MoveTree: The Active Directory Object Manager

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MoveTree.exe was a legacy Windows command-line utility for moving selected Active Directory objects between domains in the same forest. Microsoft documented it for domain reconsolidation and organizational restructuring, not as a general-purpose migration system. Its historical workflow could check and then move parts of an AD tree, but it did not complete computer-account, profile, script, personal-data, group, or Group Policy migration.

What MoveTree.exe was designed to do

Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB238394 describes MoveTree.exe as a command-line utility that moves objects such as organizational units (OUs) and users between domains in a single forest. The utility was aimed at Windows 2000-era domain consolidation and restructuring.

MoveTree operated on directory objects and their placement in the directory tree. It was not a file-transfer tool, a workstation migration product, or a complete identity-and-policy migration platform.

Historical requirements and scope

The KB238394 procedure listed these requirements for its Windows 2000-era scenario:

  • Working DNS name resolution between the domains.
  • Sufficient permissions in both the source and destination domains.
  • A destination domain running in Native mode.
  • Execution on the source domain’s RID Master, targeting the destination domain’s RID Master.

The article applies to Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server and was last modified in 2003. Those requirements and syntax describe the historical tool; they should not be treated as validated instructions for current Windows Server releases.

How the documented workflow worked

MoveTree’s historical command-line procedure had three meaningful modes. The exact command also identified the source and destination directory service agents (DSAs) and the distinguished names of the source and destination subtrees.

Mode Purpose Documented behavior
/check Preflight validation Checks the entire tree before objects are moved.
/start Begin a move Starts the operation and, according to the KB, performs a check by default.
/continue Resume a failed operation Continues an operation that did not complete successfully.

In practical terms, an administrator would validate connectivity, permissions, naming, and the selected subtree, run the move, then inspect the logs and resolve anything left behind. The old documentation does not make this a modern, transactionally reversible migration process.

What MoveTree could and could not migrate

Objects it was intended to move

  • Organizational units and their directory hierarchy.
  • User objects and other object classes supported by the legacy utility.

The KB also says that some object classes cannot be moved. A successful directory-object move therefore depends on the classes present in the selected tree.

Computer accounts are not a completed MoveTree migration

MoveTree should not be used on the assumption that it makes computers usable in the destination domain. The documentation says computer objects are not properly moved for functioning use there. It notes that accounts may appear in the destination but are not valid for login and directs administrators to Netdom for computer-account movement.

That distinction matters: moving an OU that contains computer objects does not, by itself, finish the workstation or server migration.

Profiles, scripts, and personal data stay outside Active Directory

User profiles, logon scripts, and personal data associated with directory objects are not carried over by MoveTree. The KB says those items require additional scripts or management tools. Plan them as separate workstreams rather than assuming the object move preserves a user’s Windows environment.

Groups and memberships need separate treatment

The historical documentation says local and domain global groups are not moved. It also states that group memberships remain intact. That combination can leave a directory relationship present while the group objects themselves still require separate planning.

Linked Group Policy objects do not follow the OU automatically

When an OU with linked GPOs is moved, the links can continue to obtain policy from the source domain. The KB recommends recreating the GPOs in the destination domain and deleting the old source-domain GPOs when appropriate. Moving the OU is therefore not equivalent to relocating its policy infrastructure.

Logs, failures, and cleanup

MoveTree records moved objects in MoveTree.log and errors in MoveTree.err. Objects that cannot be moved remain in an orphan container under Lost and Found in the source domain.

  • Review both log files after every operation.
  • Identify unsupported object classes and dependency failures before attempting a continuation.
  • Account for objects left in Lost and Found during reconciliation and cleanup.
  • Do not interpret a completed command as proof that computers, profiles, scripts, data, groups, and policy have also been migrated.

The presence of a /continue mode provides recovery for an interrupted or failed operation, but it does not remove the need to investigate the original errors.

MoveTree compared with current Microsoft tooling

Question MoveTree Current context documented by Microsoft
Maintenance and support Windows 2000-era utility; KB content last modified in 2003. Current RSAT documentation covers AD DS and AD LDS tools on supported Windows 10/11 Pro and Enterprise clients and supported Windows Server versions. It does not establish MoveTree as part of RSAT.
Cross-domain scope Designed for selected object moves within one forest. RSAT availability does not prove a one-for-one replacement for this workflow.
Computer accounts Not a complete computer migration; the old KB points to Netdom. No replacement claim is established by the RSAT documentation.
Profiles and personal data Not migrated. Must be handled with separate migration methods.
GPO links Can continue pointing to the source domain; recreate policies in the destination. Requires separate policy planning.
Recovery and records /check, /start, /continue, MoveTree.log, MoveTree.err, and Lost and Found handling. Tool-specific behavior must be verified for whichever current method is selected.

Active Directory administrative commands such as dsadd, dsmod, dsrm, and dsquery perform create, modify, delete, and search operations; Microsoft’s command-line guidance does not present them as parity replacements for MoveTree’s legacy subtree move. It also warns that deleting an OU deletes its contained objects.

Do not confuse MoveTree with ADMT

ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tool) is a separate product, not another name for MoveTree. Microsoft’s support-policy page dated February 12, 2026, says ADMT was released for Windows 2000/Server 2003-era migrations, was not updated for several later operating systems, and that the ADMT 3.2 codebase is deprecated with development halted. It is not eligible for security fixes, bug fixes, or design changes, and Microsoft handles support cases on a best-effort basis.

That policy is a reason to avoid presenting ADMT casually as a modern, fully supported replacement. A current migration design should be evaluated against the operating systems, forest topology, object classes, computer-join process, profiles, data, groups, and GPO strategy involved.

Is MoveTree appropriate today?

For a contemporary environment, treat MoveTree as historical reference material rather than a default deployment recommendation. The old article can explain what the utility attempted and where its boundaries were, but it does not establish current support, compatibility, or successful results on modern Windows versions.

If you are examining an old procedure, separate the work into independently verified plans for directory objects, computer accounts, user profiles, logon scripts, personal data, groups, and Group Policy. Validate each step in a test environment and confirm current Microsoft support for the tools available in your Windows and Active Directory versions.
