On an iPhone, activate iMessage from Settings > Apps > Messages (older iOS versions may show Settings > Messages). Phone-number activation requires an internet connection and SMS capability; Apple says carrier verification can take up to 24 hours and the activation SMS may incur a carrier charge. iPad and Mac normally use the same Apple Account, then let you choose which phone number or email address sends messages.
What iMessage activation does
iMessage sends texts, photos, videos and other Messages features over Wi‑Fi or cellular data. Blue bubbles usually indicate iMessage; green bubbles indicate SMS, MMS or RCS. Green does not necessarily mean delivery failed—it means the conversation used a non-iMessage route.

Activation associates your device, Apple Account, phone number and/or email address with Apple’s iMessage service. It is separate from activating a cellular plan, creating an Apple Account, syncing Messages with iCloud, or forwarding SMS to another Apple device. See Apple’s explanation of message types at Apple Support.
Recommended Free Tools
Before you start
- Connect the iPhone, iPad or Mac to working Wi‑Fi or cellular data.
- For an iPhone number, make sure the active SIM or eSIM has the intended number and can send and receive SMS.
- Install the latest available iOS, iPadOS or macOS update.
- Check Settings > General > Date & Time and use the correct date, time and time zone.
- Have your Apple Account password ready and use the same account on devices you want to connect.
- Remember that your carrier may charge for the SMS Apple uses to verify a phone number.
Apple’s phone-number requirements are listed at If you can’t turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime on your iPhone.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Activate iMessage on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Messages. On older iOS versions, tap Messages directly in Settings.
- Turn on iMessage. If iOS warns that an SMS charge may apply, tap Turn On.
- Tap Send & Receive.
- Under You can receive iMessages to and Reply From, select the intended phone number and Apple Account email address.
- Under Start New Conversations From, select your phone number if you want new chats to identify you by number rather than email.
A checkmark beside the number confirms verification. A spinning gear means verification is still running; leave iMessage enabled rather than repeatedly switching it off and on. Apple says the process may take up to 24 hours.
Activate iMessage on an iPad
- Open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on iMessage.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account used for Messages on your iPhone.
- Open Send & Receive and select the email address and any available phone number you want to use.
An iPad does not need its own cellular number to use iMessage with an Apple Account email address. To use your iPhone number, first configure that number on the iPhone and associate it with the same Apple Account. Details are in Apple’s phone-number guide.
Activate iMessage on a Mac
- Open the Messages app.
- Choose Messages > Settings, then select the iMessage tab.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account used on your iPhone or iPad.
- Select the phone numbers and email addresses from which the Mac should receive messages.
- If shown, choose the preferred identity under Start new conversations from.
iMessage sign-in alone does not relay ordinary green-bubble SMS or MMS to the Mac. For that, enable Text Message Forwarding on the iPhone.

Sync Messages with iCloud (optional)
iMessage activation and Messages in iCloud are separate. Activation lets a device send and receive iMessages; iCloud synchronizes message history and changes across devices.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap See All or Show All, then Messages in iCloud.
- Turn on Use on this iPhone (or the equivalent iPad option). On older systems, choose Messages and turn on Sync this iPhone or Sync this iPad.
Mac
- Open Messages > Settings.
- Click iMessage.
- Select Enable Messages in iCloud.
Use the same Apple Account on every device. Apple also requires two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain; initial synchronization can take time while Messages remains usable. See Apple’s iCloud Messages instructions.
Forward SMS and MMS to an iPad or Mac
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages.
- Tap Text Message Forwarding.
- Turn on each listed Apple device.
This forwarding setting is independent of both iMessage activation and Messages in iCloud.

Confirm activation
- The iMessage switch stays on.
- Your phone number has a checkmark in Send & Receive.
- The intended identity is selected under Start New Conversations From.
- A test to another reachable Apple device appears in a blue bubble.
- A test sent from the iPad or Mac arrives on the iPhone.
- The recipient sees the phone number or email address you intended.
A message to an Apple user can still be green if that person has iMessage disabled, lacks an internet connection, or Apple’s service is unavailable.
Troubleshoot common activation problems
“Waiting for Activation”
- Test Wi‑Fi or cellular data.
- Send and receive a normal SMS from the iPhone.
- Update iOS.
- Verify Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Confirm the active SIM or eSIM contains the intended number.
- Leave iMessage on and wait up to 24 hours.
- Ask your carrier whether international SMS is enabled and activation messages are blocked.
- Contact Apple Support if the carrier confirms service is working.
“Activation unsuccessful” or a server error
Check the network, install updates, verify date and time, and review Apple’s System Status. Only after those checks should you sign out of Messages and sign back in. Apple’s iPad and Mac troubleshooting guidance is at this support page.
The number is missing, duplicated or has no checkmark
Check the active SIM/eSIM, SMS service, Apple Account and Send & Receive selections. On iOS 26, an inactive SIM carrying the same number can block activation. Update to iOS 26.1 or later, or remove/delete the inactive SIM, as described by Apple.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Green bubbles after a new iPhone or eSIM
iMessage may be off, still verifying, unavailable for the recipient, or using a number that is not selected. If an eSIM was activated later in Settings, Apple recommends turning iMessage off and back on once. An inactive duplicate SIM can also interfere with iOS 26 activation.
Messages start from an email address
Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive, select the phone number under receiving options, and choose it under Start New Conversations From. Select matching identities on iPad and Mac. Using both a number and email can create separate threads with the same contact.
iPhone works but iPad or Mac does not
- Confirm the same Apple Account is signed in everywhere.
- Turn on iMessage on each device.
- Check Send & Receive selections.
- Enable Messages in iCloud if synchronized history is expected.
- Enable Text Message Forwarding if green-bubble SMS/MMS is expected.
- Install updates, test the internet connection and check Apple service status.
Phone number or Apple Account email?
| Identity | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | Keeping your familiar mobile identity and continuing iPhone conversations | Requires SMS verification, carrier support and potentially up to 24 hours |
| Apple Account email | Using iMessage on an iPad or Mac without exposing a number, or while number activation is pending | Recipients may see a different identity; mixing identities can split threads |
When to contact the carrier or Apple
Contact the carrier for failed SMS, blocked international SMS, incomplete number porting, eSIM provisioning, duplicate lines or account-level messaging restrictions. Contact Apple when carrier service is confirmed but activation, Apple Account sign-in, service errors or device configuration problems continue.

Frequently asked questions
Does iMessage require cellular service?
iMessage needs an internet connection. Phone-number activation on an iPhone additionally requires an active SMS-capable line; an iPad or Mac can use an Apple Account email address without its own cellular service.
Can I use iMessage with an email address?
Yes. Select the Apple Account email address in Send & Receive. Choose one primary starting identity to avoid separate conversation threads.
Do I need Messages in iCloud?
No. It synchronizes history across devices but is not required for basic iMessage activation or sending.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
