The best React table library depends on whether you want to build the interface yourself or adopt a ready-made grid. Choose TanStack Table for maximum rendering control, AG Grid for a feature-rich configurable grid, MUI X Data Grid for a Material UI application, or Handsontable for spreadsheet-like editing. The other choices are strongest when accessibility primitives or an existing UI kit are the deciding factor.

These libraries are not interchangeable. A headless library provides table logic but leaves the interface to your team; a component library supplies more of that interface, with corresponding opinions about styling and interaction. The comparison below focuses on what the available project documentation establishes, rather than claiming a universal performance winner.

How to choose a React table library

Start with the shape of the interface you need, not the length of a feature checklist. A read-only data table, an editable spreadsheet-like workspace, and an enterprise grid have different interaction and implementation demands.

  • Choose headless when your team needs control over markup, styling, and how table behavior fits into a custom design system. Budget time to build the UI.
  • Choose a prebuilt grid or UI-kit component when you want more of the interface and common interactions supplied by the library. Check that its design and feature model fit your application.
  • Choose around the existing stack if the project already standardizes on Material UI, Mantine, or React Suite; a matching table package may reduce integration work.
  • Choose spreadsheet-oriented editing deliberately. Editing cells, validating values, formulas, and moving data through spreadsheet formats are different requirements from sorting a read-only table.
  • Test large-data behavior with your own workload. The documentation describes virtualization in some products, but the material available here does not provide a comparable independent benchmark across all eight.

Sorting, filtering, pagination, and selection are common decision points, but their presence alone does not tell you how much UI you must build, what is included in a particular edition, or how the behavior works with your application. Confirm the current package documentation and licensing terms before committing.

At a glance: the eight options

Library Rendering model and best fit What the documentation establishes Important qualification
TanStack Table Headless; custom interfaces and styling Table state and logic such as sorting, filtering, pagination, and selection; adapters for React and other frameworks You supply the markup and styles; it is not a prebuilt table component.
AG Grid Prebuilt, configurable data grid; advanced interactions Community and Enterprise editions; vendor describes virtualization for very large grids Validate the vendor’s scale claim with your own workload; Enterprise features have licensing implications.
MUI X Data Grid Prebuilt React grid for Material UI applications Community, Pro, and Premium packages; quick start lists @mui/material as a peer dependency Check which features belong to which current package before selecting a tier.
Handsontable Spreadsheet-like, editable data grid Documentation covers editing, validators, formulas, virtualization, sorting, filtering, and Excel/CSV workflows Choose it for data-oriented editing needs; verify the license and features for your use.
React Aria Table Composable accessible table behavior Directional keyboard navigation, optional selection and sorting, and examples including asynchronous and infinite-scroll loading It emphasizes interaction primitives rather than a turnkey visual grid.
Material React Table Material UI-oriented table package Designed for applications using Material UI Confirm current feature and version details in the project documentation.
Mantine React Table Mantine-oriented table package Candidate for applications standardized on Mantine components and styling Compare current features and maintenance status with a TanStack implementation.
React Suite Table Table component within the React Suite library Fits applications already using React Suite Assess it as part of that component ecosystem, rather than as a UI-neutral primitive.

“Not stated” is intentional where the available product descriptions do not establish a feature boundary or comparable figure. The table is a fit guide, not a claim that every option has identical capabilities or licensing.

The eight libraries, in detail

1. TanStack Table: best when you want control

TanStack Table is headless: it supplies table logic and state while your application owns the HTML, styles, and presentation. Its documented capabilities include sorting, filtering, pagination, and selection. Official adapters include React as well as Vue, Solid, Svelte, Angular, and others, so its logic is not limited to React projects.

This separation is useful when a table must follow a bespoke design system or when you want to decide exactly how controls and rows render. The trade-off is real engineering work: you are not installing a finished grid and receiving its full interface for free. TanStack’s documentation explicitly distinguishes it from a prebuilt component such as AG Grid. Choose it if that flexibility is worth implementing and maintaining the presentation layer.

2. AG Grid: best for a feature-rich configurable grid

AG Grid is intended for advanced interactions and large datasets, with a grid interface rather than a headless rendering model. Its documentation distinguishes a free Community edition from Enterprise licensing. Check the edition comparison against the exact features your application needs; do not assume a feature shown in product documentation is included in the edition you plan to use.

AG Grid makes a vendor claim that virtualization can handle millions of rows and thousands of columns. Treat that as a product claim, not an independent guarantee of your application’s performance. Data shape, rendering requirements, network behavior, and the interactions you enable all matter; benchmark with representative data before relying on a scale target.

3. MUI X Data Grid: best for Material UI projects

MUI X Data Grid is a natural candidate if your application already uses Material UI and you want a React-first grid that belongs in that ecosystem. The quick-start documentation lists Community, Pro, and Premium packages and identifies @mui/material as a peer dependency. Account for that dependency in your package setup.

