If your iPhone battery started draining faster after installing iOS 26, first check Settings > Battery. Apple says update-related work can continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and temperature; if you see an “Ongoing iOS Update” Insight, wait a few days and check again. If the drain persists, Battery settings can help identify whether an app, weak cellular signal, screen use, or the battery itself is responsible.
Work through the tips below in order: measure the drain, find its source, make targeted changes, then consider resets or service. You do not need to disable every feature, and a percentage drop by itself does not prove the update damaged your battery.
First decide whether to wait or troubleshoot
Wait and monitor if the update was installed recently, your phone is otherwise working normally, and Battery settings show ongoing update activity. Apple notes that update tasks can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance, and recommends checking again after a few days. There is no fixed duration that applies to every iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshoot now if the drain is severe, continues while the phone is idle, or comes with repeated shutdowns or charging problems. Swelling, smoke, or extreme heat calls for prompt service, not more battery-setting experiments.

Apple’s battery guidance for iPhone covers post-update activity, Battery usage details, power settings, and Battery Health. Menu names and feature availability may vary by model, region, and iOS 26.x version.
Measure the drain before changing settings
- Wait a few days after a major update. Compare battery life under similar use after the initial post-update period. Apple says background update work may temporarily affect battery and thermal performance.
- Look for “Ongoing iOS Update.” Open Settings > Battery. If this Insight appears, it is evidence that update work is continuing—not proof of permanent damage.
- Give background setup a chance to finish. When convenient, leave the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi. This can allow setup, app updates, and synchronization to proceed, but it does not guarantee that all work will finish overnight.
- Restart once after setup settles. A normal restart may clear a process that became stuck during the update. It is not a guaranteed battery fix.
- Notice whether the phone stays warm while idle. Warmth during heavy use or background setup can be temporary. Persistent heat with the screen off and no charging deserves investigation.
- Compare with the previous seven days. In Settings > Battery, use Daily Usage to compare today with recent days instead of relying on memory.
- Run a controlled overnight check. Note the starting and ending battery percentages, keep the phone in the same location, and disconnect accessories you do not need. Repeat for two or three nights if there are no safety concerns.
- Separate screen-on drain from standby drain. Fast loss during navigation, gaming, video, or camera use has different likely causes from substantial loss while the phone is untouched.
Find the app or process using power
- Open the full Battery Usage view. Go to Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage. Review app and system activity alongside the usage graph.
- Tap the app at the top of the list. Check when it used power and whether its activity coincided with screen use, background activity, or notifications.
- Investigate “Background Activity.” This label means an app used power in the background. Reduce that app’s background permissions or temporarily remove it to test whether the pattern changes.
- Investigate “Notifications.” Frequent alerts can wake the display and processor. Reduce nonessential alerts from apps with unusually high activity.
- Look for “No Mobile Coverage” or “Low Signal.” Weak reception can make the phone work harder to maintain a connection. Compare results in a stronger-signal location, or use Airplane Mode when connectivity is not needed.
- Check Photos and cloud synchronization. Photo analysis, uploads, downloads, and account sync may increase activity after an update. Look for work that is progressing rather than repeatedly restarting.
- Review location-heavy apps. Navigation, fitness, weather, delivery, and ride-share apps may use location in the background. Check whether that access is needed.
- Check video and music streaming. Streaming over cellular—especially with a weak signal—uses both the radio and the display.
- Check games and camera use. Demanding games, long video recordings, and camera processing can cause rapid drain and warmth without indicating an iOS defect.
- Update your apps. Open the App Store and install pending updates. An app that has not been updated may behave poorly after a major iOS release.
- Force-close only an app that appears stuck or abnormal. Do not routinely swipe away every app. Close a specific app if Battery usage, a freeze, or a crash points to it.
- Temporarily remove a suspected app. Test one app at a time. Before uninstalling, confirm important data is backed up or synchronized.
- Reinstall only if needed. If the problem follows the app, reinstall it after checking that you know the account credentials and have synchronized the app’s data.
- Turn off unnecessary notifications. Use Settings > Notifications to reduce alerts that do not need to wake your phone.
- Restrict Background App Refresh selectively. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Turn it off for apps that do not need frequent updates; disabling it globally may delay useful content.
- Review Location Services. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Where appropriate, change apps from Always to While Using or Never.
- Remove widgets or Live Activities you do not use. These can prompt periodic updates. Remove only the ones that offer little value or appear connected to excess activity.
- Adjust Mail fetch for less important accounts. Frequent fetching can add background activity. Use an appropriate fetch interval, or push where it suits the account and your needs.
- Check work or school management software. VPNs, security tools, device-management profiles, and enterprise sync can run in the background. Do not remove a managed profile without approval from its administrator.
- Turn off Personal Hotspot when finished. A connected device transferring data can drain the iPhone quickly.
Check cellular, Wi-Fi, VPNs, and accessories
- Use Wi-Fi when practical. Apple says Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than cellular data, particularly when Wi-Fi is strong and cellular coverage is weak.
