A chapel in Lucerne, Switzerland, really did place an AI-generated Jesus avatar in a former confessional. But the 2024 installation was a temporary art-and-research experiment—not an AI priest, a sacramental confessor, or a replacement for clergy.
What happened in the chapel?
Peterskapelle (St. Peter’s Chapel) in Lucerne hosted Deus in Machina—Latin for “God in a machine”—from August 23 to October 20, 2024. The project was developed with the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts’ Immersive Realities Research Lab, alongside a related study involving the University of Lucerne’s pastoral-theology faculty. Its purpose was to explore how people respond to generative AI in a spiritual setting, not to establish a new form of ministry. HSLU’s project page describes the installation and its dates.
Visitors entered a former confession-booth space and spoke with a screen-based Jesus avatar through a microphone and speaker. The project described the system as supporting roughly 100 languages. Some media reports called the figure a “hologram,” but the project’s technical materials describe an avatar displayed on a screen, not a free-floating holographic projection. It could talk about faith; it could not hear confession
The setting is the source of much of the confusion. The booth offered a familiar, private-feeling place for a conversation, but the church explicitly said the installation was not intended to reproduce confession and did not replace the sacrament. The avatar could generate replies to spoken questions; it could not grant absolution and was not a priest or recognized religious authority. The Lucerne Catholic Church’s statement makes that distinction clear.

That matters because a convincing voice and sacred setting can make generated words feel more authoritative than they are. It is more accurate to say that “the AI Jesus avatar generated a response” than that “Jesus answered” or “the Church taught” something.
How the conversation system worked
Technical reporting identifies GPT-4o as the response-generation model and an open-source version of OpenAI’s Whisper for speech recognition. The avatar presented responses through a visual representation and spoken output. The system used during development and the configuration deployed for visitors were not necessarily identical: reporting says the public setup used a less powerful or separately configured system amid unresolved data-protection concerns about sending visitor interactions to a commercial AI service. The project drew on New Testament or theological material, but that does not make its output authoritative doctrine. Like other generative systems, it could produce plausible-sounding, incomplete, or mistaken answers. The installation’s religious framing did not give the software belief, consciousness, pastoral responsibility, or the ability to understand a visitor as a human caregiver might.

What visitors asked—and what the study counted
Reported conversation topics ranged from love, relationships, happiness, and self-improvement to God, the Church, loneliness, depression, violence, death, the afterlife, and inner or outer peace. Visitors also raised moral questions, including assisted suicide and LGBTQ+ topics. The breadth of subjects shows why the experiment was more than a novelty demonstration: it placed an AI in a setting where people might bring intimate questions, even though it was not equipped or authorized to provide pastoral, medical, or crisis care.
The official first-results report recorded about 900 conversations and 290 completed visitor questionnaires. Those numbers measure different things: a conversation is not necessarily a unique person, and the questionnaire total is not a count of everyone who interacted with the avatar. Some participants may have returned. The project’s report and the University of Lucerne’s summary describe the results.
Researchers reported that many participants found the experience creative, thought-provoking, or spiritually meaningful; others were skeptical or noticed limitations in the replies. These are reported reactions, not proof that the AI produced a religious experience or that it can perform ministry. The participants were self-selected visitors to an unusual installation, so the findings should not be generalized to churchgoers as a whole.

The privacy tension behind the confessional setting
Visitors were warned not to disclose personally identifying information. The project described verbal and written warnings, church personnel, a data-protection concept, and technical filtering intended to remove some kinds of identifying information from text processing. Those protections are relevant, but they do not turn an AI interaction into sacramental confidentiality, legal privilege, medical privacy, or therapeutic care.

Someone might disclose something intimate despite the warning, especially when addressing a figure presented as Jesus. That is a risk of the context, not evidence that a particular visitor’s data was mishandled.

Deus in Machina raised questions rather than resolving them. Can a machine seem spiritually responsive without having faith? What obligations arise when an AI gives religiously framed advice? Does an avatar in a sacred space invite more trust than a chatbot on an ordinary screen? And how should systems respond to questions involving grief, depression, violence, abuse, self-harm, or assisted suicide?

An AI’s calm tone is not evidence of competence or accountability. This installation was not a substitute for a priest, pastoral counselor, mental-health professional, crisis service, or emergency response. Its value as an experiment lies partly in exposing how setting, voice, language, and religious imagery can shape trust in a system that remains software.
Is the AI Jesus booth still open?
No. The original installation ended on October 20, 2024, when the machine was switched off. HSLU discussed a possible “AI Jesus 2.0” research phase in 2026 and said it was seeking partners; that is a later development, not evidence that the original booth remains available. HSLU’s 2026 update concerns that separate phase.