Because the product is divided into packages, compare the current feature and licensing details for the specific capability you need before choosing a tier. The available information establishes the package names, not a complete feature-by-feature boundary or price list.

4. Handsontable: best for spreadsheet-like editing

Handsontable is a JavaScript data-grid component with React support. Its documentation describes editable, data-oriented interfaces and examples such as inventory, reporting, ERP, and data management. It covers operations on rows and columns, sorting, filtering, virtualization, editors, validators, formulas, and Excel/CSV workflows.

That makes it the most spreadsheet-oriented option in this group. If users need to work directly with cell values, validation rules, formulas, or spreadsheet import and export flows, evaluate those interactions early. If the requirement is simply to display records and let users sort them, its editing model may be more than you need. Confirm current licensing and usage terms directly in the product documentation.

5. React Aria Table: best when accessible interaction primitives matter

React Aria Table focuses on table behavior and composable React primitives. Its documentation describes directional keyboard navigation, optional row selection and sorting, and examples for dynamic collections, column visibility, nested rows, asynchronous loading, and infinite-scroll loading hooks.

It is a strong fit when accessible interaction patterns are central to the project and the team wants to compose the interface. Evaluate how its primitives fit your visual design and implementation plan; the available description does not establish it as a ready-made styled enterprise grid.

6. Material React Table: a Material UI-oriented choice

Material React Table is aimed at teams already using Material UI who want a table experience aligned with that design system. It can be a more direct fit than starting with neutral primitives when the application already uses Material UI components and styling.

Before adopting it, verify the current supported version, features, and compatibility in its project documentation. The available information identifies its ecosystem fit but does not establish current feature-by-feature details or maintenance status.

7. Mantine React Table: a Mantine-oriented choice

Mantine React Table is intended for applications standardized on Mantine components and styling. If Mantine is already the application’s UI foundation, compare it with building a table from TanStack Table to see whether its integration saves enough work without constraining required behavior.

Check current project documentation for feature coverage and maintenance status before making a long-term dependency choice; those details are not established here.

8. React Suite Table: best for React Suite applications

React Suite includes a Table component as part of its React component library. It is a cohesive option when an application already uses React Suite and the team would rather use a matching component than assemble a grid from lower-level primitives.

Evaluate its current API and the features required by your table in the React Suite documentation. Its ecosystem fit is the key selection point established here; a detailed feature comparison against the other libraries is not available.

Which library should you choose for your case?

  • Custom visual design, maximum markup control: start with TanStack Table and plan the UI work explicitly.
  • Advanced ready-made grid interactions: evaluate AG Grid, then verify whether Community or Enterprise covers the required features.
  • Material UI is already your design system: compare MUI X Data Grid with Material React Table; inspect package tiers and current project documentation.
  • Mantine or React Suite is already established: evaluate the corresponding Mantine React Table or React Suite Table before introducing a separate visual system.
  • Spreadsheet-style cell editing and data workflows: evaluate Handsontable against your actual editor, validation, formula, and import/export requirements.
  • Composable accessible table interactions: consider React Aria Table and assess how its primitives fit the complete UI you need to build.
  • Very large datasets: compare practical behavior in a representative app. AG Grid’s virtualization statement is a vendor claim, and the available material does not establish a cross-library performance ranking.

Plan implementation around the real requirements

Before adding a dependency, write down the interactions the first release truly needs: sorting, filtering, pagination, selection, editing, keyboard navigation, asynchronous loading, or infinite scroll. Then confirm that the chosen library supports the required behavior in the package and edition you intend to use. A feature name in a general product description is not enough to establish that it is available in every edition.

For headless versus prebuilt choices, make the UI ownership explicit. With TanStack Table or React Aria’s composable approach, decide who implements and tests the visual controls and states. With a ready-made grid or UI-kit component, check whether its interface fits your design system and whether customization is practical for your team.

For large or changing datasets, test realistic row and column counts, representative cell content, and the interactions your users will perform. Virtualization can affect what is rendered at once, but it does not by itself answer questions about data fetching, application memory, or the behavior of your particular screen. No independent benchmark is established here, so a project-specific test is the sound basis for a performance decision.

Check how the finished table looks in the browser

A table that behaves correctly can still have clipped columns, unexpected wrapping, or overlays that obscure the result at a target viewport. Capture representative pages at the screen sizes and states that matter to your team, then inspect the output as a visual check alongside functional and accessibility testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one of these libraries automatically make every table accessible?

The available descriptions identify accessibility-related behavior in React Aria Table, including directional keyboard navigation, but they do not establish that any library makes every application-specific table accessible without implementation and testing.

Do these options have comparable published performance results?

No comparable independent performance figures are established here. The AG Grid scale statement is a vendor claim; test libraries with representative data and interactions in your own application.
