Some ACEMAGIC mini PCs shipped with suspicious or malware-detected software in their factory Windows images, according to reports from early 2024. ACEMAGIC said the incident involved certain systems made before November 18, 2023. That is evidence of a serious factory-image security failure—not proof that every ACEMAGIC computer, or every current model, is infected.
What happened with ACEMAGIC mini PCs?
In early 2024, independent reviewers reported Windows Defender alerts on ACEMAGIC systems, including an AD08. The alerts appeared shortly after boot and involved files associated with the system or recovery image. Reports said the detections included files associated with Bladabindi and Redline; The Register described Bladabindi as a backdoor capable of stealing information and installing additional malicious programs. The Register’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage document the reported detections.

ACEMAGIC acknowledged an issue involving a specific batch of systems manufactured before November 18, 2023. Its statement identified Bladabindi and Redline detections in an ENDEV folder and said the company had modified Windows-related components and network settings to reduce boot time without applying appropriate digital signatures. Was it spyware, malware, or a false positive?
Malware is the broad category for software designed to cause harm or gain unauthorized access. Spyware is malware that monitors activity or collects information. Redline is associated with credential and information theft; Bladabindi is described in reporting as a backdoor or remote-access threat. Those names are significant, but a detection label alone does not prove what every flagged file did on every affected PC.

Independent detections, including reports of multiple antivirus engines flagging files, make this more than a story about an unusual program name. But the public record does not conclusively establish whether the files were active malware, modified components that triggered false positives, or a mixture of both. ACEMAGIC’s missing-signature explanation is the company’s account, not an independently verified finding. Nor does the available evidence establish that ACEMAGIC deliberately installed spyware or that company executives knew about it.
Which systems may have been affected?
ACEMAGIC said certain systems manufactured before November 18, 2023 were involved. Reports named models including the AD08 and S1, but public documentation does not provide a complete list of affected serial numbers or a definitive model-by-model inventory. The date is a useful warning, not a guarantee: it does not establish that every earlier unit was infected or that every later unit is safe. A model name or current retail listing alone cannot verify a particular unit’s production history.
Owners of older or second-hand machines should judge the actual Windows installation and its provenance rather than relying only on the model name. A barebones unit with an operating system installed by its owner is less exposed to the specific preloaded-Windows-image issue, although that does not independently verify its firmware or hardware.

What to do before using an affected-era PC
- Keep it offline while deciding. Do not enter passwords, banking details, cryptocurrency credentials, work logins, or recovery codes on an untrusted installation.
- Preserve evidence before erasing anything. Photograph the model and serial number, Windows edition, suspicious programs, and any security alert. Contact the seller and ACEMAGIC before wiping the machine if a return, refund, or warranty claim may depend on documentation. Historical remedies included clean-system downloads and return or compensation options, but their reported terms were not uniform and should not be assumed available now.
- Back up personal files only. Copy documents and photos you need. Do not carry over executable files, unknown installers, old system images, or browser profiles that may contain cookies, tokens, or saved credentials.
- Create official Windows installation media using another trusted computer. Download it from Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page and prepare a USB installer. Confirm that you have a backup and are ready to erase the target drive.
- Boot the mini PC from the USB installer. In Windows Setup, choose a custom installation and delete the existing Windows and recovery partitions if you intend to wipe the entire drive. Select the resulting unallocated space and install Windows. This removes the old operating-system and recovery image from that drive.
- Update and restore cautiously. Run Windows Update, then obtain any necessary model-specific drivers from ACEMAGIC’s official downloads page or the relevant hardware vendor. Scan backed-up files before restoring them, and avoid reinstalling unknown software.
A clean installation from Microsoft media is different from Windows’ “Reset this PC” option: a reset may reuse recovery material on the computer. A full scan is useful triage, but it may not inspect every dormant file or recovery partition and cannot prove that an image was clean before files were quarantined or removed.
How to scan the original Windows installation
If you want to inspect the current installation before deciding what to do, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, then run a Full scan. If concern remains, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Microsoft’s Defender Offline guidance explains the offline scan. Labels and availability can vary by Windows edition, language, update level, and organizational policy.

If you already used the computer for sensitive accounts
Use a separate, trusted device—not the ACEMAGIC PC—to change passwords for accounts used on it if malware was confirmed or the installation otherwise cannot be trusted. Revoke active sessions where the service allows it, enable multifactor authentication, and review account activity. Treat browser-stored passwords, cookies, session tokens, and saved payment details as potentially exposed if a confirmed information stealer was present.
Do you need to replace the SSD?
Not automatically. If you can erase the old drive completely and install Windows from trusted media, replacing the SSD is not required just to remove the old Windows image. A new drive may be reasonable if the recovery partition cannot be removed, malware returns after a clean installation, the old drive contains sensitive data, or you need greater confidence for professional deployment. A replacement SSD does not establish that firmware or hardware is trustworthy.
The public reporting describes a Windows-image or software incident; it does not establish a BIOS, UEFI, motherboard, or hardware-level rootkit. Claims that the incident definitely infected firmware go beyond the available evidence. Reinstalling Windows or replacing storage likewise does not independently certify firmware.
Is it reasonable to buy an ACEMAGIC mini PC now?
ACEMAGIC continues to list newer mini PCs and model-specific Windows, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, BIOS, and other downloads. Its US mini PC collection shows current offerings, but a product listing or driver page demonstrates sales and support—not an independent security certification. A later Reddit comment attributed to an ACEMAGIC representative said units shipped since late 2024 were clean; that is an informal company-linked assurance, not an independent audit.
For a technically capable buyer, a current model may be reasonable if the price and hardware justify the extra setup and the seller offers a workable return policy. A risk-averse buyer who wants a ready-to-use PC with no reinstall or image inspection may reasonably choose a better-documented alternative. No PC vendor should be treated as automatically risk-free.
- Check that the exact model has current official driver and BIOS support.
- Prefer a barebones configuration when available if you intend to install your own operating system.
- Buy from a seller with clear return terms, and keep purchase records.
- Plan to clean-install Windows before using the machine for sensitive work if you want to avoid relying on the vendor’s preloaded image.
- If you cannot tolerate supply-chain uncertainty, choose a vendor with stronger security documentation rather than assuming the 2024 issue is conclusively resolved for every current product.
ACEMAGIC’s 2024 remedies included a clean-system download, customer support, return/refund routes, and proposed improvements to code-signing and security review. Reported compensation details differed, and those historical offers should not be treated as currently available without written confirmation.
