Amazon Go made checkout disappear for shoppers, but it did not make grocery stores staffless. The Seattle prototype let customers enter with an app, pick up goods and leave while software assembled a virtual basket and charged their account. Amazon later pulled Just Walk Out from larger U.S. Fresh stores, then announced in January 2026 that it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores. The technology itself survives as a product for other retailers.
What Amazon Go promised
When the headline appeared in January 2017, Amazon Go was a small-format store concept built around a simple proposition: take what you need and walk out, without scanning items at a checkout. The first Seattle store was about 1,800 square feet (167 square metres)—closer to a convenience store than a full supermarket. Customers used the Amazon Go app to enter; after shopping, they left and received a digital receipt, with the purchase charged to their account. The original 2017 report described the prototype and its intended customer experience.
The idea became known as Just Walk Out. In broad terms, a shopper authenticates at entry, selects or returns products, and the system attempts to match those actions to a virtual basket. Cameras, shelf sensors, sensor fusion, computer vision and machine-learning software help identify what moved and who took it. The customer does not need to scan each item at a register. Amazon’s description of how Just Walk Out works and its account of later RFID-enabled deployments describe different implementations; the precise equipment can vary by store.

Store employees still have work to do, including restocking, food preparation, cleaning, customer assistance, security and maintenance.

Did AI take over cashier jobs?
It took over the conventional checkout interaction for customers using the system: no cashier scanned each item and accepted payment at a register. That is different from proving that AI eliminated a particular number of jobs, reduced total store labor by a measured amount or made every transaction human-free. The available public material does not establish a reliable job-loss count or a store-by-store accounting of labor savings.
It helps to separate four claims that are often collapsed into “cashierless”:

- Cashier replacement: the standard register-based checkout task is removed or reduced.
- Labor reduction: the store uses fewer paid hours overall. That requires staffing or payroll evidence; the absence of registers alone does not prove it.
- Labor substitution: work moves to stocking, customer support, food service, technical monitoring or exception handling.
- Labor displacement: workers lose employment rather than move to other duties. That, too, requires evidence about actual workers and jobs.
Reporting around Amazon’s 2024 strategy change raised questions about human review in difficult transactions. The careful conclusion is that a cashierless customer experience does not necessarily mean a transaction is processed without any human involvement. It would be too strong to claim that every shopper was manually watched or that a known number of reviewers handled every purchase. Amazon’s public descriptions explain the automated system, but do not provide a definitive account of human review across all stores and transactions. A compact shop with packaged snacks and drinks is a more controlled setting than a full grocery trip. A supermarket has thousands of products, large baskets and more ambiguous interactions: shoppers compare similar packages, put items back, share a cart, weigh produce or use coupons and discounts. Alcohol and other age-restricted goods require checks. A family shopping together, a customer without a compatible smartphone or account, or a person who wants a visible running total can also complicate the supposedly frictionless experience.

Errors matter because the customer may discover a mistaken item or charge only after leaving. A reliable system needs a clear way to review receipts, challenge a charge and resolve problems—not just a fast exit. Camera and transaction data also raise privacy questions, while app and account requirements can exclude shoppers who do not want or cannot use that setup.
These constraints help explain why the format matters. A stadium kiosk, airport shop, university store or workplace break room can benefit from rapid purchases in a limited product range. A full-size supermarket must support a much broader mix of shopping habits, merchandise and pricing rules. Success in a grab-and-go location would not, by itself, prove that the same approach is economical or convenient across a grocery chain.

Amazon changed direction
In April 2024, Amazon said it was removing Just Walk Out from its larger U.S. Amazon Fresh grocery stores and shifting toward Dash Carts. A Dash Cart lets shoppers scan items as they shop and pay through the cart. Amazon’s stated rationale emphasized customer experience, including features such as seeing a running total and finding savings during a trip; AP’s report covered the change.
The move indicates that Amazon saw a better fit for Just Walk Out in smaller or more controlled settings than in larger grocery stores. It does not, on its own, establish why the economics changed: Amazon has not published a definitive public accounting of per-store profitability, installation costs, labor savings or the role each factor played. Technical complexity, customer preferences, operating costs and the demands of a full grocery trip are plausible considerations, not confirmed explanations for the entire decision.

The next step was broader. On January 27, 2026, Amazon announced that it would close its physical Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores and convert various locations to Whole Foods Market stores. The company said it would focus on Whole Foods and online grocery, among other initiatives. This was a retreat from Amazon-owned Go and Fresh storefronts, not from grocery retail altogether. Amazon’s announcement also described testing Amazon Now, an ultra-fast delivery option for thousands of essentials, including fresh food, in about 30 minutes or less; availability and coverage are time-sensitive. Amazon’s announcement sets out the closure and broader strategy.
What survived: Just Walk Out as retail infrastructure
Amazon says Just Walk Out remains available to other operators and is used in hundreds of locations worldwide. The company cites settings such as convenience stores, stadiums, universities, airports and other grab-and-go venues; it also said in its 2026 announcement that more than 40 North American fulfillment centers were using the system in break rooms. These are company-reported figures, not an independent audit. Amazon’s update on Just Walk Out and Dash Cart and the official Just Walk Out site describe its current business-to-business positioning. Amazon has also described RFID-based deployments for items such as apparel and general merchandise.
That shift is the most telling outcome of the experiment. Amazon no longer plans to build its own Go and Fresh physical-store network, but it still markets checkout technology to businesses that may have a narrower use case. The format can be more compelling where lines are costly and purchases are quick than where shoppers expect a complete supermarket experience.

“AI takes over cashier jobs” captured the visible change: a shopper could leave without a cashier or checkout station. It did not describe the whole labor picture, prove how many jobs disappeared or establish that the system worked without human support. Amazon demonstrated that checkout can be automated under the right conditions. Its subsequent retreat from larger Fresh stores—and from its own Go and Fresh storefronts—shows that removing the checkout counter is not the same as solving the economics and complexity of grocery retail.
