Can you sell online for free? Sometimes—but “free ecommerce platform” can mean very different things: free core software that still needs hosting, a $0 plan limited by country or payment provider, or a small free tier with a strict product cap. Current official information verifies only a few options here as free or potentially free for live selling; it does not support a trustworthy ranking of seven platforms that all let merchants sell at no cost.

This guide compares the options by what the evidence establishes, flags offers that should not be mistaken for free selling plans, and gives you a practical way to calculate the real cost before launching.

What counts as a free ecommerce platform?

A $0 platform fee is not the same as a $0 store. Selling may also involve payment processing, a domain, hosting, extensions, shipping and the time needed to maintain the store. A platform should count as a free selling option only if its free offer supports the checkout and order-taking workflow you need—and you qualify for it.

The options below are therefore grouped by the kind of “free” the official information supports, rather than forced into a seven-place ranking.

Free or potentially free options for selling

WooCommerce: free core software, with hosting and upkeep on you

WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress. Its core software is free and supports physical and digital goods, product variations, downloads and affiliate items. That does not make a complete store turnkey or cost-free: you still need to arrange hosting, and may choose to pay for a domain, extensions, support or maintenance. See the WooCommerce listing on WordPress.org and its pricing information.

It is the strongest fit for someone already using WordPress, or willing to handle technical setup and ongoing maintenance in exchange for control and flexibility. The trade-off is responsibility: the software does not bundle every operating expense or service into a $0 hosted plan.

Shift4Shop: $0 plan with U.S. and payment-provider conditions

Shift4Shop advertises an End-to-End plan at a $0 platform price, with unlimited products, bandwidth and staff users. The offer is limited to U.S. merchants and tied to using Shift4 Payments; payment processing remains a cost consideration. Check the Shift4Shop pricing page and its regional plan information for eligibility before building around the offer. The free plan is not a general promise that every merchant, in every country, can run a store without costs.

This may suit an eligible U.S. seller who is comfortable with the required payment ecosystem. A $0 platform price should not be read as $0 transaction costs.

Big Cartel Gold: free tier for a five-product shop

Big Cartel’s free Gold tier is aimed at a very small catalog. Its official help documentation says that if a shop with more than five products downgrades to Gold, it is placed in maintenance mode until the seller chooses which five products to keep. Read the vendor’s plan-change and downgrade guidance before changing plans.

That limit makes Gold a reasonable candidate for an artist or maker testing a handful of products, but not for a growing catalog that needs more than five listings.

Square Online: a free plan appears on the U.S. pricing page

Square’s U.S. online-store page lists a Free plan. That establishes the plan’s presence on that U.S. page, not a complete set of current feature limits or the payment costs and availability that apply to every location. Review Square’s U.S. online-store plans and confirm local availability, checkout features and processing charges before relying on it for a live store.

Square is worth considering if you want a Square-connected workflow and the plan’s current terms fit your location and needs. The available information does not establish that every part of operating a Square-powered store is free.

Options that should not be counted as verified free selling plans

Wix: experimenting with store features is not proof of free checkout

Wix says users can experiment with store features for free on its online-store page. That wording does not establish that the free tier can publish a checkout and accept orders. Check which current plan is required to sell before treating Wix as a free ecommerce platform.

Ecwid: check current pricing rather than relying on old free-plan claims

Ecwid’s current pricing page presents paid plans. Older free-tier claims should not be assumed to apply now; verify the live plan selector and terms for your region.

Why this is not a seven-platform ranking

The available official information does not verify seven distinct services that currently let a reader sell online for free. Adding services that offer only a free trial, a free brochure website, or free source code without accounting for required hosting would make the list look more complete while answering the question less accurately. PrestaShop and OpenCart, for example, need direct checks of their current official terms before they can be recommended as free selling options.

How to choose without being surprised by the bill

  1. Confirm live selling. Make sure the free option supports publishing products, checkout and order acceptance—not merely building or previewing a store.
  2. Check whether you qualify. Confirm country restrictions, required payment processors and any other conditions. This is especially important for Shift4Shop’s U.S.-only offer and Square’s U.S. plan page.
  3. Match the catalog limit to your needs. Big Cartel Gold’s documented limit is five products; consider how you will handle the plan if your catalog grows.
  4. Price the whole workflow. Add the platform fee, payment processing, hosting and domain costs where applicable, paid extensions, fulfillment and the work of keeping the store running.
  5. Consider control and portability. WooCommerce offers flexible, open-source software, but requires you to choose and maintain hosting and any extensions. A hosted plan may reduce setup work, while its eligibility rules or platform conditions can limit your options.
  6. Recheck the vendor’s current terms. Plans, included features, country availability and fees can change. Use the official pricing and help pages linked above rather than an older roundup.

If you ship physical products, shipping-label tools may be relevant to your workflow. A 4×6 thermal label printer is one possible accessory, but printer compatibility and whether you need one depend on your platform and fulfillment setup.
