SlimLM is real, but it is an Adobe Research project—not a generally available Adobe consumer app or an established Acrobat feature. Presented at ACL 2025, it explores whether small language models can summarize documents, answer questions about them, and offer suggestions directly on a smartphone. “Cloud-scale power in your pocket” is an appealing metaphor, not a claim that a phone-sized model matches a frontier cloud AI.
What is Adobe SlimLM?
SlimLM is a family of small language models designed for document assistance on mobile devices. Researchers affiliated with Adobe Research, Auburn University, and Georgia Tech described the work in an ACL 2025 System Demonstrations paper, and Adobe Research provides a project overview. The project includes an Android demonstration application.
Its documented tasks are deliberately focused: summarizing a document, answering questions about its content, and generating suggestions. SlimLM is not presented as a universal chatbot, image generator, autonomous agent, or replacement for Acrobat.

A cloud assistant typically sends a prompt—and sometimes document text—to a remote service for processing. Local inference can reduce network round trips, work without a connection after the necessary files and models are on the device, and limit the need to send document content to a server. Organizations may also reduce some recurring API use.

Those are potential benefits, not automatic guarantees. An app can still upload files for OCR, sync them to cloud storage, or include text in diagnostics. Privacy depends on the whole workflow, not just where the language model runs.
How SlimLM was built and evaluated
The paper describes pretraining on SlimPajama-627B and task-specific fine-tuning on Adobe’s DocAssist dataset. The paper’s detailed material says DocAssist is based on about 83,000 documents. That does not establish that SlimLM was trained on Adobe customers’ private files; the cited research describes the named training resources instead.

The team evaluated the system on a Samsung Galaxy S24. That demonstrates work on one high-end Android phone, not equivalent performance on every Android device or any iPhone. Results depend on memory, processor and accelerator support, model format, context length, heat, battery state, and other software in use.
There is also a discrepancy in public descriptions of the model sizes. Adobe’s project page and the original arXiv abstract say the range reaches 7 billion parameters; the ACL abstract says 8 billion; the paper’s detailed discussion focuses on models from 125 million to 1 billion parameters. The safest takeaway is that SlimLM explores compact models, with published upper-end figures that are not consistent across sources.

The paper reports performance comparable to or better than existing models of similar size on the authors’ selected benchmarks. That is a benchmark-specific result, not evidence that SlimLM matches larger cloud models across real-world work.
The practical constraint: documents are longer than a small context
The paper’s detailed material describes handling up to about 800 context tokens. That is a limited working window: many reports, contracts, and research papers contain far more text. A useful long-document product would need a surrounding pipeline to extract text, split it into chunks, retrieve relevant passages or summarize sections hierarchically, and preserve page references. Scanned pages may also need OCR.

These steps introduce their own failure modes. A parser can lose table structure; OCR can misread a number; chunking can separate a qualification from the sentence it changes; and a generated answer can still be wrong. For consequential decisions, verify answers against the source document.
What it may—and may not—be useful for
- Summaries: Condensing a manageable passage or document section.
- Document questions: Asking about information the model has actually received, subject to its context and the quality of text extraction.
- Suggestions: Generating document-related writing or editing ideas.
The research does not establish reliable handling of every PDF layout, scanned form, chart, spreadsheet, handwritten note, or multilingual document. Nor does it promise high accuracy for legal, financial, medical, or other high-stakes work.

Is SlimLM available to download or use?
The available primary sources describe a research model and Android demonstration, not a generally available, supported Adobe consumer product. They do not establish a Google Play release, an iOS version, minimum device requirements, current maintenance commitments, a subscription, or commercial pricing. The project’s reported repository may interest developers, but a public repository or checkpoint is not by itself a supported app or permission for every kind of redistribution; check the code, model, data, and app licenses separately.
There is no evidence in these sources that SlimLM powers Acrobat AI Assistant, is built into Creative Cloud, or is an Acrobat feature. Adobe’s commercial feature has its own product-specific generative-AI terms; that does not establish a SlimLM integration.
How it compares with other on-device options
SlimLM’s distinction is its focus on document assistance and its research demonstration. Developers looking for a broader current deployment ecosystem can compare it with Google AI Edge’s LiteRT-LM and AI Edge Gallery, which support multiple models and local execution pathways. Google’s model listings include Gemma, Phi, Qwen, and FunctionGemma options. Microsoft’s Phi Cookbook documents compact-model deployment approaches, including local and mobile runtimes.

A cloud document assistant may be more suitable when long context, multimodal understanding, centralized administration, or collaboration matters more than keeping inference local. The trade-off is network dependence and the possibility that document content or derived text is processed remotely.
