A reported GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition connector failure involved an ASUS ROG Loki SFX-L power supply and a third-party MODDIY 16-pin cable—not NVIDIA’s supplied adapter. The cable may have contributed, but the evidence does not prove that third-party cables generally cause RTX 5090 failures, or that the graphics card itself is completely exonerated.

The incident is a reminder that high-current 16-pin connections depend on three things working together: the correct PSU-side wiring, a properly assembled cable, and a connector that is fully inserted and free from mechanical stress.

What happened in the reported RTX 5090 FE incident?

The reported system contained an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition, an ASUS ROG Loki SFX-L power supply, and a third-party MODDIY 16-pin PCIe power cable. The cable had reportedly been used with an RTX 4090 Founders Edition for about two years before the owner installed the RTX 5090.

According to the incident report, the GPU was drawing approximately 500–520 watts during gaming. The owner noticed a burning smell, and photographs showed thermal damage at both the graphics-card connector and the PSU-side connection.

The photographs demonstrate that a high-current connector system suffered physical heat damage. They do not, by themselves, establish which component started the failure. Possible contributors include incomplete insertion, cable tension, a damaged terminal, poor contact resistance, an incorrect PSU-side pinout, cable fatigue, a damaged PSU receptacle, or an interaction between the cable and the particular GPU and PSU.

Does this prove third-party cables are unsafe?

No. “Third-party” identifies where a cable was purchased; it does not describe its electrical quality or compatibility.

The important questions are:

  • Is the cable designed for the exact PSU model or an explicitly supported PSU family?
  • Does its PSU-side pinout match that PSU?
  • Are its terminals and crimps suitable for the expected current?
  • Is it a direct replacement cable, an extension, or an adapter?
  • Is it intended for 12VHPWR, 12V-2×6, ATX 3.0, ATX 3.1, or a specific combination?
  • Has it been bent sharply, repeatedly unplugged, or placed under sideways tension?
  • Is the connector completely inserted and latched?

A single user report cannot establish a failure rate. It also cannot prove that every RTX 5090 Founders Edition has a connector defect. Conversely, the fact that a third-party cable was involved does not prove that the GPU and PSU were faultless.

The most dangerous modular-PSU mistake

Modular PSU cables are not universal. Two cables can use identical-looking connectors and still have different wiring on the PSU side. A cable from one brand—or even one product family—may be electrically incompatible with another PSU.

Never reuse a modular cable simply because it fits. Do not mix cables from different brands, and do not assume that “same brand” means “same pinout.” Verify compatibility using the PSU manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model number.

Labels such as 600W, PCIe 5.0, ATX 3.0, or ATX 3.1 do not, on their own, prove that a replacement cable is safe for a particular PSU. A cable can have an appropriate GPU-side connector and still be wrong for the PSU-side receptacle.

12VHPWR and 12V-2×6: what is the difference?

12VHPWR is the 16-pin high-current connector associated with PCIe 5.0 graphics power. 12V-2×6 is a revised connector specification intended to improve retention and contact behavior, including changes involving the sense pins and terminal geometry.

The terms are related, but neither is a universal safety guarantee. The exact GPU socket, PSU socket, cable construction, terminal design, and installation still matter. A product marketed as “12VHPWR,” “12V-2×6,” or “600W” must still be checked against the PSU model and the manufacturer’s compatibility information.

Technical background is available from CableMod’s 12V-2×6 guide and MODDIY’s connector documentation.

Why can a 16-pin connector overheat?

A high-current connection needs sufficient metal-to-metal contact across the relevant terminals. If a plug is only partly inserted, becomes misaligned, or is pulled sideways by cable tension, the effective contact area can decrease.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That can increase contact resistance and concentrate heat in a small area. The plastic housing may soften or deform, which can reduce contact pressure further. The result can be a worsening cycle:

  1. Contact area decreases.
  2. Resistance and localized heating increase.
  3. The housing or terminal begins to deform.
  4. Contact quality deteriorates further.
  5. More current may be forced through fewer effective contacts.

This is a general electrical explanation for connector heating, not proof of the initiating cause in the reported RTX 5090 incident. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 User Guide specifically instructs owners to insert the plug fully and ensure it is seated flush.

Why the reported 500–520-watt load matters

A sustained high power draw increases the consequences of any weak contact, damaged terminal, poor crimp, or mechanical misalignment. The reported 500–520-watt gaming load was near the upper range associated with a 600W-capable 16-pin connection.

That does not mean the RTX 5090 exceeded the connector’s rating. A 600W rating is not a guarantee against poor assembly, incompatible PSU wiring, cable damage, or improper installation. Total GPU power also is not necessarily distributed perfectly evenly across every terminal, and transient behavior can matter in addition to average board power.

As for the 12+4pin connector, 2 of 4 pins are connected with power wires while another 2 pins are GND wires

Does two years of RTX 4090 use prove the cable was safe?

No. Prior use is relevant history, but it is not certification.

During that period, the cable could have experienced terminal wear, repeated insertion and removal, unnoticed crimp damage, or changes in routing. Installing a different GPU can also alter cable tension, case clearance, connector alignment, and current behavior. A cable that worked with an RTX 4090 is not automatically validated for an RTX 5090 and a particular PSU configuration.

Could the ASUS Loki PSU have contributed?

