Amazon’s December 2, 2024 Cyber Monday promotion briefly reduced the 2024 Roku Ultra (model 4850R) to about $79. The deal was generally listed at $79, although the accompanying coverage also described the price as $80. It was an expired historical offer—not a current Amazon deal.

The promotion represented roughly $20 off the model’s $99.99 U.S. launch price. Engadget characterized it as an all-time low for the newly launched model at the time, though that should be understood as a claim from the 2024 deal coverage rather than a permanent, independently verified price-history record. The reported deal was temporary and could have changed or sold out during Cyber Monday.
What the 2024 Roku Ultra offers
Roku launched this Ultra in September 2024 with a new quad-core processor that Roku says is more than 30% faster than other Roku players. That is Roku’s performance claim, not an independent benchmark, but the intended benefit is quicker app launches and more responsive navigation.

Who benefited most from the $79 price?
The deal was especially compelling for buyers who would use the Ultra’s premium features rather than simply needing any streaming device.
- Older smart-TV owners: A dedicated player can replace a slow or outdated built-in interface.
- Home-theater users: Compatible 4K HDR displays and Dolby Atmos equipment can take advantage of the supported formats.
- Projector owners: The Ultra provides a separate HDMI streaming source, provided the projector and audio setup meet the required standards.
- Ethernet users: Wired networking can help when Wi-Fi is unreliable.
- Local-media users: The USB port supports compatible files stored on external media.
- Remote-focused households: The rechargeable, backlit Voice Remote Pro adds convenience over a basic remote.
Important limitations
The 2024 Roku Ultra is not automatically the best choice for every television. A basic 1080p set, a newer smart TV with fast supported apps, or a secondary-room television may not benefit enough from the extra hardware to justify the premium.
The remote also dropped the traditional headphone jack found on some earlier Roku remotes. Bluetooth Headphone Mode remains available, but it is not the same as plugging wired headphones directly into the remote.

Its headline video and audio features depend on the rest of the setup. Full 4K and HDR performance requires compatible content, display hardware and HDMI connections; Roku lists HDCP 2.2 support as part of the 4K/HDR requirements. Dolby Vision requires a compatible TV and HDMI path, while Dolby Atmos requires compatible audio equipment and configuration. Wi-Fi 6 cannot overcome a slow router or broadband connection, and the 10/100 Ethernet port favors connection stability rather than high throughput.
What you need to use it
- A television or display with an HDMI input
- Internet access through Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Compatible HDMI equipment for 4K and HDR
- Compatible content and display/audio hardware for Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos
Buying the device does not include Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Max or other paid subscriptions. Roku provides access to streaming apps and free, ad-supported programming through The Roku Channel, but subscription services generally require separate accounts and payments.
Alternatives
Roku Ultra LT
Roku positions the Ultra LT as a lower-priced alternative sold exclusively through Walmart. It retains 4K, Dolby Vision and Ethernet, but gives up parts of the full Ultra package, including Wi-Fi 6, USB playback, Dolby Atmos support as described in Roku’s comparison material, and the Voice Remote Pro experience. Check Walmart for the current price rather than relying on 2024 deal figures.

Cheaper Roku players
A Roku Streaming Stick or another lower-cost Roku player is usually a better fit for a secondary TV, a 1080p display or anyone who does not need Ethernet, USB playback, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos or the premium remote. Exact model availability and pricing change over time.

Built-in smart-TV software
If your television already has a responsive interface and supported apps, an external Ultra may add little beyond Roku’s interface and remote experience. A separate player becomes more attractive when the built-in software is slow, no longer well supported, or lacks features your setup requires.

For 4K problems, check the TV’s HDMI input, HDCP 2.2 compatibility, cable and display settings. For missing Dolby Vision or Atmos, verify every component in the HDMI and audio chain—not just the Roku player.
If the Voice Remote Pro does not pair during setup, Roku’s support guidance says to unplug the player for 10 seconds, reconnect it and retry the pairing process. For a projector, also confirm HDMI compatibility, HDCP support and how audio will reach usable speakers or an external sound system.
Is the Roku Ultra still worth buying?
At the historical $79 price, the 2024 Roku Ultra was a strong buy for shoppers who wanted a premium Roku player with Ethernet, USB playback, Wi-Fi 6, advanced HDR and the Voice Remote Pro. It was less compelling for viewers with a good newer smart TV or a basic 1080p setup.
