Amazon announced plans to acquire Bee in July 2025, and subsequent statements from Bee’s CEO indicated that the deal was completed. Bee was a startup building an AI wearable designed to turn everyday conversations and personal context into summaries, reminders and searchable memories. Amazon has not disclosed the purchase price or explained what will happen to Bee’s products, customer data or privacy practices.
What Amazon acquired
Bee was a San Francisco-based AI-wearables startup founded in 2022. Its main product was a small wrist-worn device resembling a basic fitness tracker, alongside an Apple Watch app and companion software. Rather than acting only as a voice recorder, Bee’s central idea was to listen in the background and use AI to make conversations useful later: summarizing them, generating reminders and to-do items, and letting users ask questions about what had been captured.
Users could connect information such as calendars, contacts, email, location, reminders and photos to give the assistant more context. That could help it turn a conversation into a useful follow-up, but it also meant the service could handle a broad picture of a person’s activities and relationships. TechCrunch’s July 2025 report described the device at $49.99 plus a $19 monthly subscription. Those are historical reported prices, not confirmation that Bee remains on sale or that those terms still apply.

- July 22, 2025: Bee co-founder and CEO Maria de Lourdes Zollo announced that the company was joining Amazon.
- At the time: Amazon confirmed its plans to acquire Bee to TechCrunch, but said the transaction had not yet closed.
- Later: Bee’s website reportedly carried a “Bee is joining Amazon” notice, and subsequent coverage said Zollo described the acquisition as completed. Later reporting also said employees received offers to join Amazon.
That chronology matters: the first announcement was not itself proof that closing had occurred. Later statements indicated completion, but the public reporting cited here does not provide a detailed Amazon transaction announcement or disclosed deal terms. Bee had reportedly raised $7 million in the prior year; that figure is funding, not the acquisition price or a valuation. Gadgets 360’s coverage also described Bee’s product and the later status.

Why Amazon might want an ambient AI wearable
The strategic appeal is plausible, though Amazon has not announced a Bee-based product roadmap. Bee’s concept extends an assistant beyond a home speaker: a wearable can accompany someone through the day and provide context about plans, conversations and tasks. If Amazon wants assistants to be more proactive and personalized, Bee could offer experience with low-friction hardware, software and real-world use.
Bee had also described a broader “cloud phone” idea: a personal interface to accounts, notifications, messages and reminders. The acquisition could therefore give Amazon talent, product concepts and user research as well as wearable technology. These are reasonable interpretations of what the company might gain—not confirmation that Bee will become an Alexa wearable, that Bee data will be used to train Amazon models, or that an Amazon-branded device is coming.

What happens to Bee customers?
The acquisition news does not settle the practical questions for people who already used Bee or were considering it. The available reporting does not establish whether hardware sales continued, subscriptions retained the same terms, the Apple Watch app remained available, or customers received a way to export or delete their data after any transition. It also does not say whether Amazon will discontinue Bee, redesign it or incorporate parts of the service into Alexa.

Because the historical price included a monthly subscription, service continuity matters as much as the device itself. A cloud-dependent wearable can lose much of its value if the service changes or ends. Do not treat Bee’s 2025 pricing as a current offer or assume that hardware can still be purchased.

The privacy question is about more than audio
A device designed to listen in everyday settings can capture people who never chose to use it. That creates a different consent burden from an assistant activated only by a button or wake word. Bee reportedly said users could delete data, that audio recordings were not saved, stored or used to train its AI, and that information learned about a user was retained to make the assistant work. The company had discussed asking captured speakers for verbal consent, controls that could pause learning by topic or location, and on-device processing as a future direction.
Those statements describe Bee’s reported pre-acquisition positions; they do not establish Amazon’s current or future policy. Raw audio, transcripts, summaries and inferred facts are distinct kinds of data. A service might discard audio while retaining a transcript or a profile derived from it. The key question is therefore not simply whether a device “records,” but what is captured, what is retained, where processing happens and what can be deleted.

For customers, the important post-acquisition details would include whether Amazon adopts or replaces Bee’s policy; whether recordings are retained even temporarily or used to train models; whether transcripts and inferred facts have separate deletion controls; whether data can be exported; how non-users can object to or remove voice data; and whether processing takes place on-device, in the cloud or through a mix of both. No change to Bee’s privacy policy should be assumed without documentation.
Before using any always-listening product, check for a physical mute switch and a clear recording indicator, and understand whether controls can restrict listening by place or topic. Consider the setting: a wearable may be inappropriate in a clinic, classroom, legal meeting or confidential workplace. Even with controls, transcription can misattribute speakers or summarize a conversation incorrectly; an automatically generated reminder or task should be checked before it is acted on.

How Bee differed from other AI hardware
Bee’s defining feature was passive, ongoing capture for memory and follow-up. Rabbit R1 was a handheld device oriented around interacting with apps and services, while Bee’s pitch centered on what an assistant could remember from daily life. Humane’s AI Pin was another wearable AI experiment, but a different product proposition; TechCrunch contrasted its reported $499 price with Bee’s roughly $50 hardware. Meta’s smart glasses combine cameras and voice features with a larger hardware platform, rather than sharing Bee’s exact purpose.
These products are not interchangeable, and their different interaction models bring different trade-offs. A device that listens continuously may reduce the effort of taking notes, but it raises greater questions about bystanders, consent and persistent personal data than a tool that records only when deliberately activated.
