Flying cars are real—but not in the everyday, drive-anywhere sense the phrase suggests. The eight vehicles here range from roadable aircraft and flown prototypes to personal electric aircraft and a modular car-and-aircraft system. Some have flown; a few can be ordered or are preparing for production. None is simply an autonomous electric car you can launch from any driveway.
“Real” needs a scale. A successful test flight proves a prototype flew; it does not prove the vehicle is certified for passenger service, available for delivery, or legal to drive and fly in your country. The status notes below distinguish those milestones. Company specifications, schedules, and claims are attributed to their manufacturers and are not independent test results.

“Flying car” is a popular label, not one regulatory category. A roadable aircraft drives to an airfield and flies like an airplane or gyroplane. An eVTOL uses vertical lift but may not be road-legal. A modular system keeps the car and aircraft as separate machines. Those distinctions matter more than the marketing label.
1. PAL-V Liberty: a road-approved gyroplane, not an electric car
The PAL-V Liberty is the closest on this list to the classic idea of a car that changes into an aircraft. It seats two, drives on roads, and switches into flight configuration in about five minutes, according to PAL-V’s specifications. In the air it is a gyroplane: a free-spinning rotor provides lift while a propeller moves it forward.

PAL-V says the Liberty has European road approval. That does not mean it has unrestricted aviation approval everywhere, or that a buyer can fly it without the right training and permissions. It is gasoline-powered, does not take off vertically, and needs a suitable runway or airstrip. The company lists a road speed of 160 km/h, flight speed of 180 km/h, and flight range of 400–500 km; these are manufacturer figures, not independent operating results.
The company lists an expected European price of €299,000 before taxes and works for the standard model and €499,000 for the Sport Edition. Buyers also need to account for flight training, storage, maintenance, insurance, and local registration rules. PAL-V says pilots need a gyroplane license and training; its press information provides company updates on approval and development.
2. Samson Switchblade: drive to the airport, then unfold the aircraft
The three-wheel Samson Switchblade folds its wings and tail into a road-going configuration. The idea is to drive it to an airport, unfold it, and fly it as an aircraft—not to lift off from a street. Samson reports that the Switchblade made its first flight on November 5, 2023, at Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington.

Samson is developing its SkyBrid hybrid-electric drive system and reported continued engineering and manufacturing work in 2026. The company’s product information and updates describe an ongoing development program, not proof of completed mass production. Its FAQ says the vehicle is currently too fast and heavy to qualify as a Light Sport Aircraft. “Street legal,” as the company describes it, is not a substitute for aircraft approval, pilot qualification, or permission to operate from a particular airfield.

3. Klein Vision AirCar: a sports-car shape with airplane-style flight
Klein Vision’s AirCar is a physical roadable-aircraft program. Its wings and tail fold for road travel, then extend for flight; a rear-mounted propeller provides thrust. The company has publicly demonstrated the vehicle in both driving and flight modes, which makes it one of the clearest examples of a car-like body becoming a conventional fixed-wing aircraft.
That does not make it a consumer-ready road-and-air vehicle. The company’s current public site presents the AirCar program, but the available information does not establish a current production price, delivery schedule, customer-delivery count, or certification status for each jurisdiction. Do not assume it is generally available to buy, or call it electric: the established AirCar configuration is combustion-powered. Like other fixed-wing aircraft, it needs suitable aviation infrastructure and operating permissions.
4. Alef Model A: the vertical-flying car prototype
Alef’s Model A is designed to drive on streets and take off vertically, the combination many people picture when they hear “flying car.” The company has published video of a flying-car test and describes the vehicle as being in development on its Model A page.

Any limited authorization to conduct tests must not be confused with certification for carrying paying passengers. Vertical takeoff could reduce dependence on a runway, but it does not grant permission to launch from a driveway or land in a city. Site, airspace, noise, safety, and local rules still matter.

5. Doroni H1-X: a planned two-seat electric VTOL
Doroni pitches the H1-X as a two-seat personal electric aircraft that can take off and land vertically. The company lists a 100-mile range, 95-mph cruise speed, 120-mph top speed, a 25-minute charge time, and an operating altitude of 500–1,500 feet. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications for its planned product, not independently verified in-service performance.
Doroni says its H1 prototype received an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate for testing and that it has completed more than 70 test flights. A special airworthiness certificate for testing does not equal unrestricted commercial certification. The company estimates H1-X customer deliveries beginning in 2028; that is a target, not a guaranteed launch date. Its company information describes the development and testing program. Even a VTOL aircraft needs an approved operating context; vertical lift is not a blanket license to use a private driveway.
6. Jetson ONE: real personal electric flight, but not a car
The Jetson ONE is a single-seat, open-cockpit electric aircraft. It has eight electric motors, and Jetson lists redundant propulsion, emergency-landing functions, a ballistic parachute, and radar-assisted landing features. The company gives an approximately 20-minute flight time, a software-limited top speed of 102 km/h, a maximum pilot weight of 95 kg, and a 1,500-foot AGL service ceiling. These are figures from the manufacturer’s product page.

