The toy-sized, laser-wielding mosquito robot in this headline was reported in 2018—not newly launched. Chinese robotics company LeiShen Intelligent described a small autonomous device that could find and shoot mosquitoes, but the widely repeated claim that it could kill 40 per second was never independently verified. There is no clear evidence that this original robot reached ordinary retail. Related products are now being marketed, but they range from mosquito detectors that only point to a target to preorders for laser devices whose performance and availability remain uncertain.
The robot behind the headline
On October 17, 2018, Futurism reported that Chinese robotics company LeiShen Intelligent had developed a “Laser Movable Mosquito Killer Robot.” The small mobile machine was compared to a Roomba and described as having a laser turret intended to detect and eliminate mosquitoes in an enclosed space.
The company reportedly claimed the robot could kill up to 40 mosquitoes per second and was safe for people. Those are company claims, not independently established test results. The available report does not supply a reproducible test protocol, a retail price, a confirmed sales channel, or evidence of mass production. So the accurate description is a reported device or demonstration—not a consumer robot proven to be on sale.
How a laser mosquito killer would work
A device of this kind has to do much more than point a laser at a moving speck. Its likely process has several stages:

- Detect: A camera or other optical sensor scans for small moving objects.
- Classify: Software estimates whether an object’s size and motion fit a target such as a mosquito.
- Track: The system follows the insect and predicts where it will move next.
- Aim: A fast steering mechanism, such as a galvanometer, redirects the beam.
- Engage: A short pulse is intended to damage the insect enough to bring it down.
- Disable when unsafe: Sensors or other safeguards should prevent firing when the target, background, or beam path is unsuitable.
That outline describes the engineering problem, not proof that any particular product performs each step reliably. For example, Photon Matrix’s store page describes LiDAR-assisted targeting, galvo aiming, filtering by target size, and disabling the laser if no solid background is detected. These are manufacturer descriptions; they do not by themselves establish hit rates or safety in real homes and yards.
Why mosquitoes are difficult targets
A mosquito is tiny compared with the area covered by an ordinary camera pixel, especially at a distance. IEEE Spectrum’s reporting on Bzigo’s detection system illustrates the challenge: at range, a mosquito can occupy less than one pixel, so software may have to infer what it is from its movement rather than a clear image.

Even successful detection is not the same as safe, selective destruction. A system must distinguish mosquitoes from gnats, midges, dust, and other insects; keep tracking through clutter; and know whether there is a safe direction in which to fire. Outdoor conditions add wind, sunlight, rain, foliage, and reflections. A device that can engage a target in a controlled room may not work as well in an open yard.

Nor does a sensor that recognizes “mosquito-sized” targets necessarily identify disease-carrying mosquito species. Photon Matrix says its system is designed for flying insects 2–20 mm long moving up to 1 m/s, while warning that results vary with conditions. That is a size-and-speed specification, not evidence of mosquito-only identification.

What related products are being offered now?
The current market is not one settled category. It includes detection devices, experimental laser-killing systems, and conventional traps. Availability and claims can change; the following describes the evidence in the supplied product pages as of August 2026.

Bzigo is a useful contrast: locating a mosquito and marking it with a low-risk pointer is a different, less ambitious task than autonomously firing a lethal beam. Photon Matrix and MOSQARO make the latter kind of claim, but product pages and order buttons alone do not establish independent performance, dependable shipping, or proven safety.

Laser safety and non-target insects
“Human-safe” or “eye-safe” should not be treated as a guarantee unless supported by clear technical documentation and appropriate independent evaluation. Before considering a laser device, look for its laser class, whether the beam is visible or infrared, safeguards if the unit is tipped, and what prevents firing toward people, pets, windows, mirrors, or other reflective surfaces. Software interlocks are not the same as a demonstrated physical safeguard.
Target selectivity deserves similar scrutiny. A system targeting insects by size and movement could encounter other small fliers. Photon Matrix’s product information advises keeping the unit away from flowering plants, beehives, and butterfly gardens; that caveat is more useful than an absolute promise that beneficial insects cannot be affected. Follow the product’s actual safety instructions, and do not place an experimental laser device where people or animals can enter its firing path.

The original 2018 promotion reportedly invoked mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and Zika. That does not show that a consumer laser robot reduces disease transmission. No such public-health outcome is established by the material describing these products.
What works better for which problem?
A laser device, if it works as claimed, is aimed at individual insects in a limited zone. It is not a substitute for reducing the number of mosquitoes around a home. Match the tool to the problem:
- One mosquito in a bedroom: A swatter or a detection-and-marking device such as Bzigo may be simpler than buying an autonomous laser system. Screens and bed nets help keep insects from reaching people.
- Mosquitoes around a patio: Fans and physical barriers can make the immediate sitting area less accessible. Remove standing water where possible; persistent problems may warrant professional control.
- Broad flying-insect trapping: A conventional electric trap such as DynaZap is simpler to understand, but it is not selective for mosquitoes and can affect other flying insects. Placement matters, and the manufacturer recommends keeping it away from activity areas.
- Considering a preorder or crowdfunding device: Wait for evidence of actual shipment, independent testing, clear laser-safety documentation, and a workable returns and warranty policy if you need dependable control now.
For any claimed laser killer, ask whether published tests report hit and kill rates, false positives, species tested, distances, lighting and weather conditions, and the number of trials. A claimed detection radius is not the same as demonstrated mosquito reduction across that area. Also check recurring costs, app or network requirements, power options, shipping, taxes, and whether warranty service is available where you live.
