The message usually means RTSS or its installer cannot find an older, optional DirectX component—not that Windows is missing DirectX 12. Install pending Windows updates, run Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, restart, and retry RTSS. If the web installer fails, use Microsoft’s offline DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package and run DXSETUP.exe.
What the RTSS DirectX message actually means
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the core DirectX runtime used by modern graphics features, including Direct3D. However, they do not necessarily include every older, optional library that games and utilities may still request.
Those legacy side-by-side components can include D3DX, older XInput and XAudio libraries, XACT, the HLSL compiler, and Managed DirectX components. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance explains that installing a newer DirectX version does not automatically provide every older component.
So an RTSS installer warning that the “required DirectX Runtime was not acquired” is generally a dependency or installation problem. It is not a request to upgrade DirectX 12, and the legacy package will not replace or change the DirectX version reported by Windows.

RTSS supports applications using DirectX, OpenGL, and Vulkan. The warning concerns a runtime component used by the installer or an RTSS-related component; it does not mean every game monitored by RTSS uses the same graphics API.
Why it often happens after a clean Windows installation
A clean installation removes previously installed redistributables, game dependencies, and utility software. Windows may have its core DirectX files while lacking optional legacy libraries installed by older games or applications.
This is also why a 64-bit Windows installation can still need legacy 32-bit components. Many games and utilities remain 32-bit, and “DirectX 12” does not satisfy a request for a specific library such as D3DX or XInput 1.3.

Fastest fix: install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update again after the restart and install any remaining important updates.
- Download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Microsoft.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Allow setup to download and install the missing legacy components. If an optional offer appears, decline it unless you specifically want it.
- Restart Windows if requested, then retry the RTSS or MSI Afterburner installation.
The web installer requires internet access during setup. It installs optional, older side-by-side technologies; it does not upgrade the DirectX version built into Windows.
Do not use the DirectX version shown by dxdiag as the only test. dxdiag is useful for general DirectX and graphics-driver information, but it is not a complete inventory of every legacy side-by-side DLL. The practical test is whether RTSS now installs and runs normally.
If the web installer fails: use the June 2010 offline package
The offline package is the better choice when the web installer is blocked by a proxy, VPN, security software, unreliable internet connection, or another download problem. Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Microsoft.

- Create a temporary folder, for example
C:DXRedist. - Run the downloaded package and extract its contents into that folder. Leave sufficient free disk space for extraction.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand choose Run as administrator. - Complete the interactive setup and restart Windows.
- Retry the RTSS installation.
The June 2010 package is a legacy redistributable, not a new version of DirectX. Its value is that it contains the accumulated optional components needed by older games and utilities. Microsoft documents the corresponding silent command as:
DXSETUP.exe /silentThat command is mainly useful for scripts or managed deployments. Most users should run DXSETUP.exe interactively so they can see setup errors.

Reinstall RTSS or MSI Afterburner safely
If the first RTSS installation stopped partway through, remove the incomplete installation before trying again:

- Uninstall RivaTuner Statistics Server from Windows’ installed-apps settings.
- If MSI Afterburner was installed with it and the problem continues, uninstall MSI Afterburner as well.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the DirectX components using one of the Microsoft methods above.
- Download RTSS or MSI Afterburner again from an authorized source and reinstall it.
RTSS is frequently bundled with MSI Afterburner. MSI Afterburner provides GPU monitoring, tuning, and fan-control features, while RTSS provides the on-screen display, frame-time and frame-rate monitoring, frame limiting, and application-hooking functions. You do not necessarily need Afterburner to use RTSS, but its current package can be a convenient way to obtain a compatible RTSS build.
For RTSS distribution, use the Guru3D RTSS download page and its distribution guidance, or an appropriate MSI-authorized source for Afterburner. Avoid search-result mirrors, repacked installers, “DLL fixer” sites, and pages that bundle unrelated download managers.
The Guru3D download page listed RTSS 7.3.7 as its final public build on the page checked August 18, 2026. Release labels can change, so verify the current authorized page rather than relying on an old filename.

What not to do
- Do not download individual DirectX DLLs from random websites. They may be malicious, mismatched, or incomplete.
- Do not copy DLLs manually into
System32orSysWOW64as a first-line fix. Manual replacement can create versioning and security problems. - Do not delete DirectX files from Windows system folders.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall the graphics driver as the first response. A GPU-driver clean installation generally does not add the missing legacy DirectX SDK libraries.
- Do not assume that DirectX 12 proves the dependency is present. The installer may be checking for a particular side-by-side component.
If setup still says the runtime was not acquired
If Microsoft’s installer reports that everything is already installed but RTSS continues to show the warning, the message may be caused by something other than the core runtime. Check these possibilities in order:
- A restart is still pending after Windows Update or a previous installation.
- The web installer could not download or register a component because of a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus, or endpoint-security rule.
- The RTSS installer was interrupted or is damaged.
- The package came from an unofficial or repacked download site.
- The actual missing dependency is Visual C++ or another runtime rather than DirectX.
- Windows has a broader installer or system-file problem.
For an “internal system error” from the DirectX installer:
- Restart Windows.
- Disconnect VPN or proxy software temporarily, if permitted on your system.
- Check that Windows’ date and time are correct.
- Run Windows Update again.
- Try the June 2010 offline package instead of the web installer.
- Check whether security software quarantined or blocked the installer.
- Run the installer from a local folder, not a network share.
If other Windows installers are also failing, repair the underlying Windows installation before treating RTSS as the cause. Inspect the RTSS installer’s error details or logs when available rather than repeatedly reinstalling DirectX without new evidence.
If RTSS installs but the overlay does not appear
That is a separate problem from acquiring the DirectX runtime. After installation:
- Confirm that RTSS is running and that its tray icon or process appears.
- Add the game or application to RTSS’s profile list if necessary.
- Check the profile’s Application detection level.
- Test with a simple supported application.
- Temporarily disable competing overlay or on-screen-display tools.
- Check whether the game’s anti-cheat system restricts third-party overlays.
Using several hook-based OSD tools at once can cause conflicts. Guru3D also notes that some anti-cheat systems may restrict OSD use. An RTSS installation that succeeds but produces no overlay therefore does not prove that DirectX installation failed.
Bottom line
After a clean Windows installation, the RTSS warning usually points to missing legacy DirectX side-by-side components, not a missing or outdated DirectX 12 installation. Update Windows, run Microsoft’s web installer, and retry. If that fails, extract Microsoft’s June 2010 offline package and run DXSETUP.exe. Then reinstall RTSS or MSI Afterburner from an authorized source. If the warning remains, investigate the installer, network, security software, Windows servicing, and package provenance instead of downloading DLLs or deleting system files.
