Strange Parts creator Scotty Allen modified a Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold with silicon-carbon battery cells from the HONOR Magic V6, bringing the reported nominal capacity to about 9,600mAh. The phone reportedly powered on, but the transplant required chassis and component modifications and left a visible line across the display. It is a proof of concept, not a practical or validated battery upgrade.
What changed in the Galaxy Z TriFold
Samsung specifies the Galaxy Z TriFold’s three-cell battery system at 5,600mAh typical capacity and 5,437mAh rated capacity. The cells are distributed across the device’s three panels, rather than gathered in one simple battery compartment. Samsung also lists 45W wired charging and up to 17 hours of video playback under its stated test conditions. Samsung’s announcement explains the TriFold battery layout and specifications.

Allen’s modified phone reportedly used three silicon-carbon battery components taken from the HONOR Magic V6, assembled to provide approximately 9,600mAh nominal capacity. That is not the same as installing the Magic V6’s complete 6,660mAh battery unchanged. The donor phone’s official specifications list a 6,660mAh battery and 921Wh/L energy density. Those are HONOR’s product specifications, not measurements of the transplanted pack in the TriFold. HONOR’s Magic V6 announcement provides its battery figures.

Why the cells did not simply drop in
Higher energy density can put more capacity into a given volume, but it does not make batteries interchangeable. Cell shape, thickness, connectors, electrical characteristics, protection electronics and mechanical clearances still have to match the host phone.

According to contemporaneous coverage of the modification, the donor cells were too large for the TriFold’s original spaces. Allen reportedly milled parts of the chassis, modified hinge-related components and removed the bottom speaker to make room. The report also says he replaced the HONOR battery-management electronics with Samsung’s system. These are reported details of the creator’s experiment, not a published Samsung repair procedure. Gizmochina’s account describes the reported physical changes and result.
A battery-management system is only one part of safe operation. Cells also depend on suitable charging controls, temperature sensing, protection limits, balancing and mechanical support. A phone booting with a different pack does not establish that those systems behave safely across charging, heavy use, heat or long-term aging.
What 9,600mAh means—and what it does not
Compared with Samsung’s 5,600mAh typical-capacity figure, 9,600mAh is 4,000mAh more, or about 71.4% higher on a nominal-capacity comparison. Against Samsung’s 5,437mAh rated figure, the difference is about 76.6%. The 9,600mAh figure is reported for the modified setup; it is not an independently verified runtime result.

mAh alone is not a universal measure of stored energy: voltage and battery configuration matter, which is why watt-hours are often more useful for comparing packs. And even a higher nominal capacity does not translate directly into a matching increase in screen time. Runtime also depends on display brightness and use, processor load, network conditions, software activity, the usable voltage range and the device’s power-management limits.
The available coverage establishes that the modified TriFold reportedly powered on and ran. It does not establish standardized battery-drain results, charging performance, temperature behavior, wireless charging, battery-health calibration, swelling behavior or long-term stability. It therefore cannot support a claim that the phone lasts 71% longer or can safely use the full reported capacity in ordinary conditions.
The phone was not restored to factory condition
Coverage reports that a white line appeared across the display after reassembly. The reported damage is a reminder that powering on is not the same as returning a foldable phone to normal condition; the specific cause of the line is not established by the reporting cited here.

Milling the chassis, changing hinge components and removing a speaker also mean the original mechanical design has been altered. No cited source establishes that the modified device retained its factory water- or dust-resistance, durability, charging or wireless-charging performance, or warranty coverage. Those characteristics should be treated as lost or unverified after this work.

This transplant is not a conventional battery replacement. It involved work on a complex foldable’s chassis, hinge area and battery system, with reported display damage and a sacrificed speaker. It is not a procedure ordinary owners should attempt or a reason to buy loose donor cells. Lithium-based batteries can cause fire, toxic smoke or injury if punctured, crushed, short-circuited, overheated or charged improperly.
Foldables add particular mechanical constraints: batteries sit around moving hinges and multiple panels, while extra thickness or pressure can affect hinge movement, display curvature, flex cables, panel alignment and heat paths. A commercial design would need to validate all of those interactions, along with charging and protection behavior, reliability, aging and regulatory requirements. The transplant demonstrates a possibility for an individual experiment; it does not show that a manufacturer can safely apply the same arrangement in a shipping product.
HONOR’s role and what the experiment demonstrates
Android Authority reported that the Strange Parts video was sponsored by HONOR, whose battery technology supplied the donor cells. The sponsorship is relevant context, but it does not by itself establish or disprove the physical result. Allen demonstrated the modification; neither Samsung nor an independent battery-safety laboratory certified it. Android Authority’s report discusses the experiment and sponsorship.
The experiment is a striking demonstration of the capacity potential associated with silicon-carbon cells, but not proof that silicon-carbon batteries are inherently unsafe or that a 9,600mAh TriFold is a viable product. HONOR’s stated cell energy density describes its own battery technology; successful use in another handset would still require cells, mechanics, electronics and safety validation designed for that device.
