Amazon’s tablet expansion was announced on March 12, 2018, not in 2026. It brought Alexa calling, messaging, video communication and Drop In to Fire tablets, Android tablets and iPads, with different hands-free requirements on each platform. The underlying Alexa Communication service still exists, but support depends on the Alexa app, tablet model, operating system, permissions and country.
The 2018 announcement in brief
Alexa communication had initially been associated mainly with Echo speakers and displays. Amazon’s March 12, 2018 expansion extended the experience to Fire tablets, Android tablets and iPads. The rollout covered voice calls, compatible video calls, Alexa voice messages and Drop In. The contemporary report is archived at HotHardware; its “now enabled” wording describes that 2018 rollout, not a new product launch.

Those historical distinctions should not be treated as a current compatibility chart. Later Fire OS, Android, iPadOS and Alexa app versions can change behavior, and Amazon does not publish one complete model-by-model table covering every generation.
What Alexa Communication means today
Amazon now uses Alexa Communication as the umbrella term. Current guidance covers supported Alexa devices and the Alexa app on phones and tablets. The main functions are different from one another:

Alexa-to-Alexa calling
You can call another Alexa Communication user through a compatible Alexa device or the Alexa app. If the answering endpoint has a suitable screen and camera, the conversation may become a video call. Both parties need a supported Alexa endpoint or the app, and video additionally depends on camera, microphone, software and account support.
Alexa-to-phone calling
Amazon’s current guidance says Alexa can call most phone numbers in the United States, Canada and Mexico at no charge. That is a regional statement, not a promise of universal telephone access. Emergency numbers, including 911, are not supported. Internet access, account setup and regional availability still apply. Do not treat a tablet running Alexa as a cellular or emergency phone.
Alexa Messaging
Messaging is not ordinary carrier SMS or Apple iMessage. You can send a voice message to another Alexa Communication user, and you can type a message in the Alexa app. A voice message is delivered as an Alexa message/recording and is received through a compatible Alexa device or the app. Amazon explicitly distinguishes this service from SMS in its communication documentation.

Drop In
Drop In is an optional, near-instant intercom connection rather than a conventional ringing call. It can connect devices in the same household or approved outside contacts. Outside contacts must be granted Drop In permission, which is separate from ordinary calling permission and can be revoked.
Announcements
Announcements broadcast a spoken message to compatible Alexa devices, such as telling household members that dinner is ready. They are not private one-to-one calls.
Setting up a tablet
- Install or update the Alexa app from the appropriate app store. On a Fire tablet, update Fire OS and the Alexa components available to that device.
- Sign in with the intended Amazon account.
- Complete Alexa Communication setup and verify a phone number if Amazon requests it. Verification can involve SMS; carrier data or message charges may apply.
- Allow microphone, camera, contacts and notification access as appropriate. Contact permission is needed if you want to call people by name from your address book.
- Ask a contact to complete the same setup. A recipient generally needs the Alexa app or a compatible Alexa endpoint.
- Configure Drop In separately. In the Alexa app, look for Communications, Contacts or the Conversation icon, then the Drop In area. Labels vary by app version and region. Select a contact or device and review its Drop In permission.
On Android tablets and iPads, opening the Alexa app is still the safest way to start communication. Whether a Fire tablet can respond to a wake word while the app is closed depends on its model, software and settings; do not assume every device has Fire HD 10-style hands-free behavior.

Alexa, announce that dinner’s ready.These are examples from Amazon’s guidance, not a guarantee that every command works identically on every tablet or in every country.
How it compares with other communication tools
- SMS and phone service: Alexa Messaging is an Amazon service, not automatically a carrier text. Alexa calling also depends on internet access and does not support 911.
- FaceTime: Better integrated into Apple hardware, but not a native cross-platform solution for Fire and Android tablets.
- WhatsApp: Offers a familiar cross-platform messaging identity, provided both people use WhatsApp.
- Google Meet: Better suited to scheduled meetings and broader video-conferencing workflows.
- Alexa: Most useful when a household already uses Echo devices and wants voice-first calls, room-to-room intercom behavior or simple check-ins.
Troubleshooting
Alexa does not respond
- Open the Alexa app manually, especially on Android or iPad.
- Confirm the correct Amazon account is signed in and the tablet is online.
- Check microphone, camera and notification permissions.
- Update the Alexa app and tablet operating system.
- Try starting the call from Communications or Contacts rather than by voice.
- Test an Alexa contact before testing a regular telephone number.
Child or restricted profiles can also block features. A tablet may support the Alexa app without supporting the expected background wake behavior.
You can call an Echo but not a phone number
Alexa-to-Alexa communication and Alexa-to-phone calling are separate capabilities. Phone-number calling is region-limited and excludes emergency numbers. Check the country associated with the account and use an ordinary telephone for emergency access.

The recipient did not receive a message
Verify that both users completed Alexa Communication setup, the recipient has the Alexa app or a supported device, notifications are enabled, and you selected the correct contact. Confirm that you sent an Alexa message rather than expecting an SMS.
Drop In connected unexpectedly
Review Drop In permissions for every contact and shared household device. Same-household behavior can differ from outside-contact behavior. Revoke access for anyone who should no longer connect instantly.
An older Fire tablet behaves differently
“Fire HD 10” alone does not identify a generation. To identify the device, open Settings > Device Options and look for Device Model or About Fire Tablet. Amazon’s device-specification guide explains the generation differences.

Who should use it?
Alexa calling is a sensible choice for families already invested in Echo devices, relatives who prefer speaking to typing, room-to-room intercom use and intentional caregiving check-ins. A Fire tablet is the natural budget-oriented endpoint; an existing iPad or Android tablet can try the feature without buying dedicated Alexa hardware. Choose an iPad when Apple integration and general tablet quality matter most, or Android when hardware variety and Google services matter more. Amazon’s Fire tablet range, iPad and representative Android tablet options differ substantially, so verify the exact model and software before buying.
Amazon says it does not currently charge a fee for Alexa Communication, although data usage, carrier charges and verification messages may cost money. Alexa+ is a separate broader service and is not presented as a requirement for basic Alexa calling and messaging.
Bottom line
Amazon really did enable Alexa calling and messaging on Fire, Android and iPad tablets—but that happened on March 12, 2018. Today, the feature remains useful for Alexa-centered households, provided you distinguish calling, Alexa Messaging, Drop In and Announcements, and account for app, hardware, region and permission limits. It complements rather than replaces cellular service, SMS, FaceTime, WhatsApp or emergency calling.
