For safer AI music releases, keep the song original, use only voices and audio you have permission to use, confirm the generator’s plan grants the intended use, and follow the upload platform’s disclosure rules. A paid plan or a vendor’s “commercial” label does not, by itself, make AI-generated material copyrightable or settle every rights question.
What Copyright Can Protect In An AI-Assisted Song
For U.S. registrations, the Copyright Office says material generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, and prompts alone do not make the user its author. Human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. In practice, keep drafts and project files that show your own lyrics, melody, arrangement, performance, or editing. Treat those as a record of your contribution; they do not guarantee that a claim will qualify for protection.

Which Rights Checks Matter Before You Publish?
- Voice: Get consent before generating or using an identifiable person’s voice. Spotify says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. That is Spotify’s stated policy, not a universal license for other services. Spotify AI music policy announcement
- Covers, lyrics, samples, and reference audio: Use material you created or have permission to use. A generator’s commercial-use terms do not establish permission to use somebody else’s song, recording, lyrics, or voice. Check the generator’s terms for uploaded audio and outputs, and ask the relevant rights holder when permission is unclear.
- Commercial use: Check the exact plan that applies to the track and the intended use, including monetized videos, ads, client work, streaming releases, or distribution as music. Save the applicable terms and any license certificate offered.
- Platform disclosure and monetization: Spotify supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits and announced an AI Persona badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated. YouTube requires a label for realistic altered or synthetic content, such as content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. These are vendor-stated terms, not a finding that every output is free of third-party rights issues. Confirm the current terms for your plan and use before release.

A Rights-Conscious Phone Workflow
- Write an original brief. For example: “Create an upbeat instrumental for my budget-phone repair video, with warm bass, light percussion, and a short ending.” Avoid asking for a named artist’s voice, melody, or lyrics. This is a prompt example, not a guarantee that an output is original or cleared.
- Keep inputs clean. Use your own lyrics and recordings, or audio you have permission to upload. Do not assume a reference upload grants rights to reproduce or publish its contents.
- Check plan and intended use. Before generating or downloading a release version, check the service’s current terms for your account tier and the specific use. Product plan details and licensing can change; where the terms do not clearly cover your case, ask the vendor.
- Keep a release record. Save the prompt, drafts, edits, plan and terms, permissions, and any license certificate. If registering a mixed work in the U.S., follow the Copyright Office’s disclosure requirement for more than minimal AI-generated material.
- Review the destination’s rules. Check whether your release needs AI credits or a synthetic-content label, and avoid mass-produced or repetitive uploads if you seek YouTube monetization.
What These Checks Cannot Establish
A vendor’s license describes the rights it offers under its own terms; it does not prove that a generated voice, melody, or other element has no conflicting rights.
