Short answer: the widely circulated “8 Best Torrent Sites That Are Still Working in 2023” list was a historical snapshot, not a current recommendation. Its source was published on November 8, 2022, and listed The Pirate Bay, 1337x, RARBG, YTS, LimeTorrents, TorrentDownloads, Torrentz2, and IPTorrents. Availability depended on the reader’s country and the date of access, while access did not prove legality, authenticity, or safety.
This is an archive review of that list—not an endorsement of downloading copyrighted material. It does not provide mirror addresses, proxy instructions, or ways to bypass blocks.
The eight sites named in the historical list
The original source described these services as sites that were still working around late 2022 or into 2023. Treat the descriptions below as historical claims, not verified 2026 status reports.

The source list is documented in the original HackerNoon article. It did not establish a transparent ranking methodology, independent malware audit, or consistent test procedure for uptime, traffic, speed, or safety.

Why “still working” is an unreliable label
A torrent site can load successfully for one person and be blocked, offline, redirected, or cloned for another. “Working” should specify:
- the country and network tested;
- the exact date and time;
- whether the original domain or a mirror was used;
- whether search results contained active metadata rather than stale pages;
- whether registration was required;
- whether the site was free of obvious malicious redirects; and
- whether access worked on a particular device or browser.
Domains may be seized, abandoned, repurposed, or copied by impersonators. A search result or functioning homepage is therefore not evidence that a site is trustworthy, original, or legally authorized.
What a “torrent site” actually is
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer distribution protocol. Instead of receiving one complete file from one server, a client downloads pieces from multiple participants in a swarm and may upload pieces to others.

- Torrent client
- Software that processes torrent metadata or magnet links and manages connections, downloads, and uploads.
- Indexer
- A website that catalogs torrent metadata or links. An index may not host the underlying files.
- Tracker
- A coordination service that helps clients discover peers. Modern torrents can also use distributed peer discovery and other mechanisms.
- Private tracker
- A restricted community that may require registration, an invitation, payment, or ratio rules. Restricted access does not make every file lawful or safe.
- Magnet link
- A link containing identifying metadata, commonly a content hash, rather than the complete file itself. A magnet link still points a client toward a specific swarm and does not guarantee the content’s authenticity.
- Seed, peer, and leecher
- A seed has a complete copy and uploads it; a peer is participating in the swarm; “leecher” is commonly used for a participant still downloading, although it can also carry a negative meaning when someone does not upload.
Public indexes versus private trackers

“Private” and “verified” are not magic safety labels. A verified badge may reflect an uploader reputation, moderation decision, or matching metadata. It does not prove copyright permission, absence of malware, unmodified content, or safe advertising.
Is torrenting legal?
The BitTorrent protocol and torrent clients are not inherently illegal. The legal question is what is distributed and whether the distributor has permission.
In the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office explains that unauthorized uploading or downloading of copyrighted works through peer-to-peer networks can infringe the copyright owner’s reproduction or distribution rights. The Copyright Office’s general information says statutory damages may reach $30,000 per work, or up to $150,000 for willful infringement, with possible attorney-fee liability. Copyright rules and enforcement differ by country. A VPN does not create permission to copy a film, game, book, song, or software package. It may affect what some local-network observers can see, but it does not legalize infringement, guarantee anonymity, prevent malware, or verify a downloaded file.

How to torrent legally
The safest rule is to begin with the publisher or creator’s official website—not a generic index. Legitimate uses can include:
- Linux distributions and other open-source operating systems;
- public-domain works;
- creator-authorized music, films, games, or software;
- open datasets distributed through BitTorrent; and
- large files for which an organization publishes an official torrent link.
- Find the project’s official download or release page.
- Confirm that the project explicitly authorizes the torrent.
- Download the torrent file or magnet link from that official page.
- Compare the file name, checksum, cryptographic signature, and release notes with the publisher’s information.
- Scan the completed download before opening it, and follow the publisher’s installation or verification instructions.
Checksums help detect altered or incomplete files; cryptographic signatures provide stronger evidence when the signing key and verification process come from the official publisher.

Security risks readers should understand
Index pages and torrent files can expose users to risks that a client or VPN cannot solve:
- Fake download buttons: advertisements may imitate the real link and install unwanted software.
- Malvertising and redirects: pages can force new tabs, fake virus alerts, browser notifications, or deceptive extension prompts.
- Clone domains: an imitation site may copy branding while distributing malicious installers or stealing credentials.
- Executable disguises: a file presented as a video, subtitle, document, or installer may be an executable or contain a misleading extension.
- Modified software: cracked applications and unofficial installers carry elevated malware risk.
- Password-protected archives: these can make routine antivirus inspection more difficult.
- IP exposure: a user’s IP address is ordinarily visible to other peers in a public swarm.
- Bundled client offers: installers can include optional third-party software if users do not carefully reject it.
BitTorrent’s Terms of Use warn that materials accessed through its services may contain viruses, trojans, spyware, malware, or other harmful code. BitTorrent also explains that antivirus products may flag its official client as a potentially unwanted program because of optional third-party installation offers; obtain the client from the official site and decline anything unwanted, as described in its installation guidance.

Practical safety checklist
- Use a torrent client downloaded from the developer’s official website.
- Keep your operating system, browser, antivirus, and client updated.
- Do not run an executable merely because it has many seeders or a trusted label.
- Verify software against official signatures and checksums.
- Scan downloads before opening them.
- Use a non-administrator account where practical.
- Do not install browser extensions, certificate files, or “security tools” offered by torrent pages.
- Close pages showing fake virus alerts, forced notifications, or repeated redirects.
- Keep offline or versioned backups of important files.
- Check the law in your jurisdiction before downloading or sharing material.

- Large open-source files: use the project’s official download page and its published torrent, checksum, or signature.
- Public-domain media: use established archives or libraries that clearly identify rights status.
- Movies, television, music, and books: use authorized streaming, rental, purchase, subscription, or library services.
- Games and software: use the developer’s store, official platform, or publisher-hosted download.
- Creator releases: follow the creator’s own distribution links and license terms.
These routes address the reader’s real goal—getting a file or enjoying media—without relying on unstable domains, deceptive advertisements, or uncertain authorization.
What this historical list got wrong
- Date confusion: the matching article was published on November 8, 2022, despite its 2023 wording.
- Temporary availability treated as permanence: RARBG’s reported permanent shutdown in 2023 is a clear example.
- “Best” was undefined: the list mixed public indexes, a metasearch service, specialist sites, and a private tracker without a consistent ranking method.
- Unsupported numbers: traffic, database-size, speed, and safety claims lacked reproducible testing details.
- Private does not mean safe: access controls may reduce some abuse but cannot guarantee lawful content or malware-free files.
- VPN messaging can mislead: privacy products should not be presented as infringement insurance or malware protection.
Historical speed claims such as specific megabit or megabyte-per-second figures should not be treated as benchmarks. Real performance depends on swarm health, seed quality, bandwidth, geography, ISP policies, client behavior, time of day, and file popularity. The cited listicles did not provide enough methodology to make those figures comparable.
