A repeatedly reappearing executable in Windows Startup is suspicious, but it is not automatically proof of malware. The usual reason deletion fails is that another component—a scheduled task, registry value, service, script, installer, or second program—is recreating the file.
Do not begin by repeatedly deleting the EXE. First record its exact path and identity, find what launches it, disable that launcher, then scan and verify that it stays gone. Microsoft’s free Autoruns is the most useful tool for mapping persistence beyond the visible Startup folder.
What a recurring Startup executable can mean
Several different things may appear to be “an EXE in the Startup folder”:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

.bat,.cmd,.vbs,.js, or.ps1script that launches or recreates the file. - A Task Manager startup entry backed by a registry key, scheduled task, service, or packaged application.
- An entry shown in a startup-related interface even though the file is not physically in either Startup folder.
A random-looking filename, an unsigned file, or a location such as %AppData% raises suspicion, but none of those facts proves malware by itself. Legitimate software can use helper processes, and some installers repair or recreate missing components.

Suspicion increases when the file is recreated after deletion, has no valid signature, lives in %Temp% or a newly created hidden directory, launches through a browser-related process, causes unexplained CPU or disk activity, disables security tools, or appears alongside unrecognized account logins.
1. Preserve evidence before removing anything
Before deleting or quarantining the file, record:
- The filename and extension.
- The full path.
- Whether the Startup item is an executable, shortcut, script, or other file.
- The shortcut target and command-line arguments, if applicable.
- File size, creation time, and last-modified time.
- Publisher, product name, and description.
- Whether the file has a valid digital signature.
- When it returns: at boot, at logon, on a schedule, after opening a particular program, or after reconnecting to the internet.
For a file at a known path, PowerShell can collect useful evidence:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:fullpathfile.exe"
Get-FileHash "C:fullpathfile.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Get-Item "C:fullpathfile.exe" |
Select-Object FullName,Length,CreationTime,LastWriteTime
A valid signature supports the claimed publisher’s identity and file integrity, but it does not prove that you want the software installed or that the publisher’s program was not abused. Conversely, an unsigned file is not automatically malicious.
You may check a hash or sample with a reputable multi-engine service, but consider privacy and company policy before uploading confidential or proprietary files. A zero-detection result is not proof of safety; detections can change, packed files can be difficult to analyze, and false positives occur.
2. Check both Windows Startup folders
Press Win + R, enter each command, and press Enter:
shell:startup
shell:common startup
These normally correspond to:
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup
%ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartUp
Inspect the item carefully. If it is a shortcut, open Properties and record the target path rather than treating the shortcut itself as the payload. If it is a script, open it only with appropriate caution and inspect its commands without executing it.
Do not assume that deleting a visible shortcut removes the underlying persistence. A scheduled task, registry value, or service may recreate it at the next logon.

3. Use Task Manager only as a quick first check
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect unfamiliar entries. You can right-click an item and choose Disable as a reversible test.
Task Manager is useful for a quick shutdown of a startup item, but it is not a complete inventory. It may not show the scheduled task, service, registry value, or script that actually restores the executable.
4. Map persistence with Microsoft Autoruns
Download Autoruns from Microsoft’s official Sysinternals Autoruns page, not from a third-party download site. Microsoft’s page lists Autoruns v14.3, updated June 17, 2026. Extract the archive and run Autoruns64.exe as administrator.
- Allow the scan to finish.
- Press Ctrl + F or choose Find.
- Search for the exact filename, part of the path, or the suspected publisher.
- Inspect every match, including entries outside the main Logon view.
- Use Options → Hide Signed Microsoft Entries to reduce noise when appropriate.
Autoruns can enumerate Startup-folder items, Run and RunOnce registry entries, scheduled tasks, services, Explorer extensions, drivers, and other auto-start locations. The filter reduces Microsoft-signed entries; it does not mean that every remaining entry is malicious.
For each match, examine the image path, publisher, description, timestamp, command line, and location. Compare the path with the file you recorded. A coherent publisher and an installation directory belonging to software you knowingly installed support legitimacy. A random name in a user-writable directory with no publisher and an unexplained launcher deserves more scrutiny.
Prefer unchecking a suspicious entry before deleting anything. This disables the auto-start mechanism while preserving a reversible record. Reboot, then check whether the file returns. If it does, another persistence point may still be active.
Autoruns is powerful, not automatic. Disabling the wrong entry can break legitimate software or Windows behavior. Do not remove an unfamiliar item merely because its name is obscure.

5. Inspect Scheduled Tasks
Press Win + R, type taskschd.msc, and press Enter. Review Task Scheduler Library and suspicious subfolders.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
For each possible match, inspect:
- Triggers: startup, logon, idle, daily, or repeating schedules.
- Actions: the executable or script, arguments, and working directory.
- History: whether the task ran when the file reappeared.
- Last Run Time: whether it matches the recurrence.
Disable a confirmed suspicious task first. You can export it as a backup before deleting it. Delete it only after confirming that it is unwanted or malicious. Do not remove an obscure Microsoft task solely because its name looks unfamiliar; verify its action path and signer.
An optional command-line inventory is:
schtasks /query /fo LIST /v
If the filename is known, a targeted search may help:
schtasks /query /fo LIST /v | findstr /i "file.exe"
Command output can be noisy, so use it to confirm findings rather than as the only diagnostic method.
6. Check registry auto-start locations
Common registry locations include:
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOnce
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit registry redirection can make manual inspection confusing. Autoruns generally presents these locations more safely and clearly than searching the registry by hand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you must edit a confirmed unwanted value:
- Export the relevant registry key first.
- Record the value name and full command line.
- Verify the referenced file’s path, publisher, and signature.
- Remove only the confirmed unwanted value.
- Reboot and rescan.
Avoid registry cleaners and “PC repair” utilities. They can remove legitimate entries while failing to address the actual persistence mechanism.
Why deleting the EXE alone often fails
The executable may be only the payload. A separate component can download, extract, or recreate it through:

