Adobe Project Stardust was real, but it was not released as a standalone Adobe app. Adobe presented it at MAX 2023 as an early-stage, object-aware editing engine that used image understanding and generative AI to select, move, remove, replace, and transform objects while reconstructing the surrounding scene.
There is no verified download, subscription tier, public API, or Photoshop product officially named Project Stardust. The closest current Adobe workflows are found across Photoshop and Firefly, including Generative Fill, Generative Remove, Generative Expand, object-aware reference-image compositing, and newer AI-assisted editing tools.
What was Adobe Project Stardust?
Adobe Project Stardust was an Adobe MAX 2023 Sneaks demonstration announced on October 11, 2023. Adobe described it as an object-aware editing engine powered by image understanding and generative AI.

The concept was designed to recognize meaningful objects and their relationships within an image. Instead of requiring a user to manually trace every edge, create several masks, move an object, and repair its original location separately, the demonstrated workflow aimed to make those operations more direct.

Adobe Research described Stardust as a system for automating background filling, object extraction, lighting and color blending, object addition, and creative transformations. These were capabilities shown or described for a prototype—not a promise of guaranteed production accuracy.
How Stardust was supposed to work
The key idea was object awareness. A conventional generative-fill workflow generally begins with a user-created selection or mask. Stardust’s proposed interaction began with the system understanding the objects in the image and allowing the user to target one directly.

Object recognition alone does not solve the entire editing problem. A convincing result also requires accurate segmentation, plausible reconstruction, correct geometry and perspective, consistent lighting, realistic shadows, and careful human review.

What Adobe demonstrated
Selecting complex objects
Adobe presented Stardust as capable of targeting complex elements, including people, without requiring the user to manually trace every boundary. The original Adobe announcement describes the engine’s object-aware selection and editing direction.
Moving a person or object
The concept allowed a user to select an object, move it elsewhere in the composition, and have the system help integrate the change. That included dealing with the space left behind rather than treating the moved object as an isolated cutout.
Reconstructing the original background
After an object was moved or removed, Stardust was intended to generate a plausible replacement for the area it had occupied. This is particularly useful when the original background is partly hidden by a person, vehicle, product, or other foreground element.

Removing unwanted objects
Object deletion was another central use case. The system would infer what should appear behind the unwanted element and reconstruct the scene using generative methods.
Blending lighting and color
Adobe Research said the system could help harmonize edits with the existing lighting and color of a scene. In a practical composite, this might mean adjusting how a moved or inserted object relates to the image’s illumination, color temperature, and surrounding tones.
Adding or transforming objects
The concept was not limited to removal. Adobe also described adding objects and making creative transformations. That points to a broader editing model in which an image is treated as a collection of semantically understood elements rather than a flat grid of pixels.
Is Project Stardust available to download?
No standalone public release under the name Project Stardust has been verified. Adobe presented it as part of MAX Sneaks, a collection of early-stage innovations. The announcement did not provide a download, product price, public beta, system requirements, subscription tier, or developer API for Stardust.
That does not prove Adobe never tested the technology privately or that none of its ideas later influenced commercial products. It does mean readers should be skeptical of pages claiming to offer an official “Project Stardust download.” Stardust was not documented as a separately installable application.

- It was an early-stage object-aware editing concept.
- Adobe later shipped related generative and object-focused capabilities.
- Adobe has not publicly confirmed that Stardust was renamed into one specific product or feature.
Did Project Stardust become Photoshop Generative Fill?
Adobe has not publicly established that Project Stardust became Photoshop Generative Fill. In fact, Photoshop Generative Fill was announced in May 2023—months before the October 2023 Stardust preview—as a Firefly-powered feature for adding, removing, and expanding image content.

The safest interpretation is that both belong to Adobe’s broader progression toward image understanding and generative editing. Stardust emphasized direct, object-centered interaction, while Generative Fill was already a shipping Photoshop feature. Some of Stardust’s ideas may have influenced later workflows, but that is an inference rather than a confirmed product-history statement from Adobe.
What can you use today instead?
Photoshop Generative Fill
Generative Fill can add, replace, or refine selected areas of an image. It is the closest general-purpose Photoshop workflow for context-aware image generation, although it is not officially called Project Stardust.
Generative Remove
Adobe’s current Firefly and Photoshop editing tools include Generative Remove for eliminating unwanted objects and reconstructing the surrounding image.

Generative Expand extends an image beyond its original borders, making it useful when changing aspect ratios or creating additional room around a subject.
Background removal and object isolation
Firefly includes one-click background-removal tools that address part of the isolation workflow envisioned by Stardust. For precise professional work, Photoshop’s selections, masks, and manual cleanup remain important.
Reference Image with objects
Adobe’s newer Photoshop Reference Image with objects workflow is one of the closest current examples of object-aware compositing. Adobe says it can preserve the identity of a reference object while accounting for factors such as scale, rotation, lighting, color, and perspective.

