amazon then generates a receipt for the shopping session.
According to Amazon’s technical explanation, the system combines technologies including:
- Computer vision
- Machine-learning models
- Object and product recognition
- Shelf and other sensors
- Sensor fusion, which combines signals from multiple systems
- Radio-frequency identification, or RFID, in some deployments
The system associates products with a temporary shopping-session identifier linked to the shopper’s payment method. Amazon says ordinary Just Walk Out tracking does not require biometric identification. That should not be confused with Amazon One, the company’s separate palm-recognition service.

In simple terms, the store has to determine which shopper picked up which item, notice when an item is returned, and produce a correct basket when that shopper exits. That becomes substantially harder when a store is crowded, several people shop together, products have similar packaging, or an item is hidden by a bag, coat, or another shopper.
Where the “1,000 humans” claim came from
The most important reporting behind the viral claim came from The Information. It reported that, as of mid-2022, more than 1,000 people in India worked on Just Walk Out-related tasks.
That figure did not establish that 1,000 workers continuously watched every shopper through remote video feeds or manually created every receipt. The reported work included two different categories:
Training and data annotation
Machine-learning systems need examples. Workers can label images, video frames, products, and shopper interactions so models learn what different actions and objects look like. This work helps train and evaluate computer-vision systems, but it is not the same as manually operating every checkout.

Transaction validation
People may also review or correct transactions when software is uncertain. That is a form of exception handling or quality assurance. It can be operationally important without meaning that every customer is being watched live.
Amazon disputed both the characterization and the exact staffing figure. In its response, the company said associates primarily annotated synthetic and real shopping data and validated some purchases, while computer-vision systems generated receipts automatically.
What about the claim that 700 out of 1,000 sales needed human review?
The Information reported that an unnamed source said roughly 700 of every 1,000 sales required human review in 2022, compared with an internal target of 20 to 50 reviews per 1,000 sales.
Those figures are significant if accurate, but they require careful handling:
- They were attributed to an unnamed source rather than presented as an independently audited performance report.
- They described an earlier stage of the system, not necessarily its performance in 2024 or 2026.
- “Review” may cover different activities, from checking an uncertain transaction to correcting a receipt.
- The numbers do not prove that humans watched every shopper continuously.
The defensible conclusion is that Just Walk Out involved human labor for training data and some transaction validation, and that reporting raised serious questions about the scale and economics of that labor. The evidence does not support the simpler claim that the entire system was fake AI operated manually by 1,000 people.
Why Dash Carts made more sense for large grocery trips
Just Walk Out promises a frictionless exit: take products and leave. That is attractive when someone buys a drink, snack, or prepared meal. It is less obviously attractive when a shopper is filling a full grocery basket and wants to know the total before payment.
A Dash Cart changes the trade-off. The shopper must scan items, but the cart can show a running total, deals, and savings. Customers can identify mistakes before leaving rather than waiting for a receipt to arrive after the transaction.

That explanation is not an admission that computer vision was impossible. It is a recognition that the best checkout system depends on the shopping format. A supermarket customer may value financial visibility more than the ability to skip scanning; a stadium customer may value speed above all else.
Why Amazon later left its own Go and Fresh stores
Amazon’s January 2026 announcement was broader than the 2024 change. The company said it would close its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores and focus more heavily on Whole Foods Market, smaller Whole Foods Daily Shop formats, and online or same-day grocery delivery. Some former Amazon locations were to be converted to Whole Foods stores.
Amazon said it had not found the distinctive customer experience and economic model needed to expand its Amazon-branded grocery stores at scale. That points to a broader retail-strategy problem, not a single technology failure.
Physical grocery stores have difficult economics. They require real estate, staffing, replenishment, maintenance, and a compelling assortment. A cashierless system can reduce some checkout friction, but it does not solve grocery margins, product sourcing, customer acquisition, delivery competition, or the cost of installing and maintaining cameras, sensors, electrical systems, and software integrations.
Investigative reporting also described installation challenges, including construction changes such as moving walls and electrical outlets, and concerns involving third-party partners. Those reports provide important context, but they do not amount to a public technical audit proving that Just Walk Out universally failed.
Why the technology can still work in smaller venues
A full-size supermarket and a hospital snack shop may use similar technology while presenting completely different engineering and business problems.

Smaller assortments reduce product-recognition edge cases. Shorter visits reduce the number of interactions a system must track. High-traffic venues can also justify installation costs because every avoided queue has visible value.

Amazon said in 2026 that Just Walk Out operated in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries and that the technology was used in more than 40 North American fulfillment-center breakrooms. Those are Amazon-reported figures, not independently audited market totals. The company also described newer RFID-based and portable-lane deployments for events in its 2026 technology update.

Just Walk Out
Strengths: fast exits, potentially high throughput, and minimal customer interaction at checkout.
Recommended Free Tools
Weaknesses: complex installation, privacy questions, difficult edge cases, possible receipt delays when validation is needed, and less visibility into the running basket total.
Dash Cart
Strengths: a visible running total, purchase review before payment, and better support for larger baskets and promotions.
Weaknesses: shoppers must scan items, compatible carts and infrastructure are required, and the experience is less seamless than simply leaving.
Conventional checkout
Strengths: familiarity, easier troubleshooting, and flexibility for unusual items, returns, and corrections.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
True: Amazon removed Just Walk Out from larger U.S. Amazon Fresh stores in 2024.
True but incomplete: The Information reported that more than 1,000 India-based workers were involved in related annotation and validation work as of mid-2022.
Misleading: The system was simply 1,000 humans watching every shopper and manually building every receipt.
Too broad: Amazon did not abandon Just Walk Out everywhere in 2024. It continued selling the technology to third-party retailers.
Current: Amazon has announced the closure of its own Go and Fresh physical-store formats while continuing to position Just Walk Out as a business-to-business technology for smaller and high-throughput venues.
The larger lesson is not that artificial intelligence either worked perfectly or was secretly fake. Automated retail systems often combine models, sensors, software, human data work, and human exception handling. The meaningful questions are how much human intervention is required, how that requirement changes over time, whether customers receive a reliable experience, and whether the economics work for the specific store format.
