There is no single best WordPress SEO plugin. Choose Yoast SEO for guided writing and a mature ecosystem, Rank Math for a broad free feature set, All in One SEO (AIOSEO) for an expansive technical and local-business toolkit, SEOPress for privacy and agency controls, and Site Kit by Google for measurement. The other four are worthwhile for specific content, automation or off-site SEO workflows. Features, prices and installation counts change; figures below reflect product information retrieved on September 30, 2026.

How to choose an SEO plugin

Match the interface to your workflow

If authors need a prompt while drafting, Yoast’s writing and readability workflow is the clearest fit. If an experienced administrator wants individual modules for redirects, schema or audits, Rank Math exposes more switches. A minimal site may be better served by Slim SEO or The SEO Framework than by a large dashboard.

Separate optimization from measurement

A plugin controls items such as titles, descriptions, canonicals, robots directives, structured data and XML sitemaps. Site Kit brings Google’s performance and traffic services into WordPress. Installing Site Kit does not remove the need for one of those optimization plugins.

Check specialist requirements before migrating

  • Local businesses should confirm the plugin’s current local-business schema and location workflow.
  • Stores should check current WooCommerce schema, product and sitemap support in the edition they plan to buy.
  • Agencies should compare white-label controls, client-site licensing and migration tools.
  • Privacy-sensitive publishers should review telemetry and connected-service settings, not just the feature checklist.

The nine best WordPress SEO plugins and tools

1. Yoast SEO — best for guided on-page work

Yoast SEO is the safest starting point for a writer who wants feedback while composing a page. Its familiar traffic-light style checks cover on-page SEO and readability, while its schema features and long-established ecosystem provide a conventional WordPress workflow. WordPress.org lists a free plugin and paid commercial upgrades, with more than 10 million active installations in 2026.

Choose it when several authors need consistent prompts and a mature interface more than a large collection of advanced switches. Review the paid feature list if you need capabilities beyond the free plugin; the free-versus-paid boundary is the upgrade decision, not a reason to install multiple SEO plugins.

2. Rank Math SEO — best free feature breadth

Rank Math is aimed at users who want many technical controls without assembling several extensions. Its documented feature set includes schema, XML sitemaps, Search Console and Analytics integrations, more than 30 SEO tests, redirects, 404 monitoring, internal-link suggestions and modules that can be enabled or disabled. WordPress.org listed more than 4 million active installations in 2026.

The modular design helps an administrator keep unused features out of the interface. Rank Math describes itself as handling on-page metadata, sitemaps, redirections, Schema and llms.txt in one place. Treat the latter as a discoverability experiment, not a ranking guarantee.

3. All in One SEO (AIOSEO) — best broad business toolkit

AIOSEO covers a wide range of site types: schema, XML, video and Google News sitemaps, local SEO, analytics, internal linking and redirects are all part of its positioning. That breadth makes it a practical shortlist candidate for a business that would otherwise combine several specialist plugins. The vendor says more than 3 million professionals use AIOSEO and offers agency licensing.

It is most compelling when local visibility, editorial operations and technical maintenance need to live in one administration area. Compare the exact license tier and included modules before purchase, especially for multiple client sites.

4. SEOPress — best for privacy and white-label agencies

SEOPress emphasizes a privacy-first approach, white-label controls and agency-oriented administration. Its listed capabilities include unlimited target keywords, migration tools, sitemaps and redirects. SEOPress says more than 350,000 websites have trusted the product since 2017.

On the pricing page retrieved September 30, 2026, SEOPress listed Pro from $49 per year for one site and $149 per year for unlimited sites. Those are recurring prices shown at that time, so check the current page before budgeting. Select SEOPress when client branding, portfolio licensing or reduced data collection matters as much as author guidance.

5. Site Kit by Google — best measurement companion

Google calls Site Kit its official WordPress plugin. It connects Search Console, Analytics, PageSpeed Insights, AdSense, Google Ads, Tag Manager, Sign in with Google and Reader Revenue Manager, giving site owners a single reporting layer inside WordPress.

Site Kit is not a replacement for a full SEO plugin: it does not take over the metadata, canonical, schema or redirect controls that determine how pages are technically presented. Pair it with one optimization plugin, then use its reports to connect changes on the site with impressions, queries, speed and conversions.

6. Squirrly SEO — for content workflows and AI-search experimentation

Squirrly SEO is worth considering when the editorial process is the center of the project. Its WordPress.org listing presents GEO (generative-engine optimization) and AEO (answer-engine optimization) positioning alongside content-focused workflows.

Those labels describe vendor features and a changing field, not guaranteed inclusion in AI answers or improved rankings. Confirm the current modules, integrations and price for your site before committing.

7. The SEO Framework — for lightweight automation

The SEO Framework targets site owners who prefer sensible automation and a small administrative footprint. It is a candidate for a brochure site or publication where the team wants core SEO handled with little intervention rather than a dashboard full of prompts.

Current 2026 feature and pricing details were not stated in the product material available for this comparison, so inspect its present documentation and compatibility information before migration.

8. Slim SEO — for minimal configuration

Slim SEO is designed for owners who want automatic basics and few decisions. That approach can reduce setup time on a straightforward site, provided you do not require extensive local, commerce, agency or editorial controls.

Current 2026 feature and pricing details were not stated in the product material available for this comparison. Check its current migration path and the exact controls exposed for titles, schema, sitemaps and redirects.

9. SE Ranking or another external SEO suite — for research outside WordPress

External suites belong in a different category from dashboard plugins. A service such as SE Ranking is useful when you need rank tracking, competitor research or broader campaign monitoring that WordPress itself does not provide.

Use one WordPress plugin for on-site technical controls and evaluate an external suite on its own merits. Do not treat an external subscription as a substitute for metadata, schema or redirect management inside the site.

A safe installation and migration sequence

  1. Record the current state. Export existing titles, descriptions, redirects and sitemap settings, and keep a backup before changing the active plugin.
  2. Choose one primary SEO plugin. Deactivate the old plugin before enabling its replacement so two systems do not emit competing metadata or sitemaps.
  3. Run the setup wizard. Set the site type, organization or person details, title separators, default social image and XML sitemap options.
  4. Review representative URLs. Check a homepage, article, category, attachment, product and local-service page where applicable. Confirm the title, canonical URL, robots directive and structured-data output.
  5. Recreate redirects. Import old redirect rules and test important retired URLs for the intended destination and status code.
  6. Connect measurement. Add Site Kit or another verified connection to Search Console and Analytics, then record a baseline for impressions, clicks, indexing and conversions.
  7. Monitor after launch. Watch 404 reports, indexing coverage and page templates for at least one publishing cycle before removing the backup exports.

AI, GEO and llms.txt: what the features do not prove

Several products now use AI-search language. Rank Math documents an llms.txt option, Squirrly SEO’s listing mentions GEO and AEO, and SEOPress describes itself as ready for AI search. These are implementation or positioning claims from vendors. None establishes that a page will rank higher, appear in an answer engine or be cited by an AI system. Judge the feature by the control it gives you, while continuing to improve factual content, crawlability, links and user experience.

Practical choice

Start with Yoast SEO if guided writing is the deciding factor. Pick Rank Math when broad modular controls in the free offering matter most. Choose AIOSEO for a business or agency seeking a wide, integrated toolkit, and SEOPress when privacy, white-label work or unlimited-site licensing dominates the decision. Add Site Kit for measurement regardless of which primary plugin you select. Consider Squirrly SEO, The SEO Framework, Slim SEO or an external suite only when their narrower workflow matches a specific requirement.
