The best WordPress backup plugin is the one that keeps an independent copy off your server and gives you a restore path you can actually use. For most sites, UpdraftPlus is the broadest free starting point; Jetpack VaultPress Backup is the clearest fit if you want managed, real-time cloud backups; and WPvivid or Duplicator are stronger choices when migration or staging matters. Your final choice should follow the storage destination, capture frequency, dashboard-outage recovery plan, and paid features you need.
No independent speed or restoration benchmark was available for this comparison, so labels such as “fastest” or “most reliable” would be misleading. Features, prices and plan limits can change; confirm them on the linked product pages before purchase.
Quick comparison
| Plugin or service | Backup and storage evidence | Restore, migration or staging | Paid-plan notes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UpdraftPlus | Manual or scheduled backups. Free listing names Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3 or compatible storage, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, DreamObjects, OpenStack Swift and email. | Restore selected components, including plugins, themes or database; migration is listed. | Premium adds incremental backups, multiple destinations, pre-update backups, database encryption, multisite, WP-CLI and additional storage such as OneDrive, Azure, Google Cloud, Backblaze B2, SFTP/SCP, pCloud, WebDAV and UpdraftVault. | A flexible general-purpose plugin, especially when you want to choose storage. |
| Jetpack VaultPress Backup | Real-time cloud backups, a 30-day archive and an activity log. | One-click restores are advertised; cloud access is useful if the WordPress dashboard is unavailable. | The product page displays $4.95/month for the first year, billed yearly, and $9.95/month thereafter for the backup plan. The introductory rate is limited to year one. | Owners who prefer a managed cloud service and continuous capture. |
| BackWPup | The official listing describes backup and restore and supports direct restore from supported cloud and server destinations. | Restore is documented at a high level; the returned listing does not establish a complete current matrix of destinations, retention or pricing. | Verify current tiers and limits on the plugin page. | Readers who want a conventional backup-and-restore plugin after checking its present destination support. |
| Duplicator | Free version stores backups locally and on Duplicator Cloud. Pro adds S3-compatible storage and providers including FTP/SFTP, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Cloudflare R2, Wasabi, Google Cloud Storage and Backblaze B2. | Its core workflow is built around packaged backups and migration; the cited listing establishes storage distinctions, not comparative restore performance. | Many cloud integrations require Pro. | Migration-heavy projects and sites that need broad cloud-provider coverage. |
| WPvivid | Manual or scheduled backups of the whole site, files or database; destinations include Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon S3, OneDrive, DigitalOcean Spaces, FTP and SFTP. | One-click restoration, migration and staging are listed. | Pro adds incremental backups, database-backup encryption, multisite backups and additional staging and restore functions. | Site owners who want backup, migration and staging in one interface. |
| BlogVault | Secondary 2026 comparisons describe it as an off-site managed backup service. | Those reports say its dashboard can support restoration when the WordPress dashboard is unavailable and includes staging. | Current official plan limits, retention and prices were not established here; verify them directly. | Readers considering a managed service with an external recovery dashboard. |
| Solid Backups — NextGen | An August 2026 comparison characterizes it as cloud-first. | Current official restore and staging details were not established in the available evidence. | Verify the product name, destinations, limits and plan requirements with the publisher. | Only after confirming that its current workflow matches your recovery requirements. |

How to choose a WordPress backup plugin
1. Check where the archive is stored
A plugin is not the same thing as storage. Local copies on the same hosting account can disappear with the site, account or server. Prefer a destination outside that failure domain, such as a separate cloud account, SFTP server or managed backup service. Confirm who owns the storage account, how access is authenticated and whether restores incur provider limits or fees.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Match capture frequency to how often the site changes
A brochure or rarely updated site may be adequately protected by a scheduled daily backup. Stores, membership sites and busy publishers can lose important orders or submissions between daily runs; real-time capture or incremental backups reduce that gap. “Real-time” and “incremental” are product capabilities, not guarantees that every request or third-party system is captured.
3. Plan for a broken dashboard
Ask how you will recover if WordPress cannot load. A one-click restore inside wp-admin is convenient but unavailable during a fatal error, compromised administrator account or hosting outage. Look for an external service dashboard, downloadable archives, documented manual restoration, or host-level snapshots you can access separately.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
4. Separate backup from migration and staging
Migration packages and staging copies are useful but do not automatically improve disaster recovery. Check whether staging pushes database changes safely, whether uploads are included, and whether the feature is free or Pro. WPvivid and Duplicator are particularly relevant when moving or testing sites; UpdraftPlus and Jetpack can still be better choices when those extras are not required.
5. Audit paid-only requirements
Write down the capabilities you actually need—additional destinations, encryption, multisite, incremental schedules, pre-update copies, staging or WP-CLI—then compare them with the free tier. UpdraftPlus, WPvivid and Duplicator all reserve meaningful capabilities or integrations for paid plans.