- Cloud synchronization or profile restoration.
- Several persistence mechanisms operating at once.
Disable the launcher before removing the payload when possible. Otherwise, you may see repeated reinfection, error messages, or a newly named copy after every reboot.
7. Scan in a safe sequence
If the file is active, repeatedly returning, or associated with account or browser problems, treat the computer as potentially compromised while you investigate.
- Save evidence: record the path, hash, timestamps, screenshots, and any detection names.
- Isolate if necessary: disconnect from the internet when there are signs of active downloading, credential theft, or remote access.
- Avoid sensitive logins: do not use the suspect computer for email, banking, gaming, or social accounts.
- Run a Microsoft Defender Full scan: open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options, choose Full scan, and start it.
- Run Microsoft Defender Offline: use Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save work first because Windows will restart.
- Review results: after Windows starts again, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
- Recheck persistence: inspect Autoruns, Startup folders, scheduled tasks, services, and Run keys again.
Microsoft says Defender Offline scans after a restart in the Windows Recovery Environment rather than loading normal Windows first. That can make it harder for persistent malware to hide or defend itself. It can detect and remove some threats, but it is not a guarantee against every compromise.
Do not run several malware-removal products simultaneously. Tool stacking can cause conflicts, remove evidence, and make the diagnosis harder. A reputable second-opinion scanner can be useful when Defender finds nothing, but it should complement—not replace—persistence analysis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use Safe Mode when normal cleanup is blocked
Safe Mode can help when the file is locked, immediately recreated, or interfering with security software. In current Windows versions, use:
Settings → System → Recovery → Advanced startup → Restart now
→ Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart
→ 4 for Safe Mode
Safe Mode is not a substitute for finding the launcher. Some malware uses services, tasks, or drivers that may still operate, and security products can behave differently in Safe Mode.
If the file is running, Microsoft’s free Process Explorer can help identify its parent process. For advanced troubleshooting, Process Monitor can show which process writes the file again. These tools are useful when Autoruns identifies the symptom but not the program responsible for recreating it.

9. Handle possible account compromise separately
An unfamiliar login, password-reset message, disabled browser extension, or security alert should be taken seriously, but it does not prove that the recurring executable caused the event.
If compromise is possible:
- Disconnect or isolate the suspect computer.
- Use a known-clean phone or computer to change the email password first, followed by other important accounts.
- Revoke active sessions and remove unknown devices.
- Enable multifactor authentication.
- Check forwarding rules, recovery addresses, connected applications, and recent security events.
- Contact the service if unauthorized changes occurred.
- Do not reuse the old password.
Changing passwords on the potentially compromised machine can expose the new credentials if an infostealer or remote-access tool is active.
10. When a clean Windows reinstall is the better choice
Consider backing up important documents and performing a clean Windows installation when:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The executable returns after persistence removal and Defender Offline scanning.
- There is evidence of credential theft or remote access.
- Security tools are disabled or tampered with.
- System files, security policies, or administrator accounts have been altered.
- A bootkit, rootkit, or unknown persistence mechanism is suspected.
- You cannot establish reasonable confidence that the system is clean.
Back up documents selectively. Do not blindly restore unknown executables, pirated software, or entire application-data directories. Change important passwords from a clean device before or during the reinstall process.
What the original forum case does—and does not—show
The title is based on a BleepingComputer support thread opened on April 21, 2020, about an executable named pglbjboq.exe. The user reported repeated recreation, slowdowns, browser-extension problems, and possible account issues. The thread was closed on May 4, 2020 because the requested diagnostic logs were not provided.
That makes the thread a useful example of the symptoms, not a confirmed malware analysis. It does not establish that the file was definitely Ramnit, that Tencent GameLoop or Windows Essentials caused it, or that the reported Instagram and Steam events were caused by the executable. Antivirus labels can be heuristic or conflicting, and a definitive attribution would require stronger evidence such as a sample, hash, telemetry, or authoritative analysis. See the original BleepingComputer thread for the reported case history.
Final verification checklist
- Record the exact filename, full path, timestamps, and SHA-256 hash.
- Determine whether the Startup item is an EXE, shortcut, script, or only a Task Manager entry.
- Check both
shell:startupandshell:common startup. - Inspect the publisher and digital signature.
- Search Autoruns across Logon, Scheduled Tasks, Services, registry locations, and other relevant tabs.
- Inspect scheduled tasks and Run keys before deleting the payload.
- Disable suspicious launchers before removing files, using reversible steps first.
- Run Defender Full scan and Defender Offline.
- Reboot, rescan, and confirm that the file does not return.
- Change account passwords from a clean device if compromise is possible.
- Reinstall Windows when cleanup cannot establish confidence in the system.
