A CEO has reportedly predicted that an AI will be able to attend meetings on a user’s behalf later in 2026. That is a forecast, not a confirmed promise that anyone can send an autonomous stand-in to any call. Some meeting tools already join calls, coach users, answer questions, or turn discussions into follow-up work—but those are distinct capabilities.
The key question is whether an AI merely records a meeting, listens and reports back, speaks for you, or makes decisions and commitments. Today’s products span parts of that spectrum; reliable, broadly available representation remains a much higher bar.
“Attend a meeting” can mean four different things
The phrase sounds simple, but it can describe very different levels of delegation:

- Record and transcribe: A tool joins or captures a call and produces a transcript, summary, or action list. It does not participate or decide anything.
- Listen and report back: An AI joins in a recognizable bot identity, tracks topics relevant to you, and sends a recap. It may still remain silent throughout the call.
- Answer and represent: The AI responds to questions using approved documents, prior instructions, or business data. This is the point at which many people would consider it a genuine stand-in—and where authority, accuracy, and disclosure matter most.
- Take follow-up actions: The agent drafts or creates tasks, updates systems, schedules meetings, or prepares deliverables. These actions may happen after the call and do not, by themselves, mean the AI represented you during it.
A product can do one of these things without doing the others. “AI can attend meetings” is therefore not enough detail to establish what a product actually does.

What current products show
Otter.ai is the clearest example of movement toward live participation. In a July 21, 2026 announcement, Otter described Live Assist as a real-time coaching feature that can work with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or through Otter’s desktop application. The announcement also describes “Meeting Agents” that can participate in meetings, answer questions, and complete tasks, and identifies availability on Otter Enterprise. That is closer to a meeting delegate than a conventional after-the-call notetaker, but it does not establish that every user can send an autonomous substitute to any meeting. Otter’s announcement does not state a public price.
Microsoft Scout focuses on work around meetings. Microsoft announced Scout on June 2, 2026, describing an always-on agent connected to tools including Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, email, calendars, and contacts. Its announced tasks include coordinating schedules, prioritizing meetings, preparing materials, blocking calendar time, and flagging stalled decisions. The announcement does not establish that Scout independently conducts a live meeting in the user’s voice or makes commitments for them. Microsoft’s Scout description is not confirmation of a live-speaking delegate.
ZoomMate is oriented toward turning discussion into work. Zoom announced it on June 1, 2026, as an AI work surface that connects conversational context with search, content creation, and workflow execution. Zoom says it can produce presentations, documents, spreadsheets, reports, and project plans, and work with services such as Salesforce, Jira, Slack, and ServiceNow. That is useful follow-through, not evidence that ZoomMate replaces a human attendee. Zoom’s announcement does not provide a general public price.

OpenAI Presence is an enterprise agent deployment, not a plug-and-play meeting bot. OpenAI describes agents that can answer questions, use company systems, take approved actions, and escalate to people. The product is available to eligible enterprise customers through a limited general-availability program and is not self-serve. Its announcement does not position Presence as a consumer feature for sending a personal AI to meetings. OpenAI’s Presence overview emphasizes controlled deployment.
These examples point to a broader shift: meeting AI is moving beyond transcripts toward context-aware assistance and actions. They do not prove that all of those functions are bundled together, widely available, or authorized to speak for a person.
What “later this year” should—and should not—signal
The headline claim is that a CEO reportedly expects this kind of capability later in 2026. Without a confirmed original interview or product announcement, the speaker, product, precise scope, and release stage cannot be stated confidently. Treat the timing as a prediction for the remainder of 2026, not a guaranteed launch date.

A release might also work only with particular meeting platforms, integrations, or administrator settings. Before relying on a promised feature, look for the product name, supported platforms, who can access it, and whether it can actually speak—not just join, transcribe, or prepare materials.