Yes. Reports indicated damage at the PSU-side connection as well as at the GPU. That keeps several possibilities open:

  • The cable may not have been intended for the exact Loki model.
  • The PSU-side connector or terminal may have been damaged.
  • The cable may not have been fully seated at the PSU.
  • The PSU receptacle, cable crimp, or pinout may have contributed.
  • The GPU-side and PSU-side connections may have interacted under load.

The reported PSU was described in coverage as an ATX 3.0 unit. ATX 3.0 versus ATX 3.1 is not, by itself, enough to determine compatibility. The supplied cable, connector implementation, and exact PSU model matter more than the generation label.

Is NVIDIA’s supplied adapter the safest choice?

For most RTX 5090 Founders Edition owners, NVIDIA’s supplied adapter is the least ambiguous option because the company’s installation guide explicitly directs users to use it. It avoids uncertainty about whether a generic modular replacement cable matches the PSU-side pinout.

Best Value
BestParts 4x8pin to 16pin 12VHPWR PWR Cable Compatible with RTX 50XX Series
  • 4x 8pin to mini12+4Pin Converter cable

  • Replacement for RTX 5070 5080 5090 4090 4080 L20 L40 H100
  • You will receive: 1x Cable as pictured

The adapter is not failure-proof. It still requires fully seated connections, correct use of the PCIe leads, careful routing, and adequate clearance from the case side panel. Its disadvantages are extra cable bulk and a more difficult installation in some small-form-factor systems.

Which cable should an RTX 5090 FE owner use?

Option Best suited to Main consideration
NVIDIA-supplied adapter Owners prioritizing the clearest documented path Use all required PCIe inputs as instructed and route it without stress.
Native PSU-manufacturer 12V-2×6 cable Users whose PSU officially supports that exact cable Verify the exact PSU model or supported model family; same-brand is not enough.
Specialist third-party direct cable Experienced builders needing custom length or SFF routing Confirm pinout, current rating, connector design, and warranty terms.
Extensions or angled adapters Only when specifically verified for the system Each extra connection adds another possible contact and mechanical failure point.

MODDIY and CableMod offer specialist cable products, but their compatibility and compliance descriptions are vendor information—not independent proof that a cable is suitable for every modular PSU.

Installation checklist

Before connecting the GPU

  1. Shut down the computer, switch off the PSU, and disconnect AC power.
  2. Confirm that the cable is intended for the exact PSU model or an explicitly supported family.
  3. Inspect the cable for bent terminals, damaged plastic, loose wires, discoloration, or a damaged latch.
  4. Do not use a cable showing previous heat damage or deformation.
  5. Plan routing so the cable is not pulled sideways by the case, GPU, or side panel.

At the GPU connector

  1. Insert the plug straight into the GPU socket.
  2. Push it fully into place until it is seated flush.
  3. Confirm that the retention latch is engaged; do not rely only on hearing a click.
  4. Avoid a sharp bend immediately next to the connector.
  5. Ensure the side panel does not press against or push the cable after the case is closed.

When using NVIDIA’s multi-plug adapter

Connect all required PCIe power leads as specified by NVIDIA and the PSU manufacturer. Avoid substituting a single daisy-chained lead where separate PSU cables are required or recommended. If you are unsure about the correct arrangement, use the GPU and PSU documentation rather than guessing.

Warning signs that require immediate shutdown

Stop using the system immediately if you notice:

  • A burning or hot-plastic smell.
  • Smoke, crackling, or abnormal electrical noise.
  • Unexpected shutdowns under load.
  • Discoloration around either connector.
  • Softened, melted, or misshapen plastic.
  • Heat concentrated on one side of the plug.
  • A connector that appears loose or no longer sits flush.

Switch off the PSU and disconnect AC power. Do not continue operating the GPU to “see whether it gets worse,” and do not simply replace the cable while continuing to use a damaged GPU socket or PSU receptacle.

Photograph the connectors before disassembly and contact NVIDIA, the GPU retailer, the PSU manufacturer, and the cable manufacturer as appropriate. Warranty responsibility can become complicated when a third-party modular cable is involved, so preserve the cable, PSU, GPU, purchase records, and photographs.

What this report does—and does not—prove

  • It does show: a reported RTX 5090 FE system suffered thermal damage involving a third-party 16-pin cable, with reported damage at both ends.
  • It suggests: the cable, its connections, the PSU-side interface, installation, or an interaction among them may have contributed.
  • It does not show: that every third-party cable is unsafe.
  • It does not show: that every RTX 5090 FE has a connector defect.
  • It does not provide: a reliable failure rate or an independent laboratory root-cause analysis.
  • It does not prove: that a “600W” or “PCIe 5.0” label guarantees PSU compatibility.
  • It does not fully exonerate: the GPU, PSU, cable, or connector design without further examination.

Later reports have also described damage involving original or native cables, reinforcing the need to avoid treating third-party products as the sole possible cause. See Tom’s Hardware’s report for that separate account.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the reported RTX 5090 Founders Edition failure involved a third-party MODDIY cable and an ASUS ROG Loki PSU, but it does not establish a universal third-party-cable defect. For the lowest-ambiguity setup, use NVIDIA’s included adapter or an exact-model, manufacturer-approved native PSU cable. Treat custom cables as an enthusiast option: verify the PSU pinout, inspect every connector, seat the plug flush, avoid sharp bends and side-panel pressure, and stop immediately if you detect heat damage or odor.
