Why 256GB can cost less than 64GB
Apple’s storage tiers do not have to move in lockstep at retail. Stores set prices by individual configuration, and a particular color or capacity can receive a deeper temporary discount than another. A cheaper configuration can sell out first, while a larger one remains in stock. Sellers, fulfillment, coupons, and stock can also differ between listings.
That can create a short-lived price inversion without changing Apple’s normal storage hierarchy. It is also important to compare like with like: a 256GB Wi‑Fi iPad is not directly comparable to a 64GB cellular model, and a renewed unit is not equivalent to a new one. A percentage-off label may use a list or reference price rather than a price the item regularly sold for.

Configuration-level variation is not unique to the 2024 report. MacRumors’ November 2022 Black Friday roundup recorded the 10th-generation iPad at $419 for 64GB Wi‑Fi and $569 for 256GB Wi‑Fi, and noted that prices and stock varied by configuration and color. Is 256GB worth choosing?
If two otherwise identical, new Wi‑Fi models are available and the 256GB version costs no more than the 64GB one, the larger capacity is usually the better buy. It leaves more room for games, photos, downloaded films, school files, and creative apps, and reduces the need to manage local storage. For a rough comparison, divide each configuration’s price by its capacity in gigabytes. That price-per-gigabyte calculation is useful, but it does not measure speed, screen quality, or how long the device will remain supported.

64GB may be enough if you mainly browse, stream, email, and keep files in cloud storage. 256GB is more useful for students with large app and document libraries, families sharing a tablet, travelers who download media, and people planning to keep the device for years. Storage does not make the iPad faster or improve its display, cameras, or accessory support.
The 10th-generation iPad’s A14 chip and 10.9-inch display can suit everyday tablet use, but it is older hardware. If a newer standard iPad with 128GB costs only a little more, compare its processor, features, and expected useful life against the older model’s extra storage. Buyers doing demanding creative work or seeking a laptop substitute should compare an iPad Air or a computer suited to their applications rather than assuming storage alone makes this model appropriate. Check Apple’s current iPadOS compatibility information and the current product specifications before deciding; don’t infer future software support from a discount.

Check these details before buying
- Capacity: Confirm the selected configuration and product details say 256GB, not 64GB.
- Connectivity: Make sure it is Wi‑Fi or Wi‑Fi + Cellular as you need. Cellular usually costs more and may involve a carrier plan.
- Condition: Check that the unit is new if that is what you intend to buy; renewed, refurbished, and open-box listings are different offers.
- Seller and returns: Check who sells and ships the item, the return window, and warranty terms. A marketplace page can show changing offers from different sellers.
- Model and region: Verify the model number and that it is the intended regional version, especially if the listing is unusually cheap.
- Discount conditions: Look for a coupon checkbox, membership requirement, trade-in, or checkout promotion. Confirm the price after applying any conditions.
- Final cost: Check the cart total, tax, shipping, and delivery date; compare the same capacity, connectivity, and condition at Apple, Best Buy, and Walmart.
- Accessories: Check compatibility for the exact iPad before buying a Pencil, keyboard, or case. Do not assume support for Apple Pencil Pro or a newer keyboard accessory.
Who should consider the older 256GB iPad?
Consider it if the exact configuration is verified, the unit is new from a seller with clear returns, and its final price is compelling next to newer models. The deal is especially attractive when 256GB costs the same as or less than the equivalent 64GB model and you will actually use the extra space.
Skip it if you need cellular service but found only a Wi‑Fi deal, want newer hardware or particular accessory features, or can buy a newer 128GB model for a modest premium. Also be cautious if the price applies only to a renewed unit, an unfamiliar marketplace seller, or a comparison price that does not reflect the model’s normal street price.