This should be described as a related current capability—not as Project Stardust under a new name.
AI Assistant and prompt-based editing
In March 2026, Adobe announced public-beta AI Assistant capabilities in Photoshop web and mobile. Adobe says users can describe edits such as removing distractions, changing backgrounds, adjusting lighting, and changing colors. Availability can vary by application, platform, account, and beta status.
Adobe also announced a broader creative agent across Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign, and Frame.io in June 2026. That announcement does not identify the agent as Stardust.
A practical current Photoshop workflow
The following is a modern Adobe workflow inspired by the jobs Stardust was intended to simplify. It is not a Project Stardust procedure.
To remove an object
- Open the image in a current Photoshop release.
- Use the Remove Tool or create a selection around the unwanted object.
- Apply the relevant generative removal or Generative Fill command. Depending on the interface, an empty prompt may be supported for contextual removal.
- Review the generated result at 100% magnification or higher.
- Check edges, shadows, reflections, repeating textures, text, and intersections with nearby objects.
- Keep the result on a separate or generated layer where available, then mask, regenerate, or retouch problem areas.
Exact labels and controls can vary between Photoshop desktop, web, mobile, beta releases, and available models.

To move an object
- Isolate the object with Object Selection, Select Subject, or a manual mask.
- Duplicate or copy the object to a new layer.
- Move and transform it into the new position.
- Repair its former location with Generative Fill or another reconstruction tool.
- Adjust scale, perspective, color, lighting, and shadow.
- Use masks and conventional retouching to clean the final composite.
To add an object or change its context
- Create a suitable selection or target region.
- Use Generative Fill, Reference Image, or an applicable Firefly editing control.
- Describe the desired object, material, orientation, and setting concisely.
- Generate several variations.
- Check perspective, depth of field, light direction, color temperature, scale, and contact shadows.
- Manually refine the result where generation is inconsistent.
Limitations and professional cautions
Neither a prototype demonstration nor a current AI editing feature guarantees a perfect mask or physically accurate scene reconstruction. Problems can occur with:

- Hands, faces, hair, and thin structures
- Transparent, translucent, or reflective materials
- Repeating patterns and architectural lines
- Text, logos, and branded products
- Complex shadows and reflections
- Occluded or overlapping objects
- Crowded scenes and ambiguous object boundaries
- Exact product geometry or legally significant details
AI generation may invent hidden details rather than recover the original pixels. It can also produce different results across Photoshop desktop, web, mobile, Firefly, models, and release versions.
For professional work:
- Keep the original image untouched.
- Work on duplicate, masked, or generated layers.
- Save versioned files and retain source assets.
- Inspect edits at full resolution.
- Compare multiple variations before choosing one.
- Correct masks, perspective, edges, and shadows manually.
- Retain model and generation information where relevant.
- Use Content Credentials or other provenance features when appropriate.
Subscription, credits, and commercial-use considerations
Photoshop is available through a Creative Cloud subscription rather than a perpetual license. AI features may also be subject to plan-specific generative credits, usage limits, model availability, or beta restrictions.
As a dated US pricing snapshot from August 18, 2026, Adobe’s Creative Cloud plans page listed Creative Cloud Pro at US$99.99 per month per license on an annual plan billed monthly, and Creative Cloud Pro Plus at US$110.49 per month per license. Prices, promotions, billing options, regional availability, and account eligibility can change.
Adobe positions Firefly as designed for commercially safer use, but that is not an absolute guarantee against every legal issue. Users remain responsible for uploaded assets, prompts, trademarks, likenesses, publicity rights, and any partner model used in a workflow.
Adobe’s model lineup also changes. For example, Adobe announced the retirement of Firefly Image 3 in Photoshop and directed users toward Firefly Fill & Expand for relevant workflows. Older articles may therefore describe model names, credits, or controls that are no longer current.
Alternatives to the current Adobe workflow
These are alternatives to Photoshop or Firefly—not replacements for a publicly released Stardust application.
- Affinity Photo 2: A conventional professional editor for users seeking a non-subscription licensing model. It does not provide Adobe’s integrated Firefly ecosystem.
- Canva: Useful for quick social, marketing, template, and collaborative design work, but generally less suited to highly controlled compositing.
- Luminar Neo: Focused on streamlined AI-assisted photography and enhancement rather than Photoshop’s extensive compositing ecosystem.
- Capture One: Strong for RAW processing, tethering, organization, and color workflows, but not a direct substitute for Photoshop-style generative compositing.
The bottom line on Project Stardust
Project Stardust was a real Adobe MAX 2023 prototype that proposed a more direct way to edit image objects with image understanding and generative AI. Adobe showed ideas such as selecting complex objects, moving them, removing them, rebuilding their former locations, blending lighting and color, and adding new elements.