- Try 5G Auto on a supported iPhone. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > 5G Auto. Apple lists iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation) among supported models. Labels and availability can vary.
- Compare one night in Airplane Mode. If standby drain falls substantially, investigate cellular coverage, network activity, Wi-Fi, or connected accessories. Airplane Mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent fix.
- Limit cellular data for nonessential apps. In Settings > Cellular, turn off cellular access for apps that can wait until Wi-Fi is available.
- Test without an unreliable VPN. A VPN that repeatedly reconnects can create network activity. Do not disable a required business or security connection without authorization.
- Test with Bluetooth accessories disconnected. A tracker, keyboard, car system, or other accessory that repeatedly reconnects may be involved. Compare battery use without accessories before changing other settings.
- Stop hotspot sharing when you are done. Disconnect devices that no longer need the iPhone’s connection.
- Download content for offline use. Offline music, video, maps, or podcasts can avoid repeated cellular transfers where that is useful.
- Repeat tests in stronger coverage. Weak signal can make a healthy battery seem faulty. Compare like with like before drawing a conclusion.
Reduce screen and feature power use
- Enable Auto-Brightness. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. Apple identifies high brightness and disabled Auto-Brightness as possible battery-life contributors.
- Lower screen brightness. The display can be a major power user. Lower it temporarily to see whether screen use is driving the loss.
- Shorten Auto-Lock. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose a shorter interval if the screen often remains on while idle.
- Test with Always On Display off. On supported models, find the option under Settings > Display & Brightness and compare results.
- Use Low Power Mode for a targeted test. In iOS 26, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. Apple says it reduces or disables features including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. It turns off automatically after charging above 80 percent.
- Try Adaptive Power only if your model supports it. Apple lists iOS 26 or later on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Do not expect this option on every iPhone.
- Reduce motion if you prefer fewer visual effects. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion. Treat it as an optional adjustment, not a promised battery fix.
- Turn off keyboard haptics if you do not need them. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and disable Haptic to test.
- Review vibration settings. In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, disable vibration features you do not need.
- Reduce unnecessary lock-screen interruptions. Adjust notification previews and alerts to limit screen wake-ups where that suits you.
- Disable only features you do not use. You might turn off automatic downloads or unnecessary AirDrop discoverability. Do not disable core services indiscriminately; change one thing at a time so you can judge the result.
Check battery health and charging
- Check Battery Health. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
- Take a “Service” warning seriously. Apple says to consider battery replacement if Service appears next to Battery Health. Check service options for your model and region.
- Do not treat Maximum Capacity as a complete diagnosis. It is not a direct measure of today’s runtime. Apps, signal, temperature, display use, and software activity can still cause poor battery life.
- Review shutdown or performance messages. Unexpected shutdowns or battery service and peak-performance warnings are more meaningful evidence than a small day-to-day percentage change.
- Consider battery replacement history. A damaged, incorrectly installed, or nongenuine replacement battery can cause abnormal behavior or unreliable readings. Seek qualified diagnostics if the battery information or performance seems inconsistent.
- Keep the phone cool while charging. If it becomes hot, remove an insulating case, keep it out of direct sunlight, and avoid demanding games or video recording while charging.
- Test with a known-good cable and adapter. Use a reliable, compatible charger and cable. Intermittent or ineffective charging can look like rapid drain because the phone is not replenishing normally.
- Choose service over endless tweaks when evidence points to hardware. Persistent severe idle drain, shutdowns, a Service warning, swelling, or abnormal heat warrants professional diagnostics.
Escalate carefully if the drain continues
Before a reset or restore, back up the iPhone if possible. Install the latest iOS 26 update available for your model and update apps; do not assume a particular point release fixes battery drain unless Apple’s release notes say so. Apple maintains the iOS and iPadOS 26 release notes.

Force restart (does not erase data)
For most Face ID iPhones and iPhone 8 or later: press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. A force restart can clear a stuck process, but it is not a guaranteed battery fix.

When to contact Apple or seek urgent service
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Drain began just after updating and Battery shows ongoing update activity | Keep the phone powered and on Wi-Fi when convenient; monitor for a few days. |
| One app dominates usage | Update it, restrict its background, notification, or location access, then test or contact its developer. |
| “Low Signal” or “No Mobile Coverage” appears | Compare in stronger coverage, use Wi-Fi or 5G Auto where supported, and test Airplane Mode. |
| Battery Health shows Service | Arrange battery diagnostics or service; check coverage and options for your model and region. |
| Severe idle drain persists in Airplane Mode or the phone shuts down unexpectedly | Back up and seek Apple or authorized service diagnostics. |
| Swelling, smoke, odor, liquid damage, or extreme heat | Stop using and charging the iPhone and seek urgent professional service. Do not press on a swollen battery. |
Avoid factory-resetting before checking Battery usage, installing dubious “battery optimizer” apps, draining the battery to zero as a calibration ritual, or downgrading iOS with unofficial tools. Do not buy a new phone solely because battery life was temporarily worse after an update.
