7-Zip 25.00 let Windows compression jobs use more than 64 logical processors by distributing worker threads across processor groups. The change applies to compression for 7z, ZIP and XZ archives, plus 7-Zip’s built-in benchmark; it does not promise that every job will use every processor or run proportionally faster. Version 25.00 was released July 5, 2025. It is no longer current: the official download page lists 7-Zip 26.02, dated June 25, 2026.

What changed in 7-Zip 25.00?

The release added Windows support for using more than 64 CPU threads when compressing to 7z, ZIP and XZ archives, and when running the 7-Zip benchmark. On systems with multiple processor groups, 7-Zip can distribute its worker threads across those groups. The change addresses how the application uses Windows processors; it does not add a new archive format. See the official 7-Zip release history.

The release notes also report BZip2 compression speeds 15–40% higher and Deflate speeds 1–3% higher. These are claims in the 25.00 release notes, not guaranteed gains for every file or an independent test result. The release also improved ZIP, CPIO and FAT archive support and included bug and vulnerability fixes.

Why did Windows have a 64-thread boundary?

Windows can run on systems with more than 64 logical processors, but it organizes processors into groups of up to 64. An application that only works within one group may not use processors in other groups. To scale beyond that boundary, software must account for the group arrangement. 7-Zip 25.00 added that support for the compression paths named in its release notes.

A logical processor is what Windows schedules work on; it is not always a separate physical core. Simultaneous multithreading can expose two logical processors per physical core. So a system with 64 physical cores might expose 128 logical processors, while another system’s counts and layout may differ.

As a simplified illustration, a 32- or 64-logical-processor machine fits within one group; a 96-logical-processor machine commonly uses two groups, and a 128-logical-processor machine commonly uses two groups of 64. Actual grouping depends on system topology and Windows behavior. Microsoft says Windows attempts to preserve physical locality when assigning processors to groups. Its processor-groups documentation also explains that support for more than 64 logical processors is available on supported 64-bit Windows versions, not 32-bit Windows.

Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 changed the default affinity behavior so processes and threads can span multiple groups by default. That operating-system capability does not make every application automatically parallel or guarantee that it will scale well; applications still need appropriate thread and affinity handling.

Who is likely to benefit?

The feature is aimed mainly at Windows systems with more than 64 logical processors: high-end workstations, dual-socket servers, large virtualization hosts and other machines used for parallel, compression-heavy work. Owners of Threadripper Pro, EPYC or Xeon systems should check the machine’s actual logical-processor count rather than infer it from the processor family.

Most consumer laptops and desktops have fewer than 64 logical processors, so this particular change is unlikely to make a noticeable difference on them. They may still benefit from other changes in newer 7-Zip releases.

What the change does—and does not—cover

  • Covered by the 25.00 announcement: Windows compression to 7z, ZIP and XZ, and the 7-Zip benchmark.
  • Not established by that announcement: equivalent multi-group scaling for every archive format, extraction path or other file-management operation. Do not assume that extracting an archive gets the same benefit as creating one.
  • Not guaranteed: use of every logical processor or a fixed speedup. Results depend on the format, method, compression level, dictionary size, data, selected thread count, memory capacity and bandwidth, storage speed, and how much of the work can run in parallel.

More threads target throughput, not necessarily a smaller archive. They can increase memory use and power consumption, compete with other work, and encounter diminishing returns. A job may instead be limited by disk I/O, memory bandwidth or a less-parallel stage. Doubling the thread count does not mean doubling the compression speed.

How to check and test the feature

1. Check the logical-processor count

In Task Manager, open Performance, select CPU, and read Logical processors. Or run this in PowerShell:

Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem | Select-Object NumberOfLogicalProcessors

For processor details, run:

Get-CimInstance Win32_Processor | Select-Object Name, NumberOfCores, NumberOfLogicalProcessors

These counts help identify whether the machine is above the 64-logical-processor boundary; they do not by themselves describe all processor-group or NUMA details.

2. Check the thread setting

In the graphical interface, select files or folders and choose Add to archive. Set the format and compression level, then inspect Number of CPU threads if that control is available. Compare the default with a fixed count. The displayed controls can vary by release and build.

3. Run the built-in benchmark

From a command prompt in the folder containing the 7-Zip command-line executable, run:

7z b

You can compare selected counts with commands such as 7z b -mmt=32, 7z b -mmt=64 and 7z b -mmt=128. Check the installed build’s help output with 7z -h if syntax or accepted values differ. The benchmark can help show how the program behaves at different thread counts, but it is not a substitute for testing your own files.

For XZ, use a suitable input and confirm the installed version’s supported syntax. Compare like with like: use the same data, compression settings and thread counts, and record elapsed time, output size, memory use, CPU utilization and storage activity. Include both data that compresses readily and data that is already compressed if those resemble your workload. Do not treat benchmark results as a promise of production performance.

Which 7-Zip version should you install?

Use the latest official release rather than installing 25.00 solely for its multi-group feature. As of August 18, 2026, the official download page lists 7-Zip 26.02, dated June 25, 2026. Version 25.01 followed 25.00 on August 3, 2025, and changed symbolic-link handling during extraction; its release notes describe -snld20 as a way to bypass the default checks when creating symbolic links. That is one reason not to treat 25.00 as the current security baseline.

The official Windows download page offers x64, x86 and ARM64 EXE installers, MSI packages and standalone archive packages. For most modern Intel and AMD Windows PCs, choose x64; choose ARM64 for Windows-on-Arm hardware and x86 only for a legacy 32-bit Windows environment. The site recommends the EXE installer over MSI; MSI can suit organizations that require that deployment format.

Is another archiver a better fit?

7-Zip is free and suited to local compression and command-line automation. Other tools may fit different needs, but the available information does not establish that they scale beyond 64 Windows processor threads or outperform 7-Zip on a given workload.

Tool Potential fit What to verify
7-Zip Free archiving, command-line automation and 7z, ZIP or XZ compression. Use the current release and test the formats and data you actually archive. Official download.
WinRAR Users who need RAR creation, recovery records or a commercial support model. Check the vendor’s current licensing and support details. Official site.
WinZip Users prioritizing a graphical suite with business, cloud or file-management workflows. Check current edition, subscription and deployment details. Official site.
PeaZip Users seeking a free, open-source, cross-platform archive manager with a GUI-oriented feature set. Check supported formats and workflow needs. Official site.
NanaZip Windows users who value a modern interface and closer Windows shell integration. It is based on 7-Zip technology, but do not assume its release timing or behavior matches every upstream 7-Zip release. Project page.

Windows’ built-in ZIP support may be sufficient for basic ZIP tasks, but it is not a like-for-like option for all formats and workflows. No tool should be selected on an unverified claim of high-core-count speed: benchmark the specific operation and dataset you need.
