If Instagram videos won’t play on your iPhone, first check whether the problem affects every video and whether switching between Wi-Fi and cellular changes anything. The cause may be a network restriction, an Instagram app issue, a single unavailable post, or a wider iPhone problem—not necessarily iOS 26 itself. Try these fixes in order, testing a few unrelated Reels, Stories, or feed videos after each one.
Quick diagnosis: Is it one video, Instagram, or your iPhone?
Before changing settings, open several unrelated videos. Note whether Instagram shows a spinner, a black screen, a frozen first frame, audio without a picture, or crashes. Then check:
- Do Instagram photos load, even if videos do not?
- Do Reels, Stories, and feed videos all fail, or only one type or one creator’s post?
- Does a video play on Wi-Fi, cellular data, or neither?
- Can Safari or another app stream video?
- Does the same Instagram account work on another device?
If only one post fails, it may have been deleted, restricted, or uploaded incorrectly. Test other posts before troubleshooting the iPhone. If Instagram fails on every network but other apps work, focus on Instagram. If other streaming apps fail too, investigate the network or iPhone.

Try an Instagram video on Wi-Fi, then turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and try cellular data. If cellular does not work, test another Wi-Fi network or a personal hotspot. Apple recommends testing another network when an app’s internet connection may be the problem (Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance).
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Works on Wi-Fi but not cellular: Check Instagram’s cellular permission, data mode, carrier coverage, and any data limit.
- Works on cellular but not Wi-Fi: The router, network filtering, DNS, or VPN may be involved. Try another Wi-Fi network and, if appropriate, restart your router.
- Fails on both: Continue with the app and iPhone checks below.
A full Wi-Fi icon does not guarantee internet access. School, work, hotel, or public networks can also restrict video. If you use a VPN or security app, it may interfere with connectivity; test without it only if you can do so safely and within any work or school rules. Apple recommends temporarily uninstalling VPN or security software when diagnosing Wi-Fi problems, but do not leave protections disabled if that creates a risk (Apple support).
2. Allow cellular data and check Low Data Mode
If videos play on Wi-Fi but not cellular, make sure Instagram is allowed to use mobile data. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) and enable Instagram in the app list.
As a temporary test, review data-saving settings:
- Cellular: Open Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Cellular Data Options → Data Mode, if that option appears, and check whether Low Data Mode is on.
- Wi-Fi: Open Settings → Wi-Fi, tap the information button beside the connected network, and review Low Data Mode.
Apple says Low Data Mode restricts background network activity and can reduce streaming quality or delay downloads. Turn it off briefly to test playback, then turn it back on if it makes no difference or you need to conserve data (Apple’s Low Data Mode guide). It is a possible factor, not a guaranteed cause. You can also test with Low Power Mode off at Settings → Battery, but this is a secondary check.

3. Force-close Instagram and reopen it
Closing and reopening the app can clear a stalled playback session. Apple recommends this for an app that is unresponsive, but cautions that force-closing apps unnecessarily can make them take longer to reload (Apple app troubleshooting; force-close guidance).
- iPhone with Face ID: Swipe up from the bottom edge and pause. Find Instagram, then swipe up on its preview. Reopen Instagram from the Home Screen or App Library.
- iPhone with a Home button: Double-click the Home button, find Instagram, swipe up on its preview, then reopen the app.
If the video still will not play, this step has ruled out only a temporary app hang; it cannot restore a disabled data permission, fix an outage, or make an unavailable post playable.
4. Restart your iPhone
A normal restart can clear temporary system or networking states without deleting your data. Restart the iPhone using Apple’s instructions for your model (Apple app troubleshooting). Use a force restart only if the whole iPhone is frozen or will not respond; its button sequence varies by model.

5. Update Instagram and iOS
An update may address an app or system compatibility problem, though it is not a guaranteed fix. Apple recommends checking for app updates and then iPhone software updates if the app still misbehaves (Apple app troubleshooting).

- Open Settings → General → Software Update to check for an iOS update. Follow Apple’s instructions, including its backup, battery, and connection recommendations, before installing.
Do not assume iOS 26 caused the problem just because it started after an update. Menu names and locations can vary slightly by iOS point release, language, and region. If Instagram is already current, an iOS update may still help with system compatibility, but it may not resolve an Instagram-side defect.
6. Delete and reinstall Instagram
Reinstalling is more disruptive than restarting, but it can replace damaged app files and remove stale local playback data. Apple recommends deleting and redownloading an app that continues to malfunction, while warning that app-stored data may be lost (Apple app troubleshooting).

- Touch and hold the Instagram icon, choose the option to remove or delete the app, and confirm.
- Download Instagram again from the App Store, sign in, and test several videos.
Before deleting it, make sure you know your login details and have saved anything important. Reinstalling may remove local app data, cached media, login state, and drafts or other unsynchronized content. Do not assume Instagram drafts will be preserved. Reinstalling will not fix an outage, account restriction, network block, or deleted video.

Reset network settings only after the simpler checks, especially if multiple apps have connection problems. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings, then confirm. Apple says this removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings (Apple network troubleshooting; Apple reset guidance).

This does not erase your photos, apps, messages, or the whole iPhone, but you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi. You may also need to restore VPN or carrier settings. Do not use this reset for a single broken post, or on a managed work or school device without permission from its administrator.

If the problem remains, choose support based on what fails:
- Instagram alone fails: Report the problem through Instagram’s in-app help tools. Apple advises contacting the app developer if an App Store app continues not to work as expected (Apple guidance).
- Cellular fails across multiple apps or locations: Contact your carrier about coverage, an outage, or a data restriction.
- Other apps also cannot stream, on multiple networks: Contact Apple if the issue persists after network troubleshooting.
- Many users or devices show the same Instagram failure: It may be temporary service trouble. Wait and retry rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app; do not assume an outage without confirmation.
When reporting the issue, note your iPhone model, iOS version, Instagram version, whether you used Wi-Fi or cellular, whether other apps play video, and whether another account or device works. A screenshot or screen recording of an error can also help.
