“Account Doesn’t Allow Editing” usually means Office is running in reduced functionality mode because it cannot validate a qualifying desktop license. The cause may be the wrong Microsoft account, an expired subscription, a Mac App Store installation that does not match a perpetual license, an administrator restriction, damaged credentials, or unsupported macOS/Office software. Office may still open and print files while blocking creation, editing, and saving.
On or after July 13, 2026, an older unsupported macOS or Office build can produce the same read-only behavior even when the account is valid. Check the account and update path before buying Office again.
Quick checks before changing anything
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and note the exact banner: “Activate Office to Create and Edit,” “Unlicensed Product,” “Subscription Expired,” “Account Notice,” “Action Required,” “The system requires that you sign on to a valid account,” or “Account Doesn’t Allow Editing.”
- Try File → New Blank Document. If a new file is also read-only, the problem is probably activation, licensing, or compatibility rather than one damaged document.
- Check Microsoft account → Services & subscriptions with every likely personal, school, work, or Family-plan account.
- Update macOS at System Settings → General → Software Update, then update Office through Help → Check for Updates or Microsoft AutoUpdate. Labels vary by macOS release and installation source.
What the message actually means
Microsoft describes this state as reduced functionality mode. When Office is not activated, the user is signed out, the account lacks a qualifying license, or a subscription has expired or been suspended, desktop apps generally allow opening and printing but not editing or creating files. See Microsoft’s subscription-notice guidance.
The wording does not necessarily mean Microsoft has blocked the account. It is a generic symptom of an entitlement or software-validation failure.

Use the symptom to choose the right fix
| What you see | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Every document is read-only | Unlicensed, expired, or unsupported Office | Check the license, then update macOS and Office |
| “Activate Office to Create and Edit” | Missing or stale activation token | Sign in with the licensed account |

| Work or school account | No desktop-app license assigned or an administrator policy | Contact the Microsoft 365 administrator |
| Error 0xD000000C | Network account cannot write to the keychain | Try activation from a local Mac account |
| Editing stopped after July 13, 2026 | Unsupported macOS or Office version | Update both systems |
| Only one file is affected | File lock, permissions, cloud status, or Protected View | Inspect that file and its save location |
| “Installation limit reached” | Too many activated devices | Remove an old device from account management |
Step-by-step fixes
1. Sign out of the wrong account and sign in again
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Open the account or profile menu and choose Sign out.
- Quit every Office application.
- Reopen one app and select Sign in or Activate.
- Use the account that owns the purchase or was assigned the work/school license, then quit and reopen Office.
This matters when personal and work accounts use similar addresses, when a Family invitation was sent to a different Microsoft account, or when ownership changed from a one-time purchase to Microsoft 365. Microsoft says signing out removes the license from the app and leaves viewing and printing available, but not editing. See Microsoft’s sign-in guidance.
2. Confirm that the account has desktop Office rights
At Services & subscriptions, look for Microsoft 365 Personal, Microsoft 365 Family, Office 2024, Office 2021, or another compatible purchase. A free Microsoft account may edit files in Office for the web without licensing the Mac desktop apps. Online access alone is not proof of desktop entitlement.
For a work or school account, only the organization’s administrator can assign the desktop-app license or change conditional-access and device policies. Buying a personal subscription may not activate a managed installation and may conflict with company or school policy.
3. Check whether the apps came from the Mac App Store
Open Finder, select an Office app, and check how it was installed. Microsoft’s Mac App Store activation rules state that those Word, Excel, and PowerPoint versions require a Microsoft 365 subscription for editing. One-time Office 2019, Office 2016, and volume licenses do not activate those apps.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you own a perpetual license, remove the incompatible Mac App Store versions and install the matching Microsoft-distributed build from your Microsoft account or Microsoft’s Office installer. Do not purchase another license until this mismatch is ruled out.

- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
4. Update macOS and Office
Microsoft documents a separate reduced-functionality issue beginning July 13, 2026 on some older unsupported operating systems or devices. Affected apps may open and print but stop editing, saving, or creating files. Install available macOS updates, then update Office using Help → Check for Updates or Microsoft AutoUpdate. The exact menu wording depends on the macOS release and Office distribution. See Microsoft’s update notice.
5. Resolve expiry, payment, or an unredeemed key
If the banner says Subscription Expired or Account Notice, check the renewal date and payment status in your Microsoft account. Update the payment method or renew, then close and reopen Office. A retail card or boxed purchase may still need its product key redeemed before activation completes.
6. Remove stale Office licenses
Use Microsoft’s Office License Removal Tool when Office repeatedly selects the wrong entitlement, you have both Microsoft 365 and a one-time purchase, or signing in does not change the status.
- Quit all Office apps.
- Download and open the tool from Microsoft’s instructions.
- Follow the prompts; an administrator password may be required.
- Open Word and sign in with the intended licensed account.
- Restart the Mac if activation remains stuck, then remove the downloaded tool.
If prompted to choose between licenses, choose Microsoft 365 when that is the subscription you intend to use.
7. Reset license credentials only after the basic checks
Microsoft’s Mac activation guidance recommends opening Keychain Access from Spotlight, searching for Office, deleting the Office data-license entry, and then running the activation troubleshooter or license-removal tool. This can require signing in again and may affect activation in other Office apps, so it should not be the first step. Follow Microsoft’s activation troubleshooting instructions.
8. Address error 0xD000000C and network accounts
Error 0xD000000C can occur when a Mac user signs in with a network or Open Directory account whose keychain is effectively read-only. Sign out, use a local Mac user account, and try activation again. If no local account exists, an administrator can create one in macOS Users & Groups. Contact organizational IT if local-account use is restricted. Microsoft documents this case at Error 0xD000000C when activating Office for Mac.

When a new blank document edits normally, investigate the file instead of the account:
- In Finder, check Get Info for locked status and read/write permissions.
- Confirm you own the file or have write access to its folder.
- Check whether OneDrive or SharePoint has the file checked out, conflicted, or still syncing.
- Look for Protected View or an editing restriction inside Office.
- Try Save As to a local folder with free disk space.
If every new document is blocked, return to the activation and compatibility steps above.
When to contact Microsoft or IT
- Your license appears in the account but activation still fails after sign-in and license cleanup.
- A product key is rejected. Microsoft warns that separately sold keys from unauthorized sellers may be stolen or later blocked; request a refund and use Microsoft or an authorized retailer. See Microsoft’s invalid-key guidance.
- Your employer or school controls the Mac or account.
- A payment, Family invitation, or entitlement is incorrect.
- The Mac cannot run a currently supported macOS or Office build.

|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | One user needing desktop apps, updates, OneDrive, and multiple devices | US Microsoft Store prices checked August 2026 were $9.99/month or $99.99/year; prices vary by region, tax, promotion, and billing channel. See Microsoft’s plan page. |
| Microsoft 365 Family | Households sharing with one to six people | US prices checked August 2026 were $12.99/month or $129.99/year. Each person must use the Microsoft account receiving the invitation. |
| Office Home 2024 | One user wanting a perpetual current-release license | Microsoft’s comparison page showed changing US list prices; verify live checkout. It requires the correct Microsoft-installed Mac apps and does not activate Mac App Store versions. See Microsoft’s comparison page. |
Diagnose first, purchase second. A valid perpetual license, an administrator-assigned license, or an app-source mismatch may be fixable without buying Office again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I edit in Word Online but not Word on my Mac?
Word for the web can be available with a free Microsoft account, while the Mac desktop app requires a qualifying desktop license and successful activation.
Do I need Microsoft 365 to edit Office files on a Mac?
No. A compatible one-time Office license can permit editing in the Microsoft-installed Mac apps. The Mac App Store versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint specifically require a Microsoft 365 subscription for editing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan Office 2024 edit without a subscription?
Yes, when the Office 2024 perpetual license is genuine, activated with its associated account, and paired with a compatible Microsoft-distributed Mac installation.

- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX

Will deleting Office license files delete my documents?
No. License cleanup removes activation data, not Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files, but you will need to sign in and activate again.
Why did editing stop after a macOS update?
The update may have exposed an unsupported macOS/Office combination. Microsoft documents a reduced-functionality compatibility issue beginning July 13, 2026; update both macOS and Office before resetting credentials.
Can my employer fix this?
Yes. An administrator may need to assign the desktop-app license, approve the device, change a conditional-access policy, or provide a local account for activation.
Should I buy Office again?
Not before checking the licensed account, subscription status, app source, macOS and Office versions, and stale license data. A second purchase will not correct an account mismatch or incompatible Mac App Store installation.