But the ONE does not drive on roads, carries only one person, and has short endurance compared with an ordinary trip by car. It is best understood as a personal eVTOL, not a flying automobile or autonomous air taxi. Buyers still need to meet applicable pilot, training, weather, and airspace requirements; assisted features do not mean the aircraft is approved to carry passengers without a pilot.

7. ASKA A5: hybrid VTOL with a difficult road-and-air certification path
ASKA describes the A5 as a four-seat hybrid-electric VTOL aircraft designed to be boarded like a car and used in road and flight modes. The company says its prototype holds an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate for unmanned experimental research and development, and says it is pursuing full certification. See ASKA’s current company information.
The authorization described by ASKA is limited to experimental R&D; it does not establish approval to carry customers. Nor does a design intended for road use prove that the A5 is currently street-legal in the United States. A hybrid powertrain also means it is not a pure battery EV. A vehicle that must satisfy both road and aviation requirements faces a more complicated approval path than a conventional car or a single-purpose aircraft.

XPENG AEROHT’s Land Aircraft Carrier takes a modular approach: an electric road vehicle transports a detachable electric flying module. Rather than making one machine serve as both car and aircraft, the system separates those roles. That may make the basic engineering and everyday ground use more practical, but it also means the flying component is a separate aircraft with its own operating requirements.
XPENG reported more than 3,000 pre-orders or advance reservations and announced a plan to begin deliveries in 2026, alongside dedicated manufacturing plans. Those are company-reported reservations and intentions, not evidence by themselves that deliveries had been completed by August 16, 2026. Its company announcement and system overview describe the concept and plans. Chinese market progress does not automatically establish U.S. FAA approval, road legality, or importability.

What “actually real” should mean before you count on one
These vehicles occupy different rungs on a reality ladder:
- Physical prototype: A machine exists, but it may not have flown or been road-tested.
- Flown or road-tested: A specific configuration has completed a test under particular conditions. That does not prove repeatable production or safe routine operation.
- Authorized for testing: A regulator may permit limited experimental activity. This is not the same as type certification or passenger-service approval.
- Orderable: A manufacturer may accept orders, deposits, or reservations. These terms are not interchangeable, and none guarantees delivery.
- Production planned: A factory or target date signals intent, not completed manufacturing.
- Customer-deliverable: A product can actually be delivered and legally operated by a customer in a defined market. That is the standard most readers mean by “available,” and several entries here have not reached it.
It is also important not to use “electric” as a blanket description. The PAL-V Liberty and established AirCar configuration use combustion power; the Switchblade is developing a hybrid-electric system; the ASKA A5 is hybrid-electric. Alef, Doroni, Jetson, and XPENG describe electric designs or modules. Powertrain labels do not tell you whether a vehicle has certification, range, or customer availability.
Can you take one from a driveway and fly over traffic?
Not on the evidence here. The PAL-V, Switchblade, and AirCar are airplane- or gyroplane-style roadable aircraft and need suitable aviation facilities. Alef, Doroni, Jetson, and ASKA are designed around vertical flight, but VTOL capability alone does not permit operation from any driveway, road, or rooftop. The XPENG system’s aircraft module separates from its road vehicle and operates as an aircraft.
Most of these are not autonomous passenger vehicles. Owners should expect some combination of pilot certification, aircraft-specific training, medical eligibility, airspace knowledge, weather judgment, preflight checks, and emergency procedures. The exact requirements depend on the aircraft category and country. Likewise, approval in one jurisdiction—such as road approval in Europe or a limited U.S. experimental authorization—does not transfer automatically to another or cover both road and flight operations.
The practical trade-offs behind the spectacle
- Runway versus VTOL: Fixed-wing aircraft are generally tied to suitable takeoff and landing areas. Vertical lift can reduce runway dependence, but adds energy demand, complexity, noise, and landing-site restrictions.
- Range and payload: Battery mass, passengers, wind, weather, and required reserves affect usable flight distance. A manufacturer’s headline range is not a guarantee for every route or condition.
- Ownership cost: Purchase price is only part of the budget. Training, hangar or storage, insurance, maintenance, fuel or charging, registration, airport fees, and import or certification costs can all matter.
- Certification: A flight-test authorization, type certification, production approval, commercial passenger approval, road registration, and local permission are different milestones.
- Everyday utility: Aircraft can avoid road congestion, but introduce airspace coordination, weather cancellations, noise, operating costs, and new safety risks. They do not eliminate transportation infrastructure.
The headline price currently visible in this dossier is PAL-V’s expected European figure: €299,000 before taxes and works for the standard Liberty and €499,000 for the Sport Edition. Prices for other entries are not stated here as verified current retail prices. A reservation or pre-order should not be treated as a binding purchase contract or a delivery guarantee.
