AI music voice tools can help you sing with your own voice, use a vendor-provided vocal, or create a voice model—but a tool’s commercial-use claim does not by itself establish that you have permission to imitate another person or use an existing song. For a safer workflow, use your own recorded voice or a voice whose performer has authorized the use, keep the original song and lyrics yours or properly cleared, and check the tool’s current terms before publishing or monetizing.
What Voice Rights And Copyright Cover
There are separate questions: permission to use a voice, permission to use the underlying composition or recording, and whether the resulting music can receive copyright protection. A service may grant commercial-use rights to a generated track under its plan, but that does not establish permission for every voice, lyric, composition, or recording used to make it.
In its January 2025 report, the U.S. Copyright Office said that material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and human-authored contributions to a mixed work may be protected. That distinction matters on a phone, too: writing original lyrics, recording your own vocal, and making creative edits are different contributions from asking a generator for a song. Keep your lyrics, recordings, project files, and a note of the edits you made if you may need to document your contribution.

Choose A Voice You Have Permission To Use
- Your own voice: Recording yourself is the clearest starting point for a personal voice model. Suno says you can record a few seconds of your voice and have it sing what you write. Humlo says you can record your voice once and use it to appear to sing a track in an AI music video.
- A vendor-provided voice: Eleven Music says you can generate songs with a consistent voice using a Vocal from your tracks or its curated Vocal Library. Kits AI says the voices used in its models are ethically licensed and sourced from artists.
- Another person’s recognizable voice: Get that person’s permission before cloning or imitating their voice. Spotify’s announced policy allows vocal impersonation only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. That is a platform policy, not a blanket permission for other uses. Some services advertise cloning or voice swapping broadly. That describes a capability, not consent from the person being imitated. Do not treat “clone any voice” or a similar feature description as proof that a particular voice is authorized.

A Practical Phone Workflow
- Pick the voice source. For a first project, use your own voice or a vendor-provided vocal. If you want to imitate someone else, secure their authorization first.
- Start with material you control. Write original lyrics and use your own recording or a track you have permission to use. AI Song Cover and Humlo describe workflows involving existing tracks, including YouTube links; that does not establish that every linked track is cleared for reuse.
- Describe the musical result without naming an unapproved singer. For example: “Use my recorded voice for a warm, close lead vocal; keep the lyrics I wrote; make the arrangement sparse and leave space between phrases.” This is a prompt example, not a guarantee that a particular tool supports every control in it.
- Review the generated vocal. Listen for a voice that sounds like a real person you did not authorize, and check that the lyrics and backing material are yours or cleared. Replace the voice or source material if you cannot establish permission.
- Check the plan and destination rules. Confirm the tool’s current terms for commercial use, the specific voice, and your intended release. If uploading a realistic synthetic performance to YouTube, its altered-or-synthetic content label is required when the content could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. What A Commercial License Does Not Settle
A commercial-use statement is a vendor’s description of its service terms. It does not, by itself, answer whether you had permission to use a recognizable person’s voice, an existing recording, or someone else’s composition. Terms also differ by product and plan, so check the current vendor terms for your exact workflow and release destination. Where a tool or the available information does not specify a detail, treat it as unconfirmed and check with the vendor.

Spotify has also announced AI Persona badges to label artist identities that may be AI-generated rather than a real person. Platform labeling and moderation rules can change, so review the destination’s current requirements when you publish. Spotify AI Persona announcement
