Amazon discounted its newly released 2024 Kindle lineup during its U.S. Black Friday 2024 promotion. The basic 2024 Kindle fell to $84.99, while the 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite started at $129.99. The Paperwhite Signature Edition dropped to $154.99.
These are historical U.S. prices from November–December 2024, not current 2026 offers. Amazon’s Black Friday Week ran from November 21 through November 29, followed by Cyber Monday savings through December 2. Amazon’s announcement said selected Amazon devices were discounted by up to 55%.

Which Kindle was the best deal?
For most readers, the standard 2024 Kindle Paperwhite at $129.99 was the strongest all-around choice. For $45 more than the basic Kindle, it provided a larger 7-inch glare-free display, adjustable warm light, waterproofing, faster page turns, and 16GB of storage.

The Paperwhite Signature Edition was arguably the best premium value. At $154.99, it cost only $25 more than the standard Paperwhite while adding 32GB of storage, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting front light. TechRadar described both Paperwhite prices as new lows at the time; that should not be interpreted as a claim about every historical or future sale.
What “new 2024 Kindle” meant
The phrase was ambiguous. Amazon discounted both the basic Kindle released in 2024 and the 2024, 12th-generation Paperwhite, along with their Signature and Kids versions. They were not interchangeable products.
2024 basic Kindle — $84.99
The entry-level Kindle had a compact 6-inch display, adjustable front light, 16GB of storage, and Black or Matcha color options. It was the smallest and least expensive option, making it suitable for commuters, children, and readers who mainly want an inexpensive dedicated e-reader.
It did not offer the Paperwhite’s larger screen, warm lighting, or waterproof design. Choose it when price and portability matter more than those features.

2024 Kindle Paperwhite — $129.99
The 2024 Paperwhite used a 7-inch glare-free display with adjustable warm light, waterproofing, 16GB of storage, and improved performance over the previous generation. Contemporary reviews characterized it as an evolutionary improvement rather than a radical redesign. See TechRadar’s review and Ars Technica’s review for generation context.
This was the sensible middle ground for readers who wanted comfortable nighttime reading, a larger display, or protection from splashes without paying for the Signature Edition.
Paperwhite Signature Edition — $154.99
The Signature Edition retained the Paperwhite’s general 7-inch reading platform while adding 32GB of storage, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting front light. It was offered in premium colors including Black, Jade, and Raspberry.

Wireless charging and automatic brightness adjustment were convenience features rather than essential upgrades, but the unusually small $25 sale-price gap made the Signature Edition attractive.

Kindle Kids — $94.99
The standard Kids model was not simply a cheaper adult Kindle. The bundle included Amazon Kids+, child-focused features, and a two-year worry-free replacement guarantee according to contemporary deal coverage. Subscription terms and package contents can vary by market, so buyers should verify them on the product page.
Its 6-inch screen and compact design made it the lower-cost family option. Adults who did not need Kids+ or the replacement coverage generally had less reason to choose it over the standard Kindle.
Kindle Paperwhite Kids — $139.99
The Paperwhite Kids edition combined the Kids bundle and replacement coverage with the Paperwhite’s larger waterproof reading platform. It was a better fit for children who read heavily, read near water, or would benefit from the 7-inch display.
Kindle Scribe — $269.99
The 16GB Kindle Scribe was added later, on November 28, rather than appearing in the initial November 21 deal list. Its $269.99 price represented a $70 reduction from $339.99.

The Scribe made sense only for buyers who specifically wanted a much larger screen and handwriting or note-taking capabilities. It was less pocketable and was not the value choice for ordinary book reading.
What was not discounted at the initial launch?
The Kindle Colorsoft was reportedly not on sale in The eBook Reader’s November 21 deal list, and availability was several weeks out. The Scribe was also initially absent before its November 28 addition. This means the headline should not be read as “every new Kindle was discounted.”
Amazon’s “up to 55% off” language applied to selected Amazon devices overall, not to every Kindle model.

Check the exact Kindle generation before buying a case. A cover made for the 2021, 11th-generation Paperwhite is not automatically compatible with the 2024 Paperwhite.
Could a trade-in discount be added?
The eBook Reader reported that Amazon offered an additional 20% off when shoppers traded in an eligible older Kindle, along with at least a $5 credit for a broken device. Eligibility, trade-in values, and promotional terms can change, so this was a 2024 promotion rather than a standing guarantee. Buyers would have needed to confirm the offer at checkout.
There is also no evidence here of a universal Amazon price-adjustment policy for Kindles purchased shortly before the sale.

- Choose the basic Kindle if you want the lowest price, smallest size, and a 6-inch reading screen.
- Choose the standard Paperwhite if you want the best balance of price, screen size, warm light, and waterproofing.
- Choose the Signature Edition if $25 more was acceptable for 32GB storage, wireless charging, and automatic lighting.
- Choose Kindle Kids for the lower-cost child-focused bundle with Kids+ and replacement coverage.
- Choose Paperwhite Kids if a child needs the larger waterproof Paperwhite platform.
- Choose the Scribe only when handwriting, notes, or a large display are central requirements.
Bottom line on the Black Friday 2024 Kindle sale
The 2024 Black Friday promotion was notable because Amazon discounted recently released Kindles instead of limiting the event to older stock. The basic Kindle at $84.99 was the budget winner, the Paperwhite at $129.99 was the best general-purpose choice, and the Signature Edition at $154.99 offered an unusually compelling premium upgrade.