What a responsible meeting delegate would need to do
A credible agent needs more than a language model. It has to recognize speech despite accents, interruptions, overlapping speakers, and poor audio; identify who is speaking; retrieve current, approved context; respond with low latency; and use connected tools without treating every piece of meeting content as an instruction. It also needs clear permissions, an audit trail, a way to hand control to a human, and an unmistakable identity as an AI.
A safer workflow might look like this:
- You provide the agenda, relevant briefing, and an explicit boundary for what the agent may answer.
- The agent joins under a clearly labeled AI identity, with participants informed of its role and any recording or processing.
- It answers factual questions only from approved sources and identifies where its answer came from.
- It defers on uncertain, sensitive, or consequential questions: “I don’t have authority to answer that. I’ll flag it for [user] to review.”
- Afterward, it sends the transcript, proposed decisions, and action items for review. High-impact changes require your approval.
There is a meaningful difference between saying, “The project brief lists June 30 as the target,” and saying, “We agree to the revised delivery date.” The first retrieves information; the second can create a commitment. By default, an agent should not make promises about deadlines, prices, policy exceptions, legal positions, spending, or contracts without explicit authorization.
Why people may want a delegate—and why colleagues may resist one
For routine status calls, optional meetings across time zones, or repetitive questions answered by well-maintained documentation, a delegate could help someone stay informed without attending every call. Sales and support teams might use meeting intelligence to capture requirements and prepare follow-ups. A well-controlled agent could also draft tasks or update a CRM after a meeting, leaving a person to review rather than manually re-enter information.

But attendance is also a social signal. Colleagues may feel ignored if someone routinely sends a bot instead of showing up. An AI may capture the words while missing sarcasm, unstated disagreement, interpersonal tension, or a tentative suggestion that was never meant as a firm decision. It can also miss a quiet correction or fail to understand which relationship matters in the room. A transcript is not the same as judgment or presence.

Consent and privacy are equally central. A call may contain trade secrets, personal data, legal advice, health information, or other restricted material. Participants should know whether an AI is present and whether audio or video is recorded, where transcripts are stored, who can access them, and how long they are retained. An organization may allow a silent notetaker while prohibiting an agent from speaking.
Connected agents add security risk. A system with access to email, calendars, documents, chats, or customer records could be exposed to accidental or malicious instructions embedded in a spoken remark, chat message, slide, or shared document. Meeting content should not automatically become an authorized command. Access should be limited to what the agent needs, actions logged, and sensitive changes gated by explicit approval.

Low-risk, recurring operational meetings with clear agendas, reliable documentation, and reversible follow-up tasks are sensible early candidates. Start with a tool that listens or drafts, then evaluate whether its summaries are accurate and whether action items are assigned correctly before allowing it to act.
Do not assume autonomous attendance is appropriate for employee discipline or performance reviews, legal strategy, mergers and acquisitions, medical or financial matters, security incidents, negotiations, board or investor meetings, or any call where participants have not consented to recording or automated processing. These settings demand judgment, confidentiality, and accountability that a meeting agent may not provide.

A practical checklist for evaluating a meeting agent
- Participation: Does it only listen, or can it speak and answer questions? Can it join without you? Which platforms and meeting configurations are supported?
- Identity and notice: Is it visibly identified as an AI? Are participants notified? Can an administrator or host block it?
- Grounding: Can responses be limited to approved documents? Does it show source passages or citations? Can it say when it does not know?
- Authority: Are actions draft-only, approval-based, or autonomous? Can it be prevented from making commitments or disclosing restricted information?
- Recovery: Can you review what it heard and why it acted, correct errors, reverse actions, revoke access, and take over immediately?
- Privacy and compliance: Where are recordings and transcripts stored? What retention, deletion, legal-hold, and regional data controls are available? Is the product suitable for your data obligations?
- Reliability: How does it handle overlapping speakers and poor audio? Can participants correct it during a call? What happens when it is uncertain?
- Cost and access: Is it priced per user, meeting, minute, or enterprise agreement? Are live participation and integrations included, and does every attendee need a license?
Pricing announcements need careful interpretation. Microsoft’s March 2026 announcement listed Agent 365 at $15 per user and Microsoft 365 E7 at $99 per user, but those figures are not a confirmed standalone Scout price or proof that Scout is included in a particular plan. Microsoft’s plan announcement is a pricing signal, not a Scout quote. The cited announcements for Otter, ZoomMate, and OpenAI Presence do not provide a general public price for the relevant capabilities.
The real test is authority, not just whether the AI can speak
A meeting delegate becomes useful only when it can reliably distinguish information from decisions, know what it is permitted to say, and hand uncertain or consequential questions back to a person. It should leave an auditable record of what it heard, which sources informed an answer, and what it changed. If it gets something wrong, the user and other participants need a clear way to correct the record and reverse actions where possible.
AI agents are already taking on pieces of meeting work: joining, coaching, summarizing, answering within defined contexts, and turning discussion into deliverables. The bigger promise—that an AI can stand in for your judgment and accountability—is not established by those features. A forecast for later in 2026 may bring more capable delegates, but the useful distinction will be what each one is allowed to do, and how clearly everyone knows it is doing it.