Plugin-by-plugin guidance
UpdraftPlus: broad storage choice and component restores
The WordPress.org listing reports more than 3 million active installations, a directory figure rather than an independent reliability measurement. Its free tier covers scheduled or manual backups and selective restoration, while Premium expands destinations and operational controls. Choose it when you want to keep control of where archives live and are comfortable configuring that storage yourself.
Jetpack VaultPress Backup: managed real-time cloud copies
Jetpack advertises real-time backups, one-click restores, a 30-day archive and an activity log. Its page currently shows $4.95 per month for the first year when billed yearly, then $9.95 per month at the regular rate; prices can change. Jetpack also says, “VaultPress Backup is the most proven WordPress backup plugin with 269 million site backups over the last ten years.” That sentence and figure are Jetpack’s own vendor claim, not an independently audited statistic.

BackWPup: verify the current matrix before committing
BackWPup’s official listing confirms backup and restore and says direct restore is available from supported cloud and server destinations. The available listing excerpt does not establish a complete current destination list, retention policy or price, so check those details against your site’s recovery plan before selecting it.

Duplicator: packaging, migration and cloud integrations
Duplicator’s free storage distinction is clear: local archives and Duplicator Cloud. Pro is the tier to examine if you need S3-compatible storage or named services such as Cloudflare R2, Wasabi, Google Cloud Storage or Backblaze B2. Treat its packaging and migration tools as workflow features; the listing does not prove faster or more reliable restores than other plugins.
Best Value
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
WPvivid: backup plus staging in one workflow
WPvivid supports manual and scheduled jobs, whole-site, file-only or database-only backups, one-click restoration, migration and staging. Pro is required for incremental backups, database-backup encryption, multisite and additional staging and restore functions. It is a practical shortlist when testing changes and moving sites are as important as disaster recovery.
BlogVault: managed recovery, but confirm current terms
Secondary comparison coverage describes BlogVault as an off-site service with a dashboard that can help restore a site when wp-admin is unavailable, plus managed staging. Because current official feature and plan evidence was not available here, verify retention, restore procedure, staging limits and pricing directly with BlogVault before relying on it.
Solid Backups — NextGen: cloud-first description needs verification
An August 2026 comparison calls Solid Backups — NextGen cloud-first, but current official documentation for destinations, restores, product naming and plan requirements was not established. Do not assign it a specific advantage until those details are confirmed.
A safer rollout checklist
- Ask your host what snapshots exist, where they are stored and how to restore them. Host backups are a separate protection layer, not proof that a plugin’s archives are usable.
- Connect an off-site destination owned or controlled by you, then create a complete backup.
- Download or otherwise access the archive outside WordPress and record its date, size and included components.
- Test restoration on a staging site or disposable installation before an emergency. Confirm files, database, media, passwords and cron-dependent functions.
- Set a schedule based on how quickly your content or transactions change, and monitor failed jobs rather than assuming scheduled jobs succeeded.
- Document an emergency path that does not depend solely on the production dashboard.
Which plugin should you choose?
- Choose UpdraftPlus if you want a configurable, widely used plugin with many storage choices and selective restores.
- Choose Jetpack VaultPress Backup if managed real-time cloud backups, an activity log and one-click restores justify a recurring service fee.
- Choose WPvivid if staging and migration belong in the same workflow as backups.
- Choose Duplicator if packaging sites for moves and connecting to several cloud providers are central requirements.
- Shortlist BackWPup, BlogVault or Solid Backups only after checking their current official destination, restore, retention and pricing details against your recovery plan.
Whichever tool you select, the meaningful test is a documented restore from an off-site copy—not the plugin’s installation count, marketing language or a scheduled job that has never been recovered.
