Coolify, Dokploy, CapRover, Dokku and Easypanel are five practical ways to deploy applications on servers you control. The right choice depends less on a universal ranking than on how you package software, whether you need a dashboard, how many servers you operate, and how much infrastructure work you want to own.
These products are control and deployment software, not hosting itself. You still provide the VPS, dedicated server or home machine, then handle operating-system updates, network security, secrets, capacity, data protection and recovery.
Quick comparison
| Platform | Documented deployment model | Dashboard and Compose | Published installation notes | Best starting point for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coolify | Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Compose files, images, databases and service templates on one or more connected servers | Yes, according to Dokploy’s vendor-authored comparison table | Linux; 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB free disk minimum | Teams wanting a broad self-hosted control plane |
| Dokploy | Applications and services managed through its UI and Docker-based workflows | Yes, according to Dokploy’s own comparison table | At least 2 GB RAM and 30 GB disk; ports 80, 443 and 3000 available | Dashboard-led Compose, environments, backups and multi-server features |
| CapRover | Docker applications on a public server with wildcard DNS for the normal HTTPS setup | Use its own application workflow; Dokploy’s table marks native Compose as absent | AMD64 and ARM64 images; Ubuntu 24.04 and Docker 25+ are the tested stack | CapRover users who need ARM64 or AMD64 support |
| Dokku | git push, Dockerfiles or detected language buildpacks on one server |
CLI/API-oriented; Dokploy’s table marks no built-in UI | Single-server PaaS model | Developers who prefer Git and command-line deployment |
| Easypanel | Applications, Compose projects, databases and services through a Docker Swarm-based setup | UI and Compose-oriented documentation | Fresh Ubuntu server, at least 2 GB RAM, ports 80 and 443 | A scripted Ubuntu installation with Swarm initialized for you |
The feature comparison above should be read carefully: the dashboard, Compose and capability entries are from Dokploy’s own comparison table, not independent benchmarking.
What “self-hosted PaaS” actually means
A self-hosted platform installs a control layer on infrastructure you supply. It may build an image, create containers, route domains, issue certificates, run scheduled jobs or expose logs, but it does not make the underlying server disappear.

- Infrastructure: you pay for and size the VPS, bare-metal machine or home server.
- Operations: you configure SSH, firewalls, DNS, updates, monitoring and secrets.
- Data: you decide where databases, volumes and backups live and how restores are tested.
- Control plane: the platform dashboard or CLI needs its own upgrade and recovery plan.
Coolify states this division explicitly: it is “the control plane for your infrastructure” and is not a hosting provider for workload servers. Its documentation says standard Docker resources continue running if the Coolify control-plane instance is unavailable, but dashboard and automation control are lost until recovery.
Coolify
What it does
Coolify is an open-source, self-hostable control plane for applications, databases and services. Its documented resource types include Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Docker Compose files, container images, databases and one-click service templates. You can connect one server or multiple servers and place workloads where they belong.
Requirements and trade-offs
The current self-hosted installation guide lists a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB of free disk. It also lists 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS as supported. Those figures cover the platform, not every application, build and database you will run; simultaneous builds and multiple workloads need more capacity.
Self-hosted Coolify has no platform licence fee, but you operate the control plane and pay for servers. Coolify Cloud is a paid managed control plane; users still provide and secure workload servers. The documentation accessed for this article listed Cloud from $5 per month, including up to two connected servers, with $3 per additional server. Pricing can change, so confirm it before purchase.
Who should choose it
Start with Coolify when you want one interface for heterogeneous resources, expect to connect more than one server, or want the option of self-operating or outsourcing only the control-plane layer. Confirm backup, database and recovery details for your exact release before moving production data.
Dokploy
What it does
Dokploy’s own comparison matrix lists a UI, Docker Compose, databases, monitoring, backups, multi-server support, rollbacks, environments, scheduled jobs and preview deployments. These are vendor-authored feature claims, so verify the current documentation and plan limits for any capability you require.
Installation profile
Its installation guide recommends at least 2 GB of RAM and 30 GB of disk, with ports 80, 443 and 3000 available. The guide lists tested Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and CentOS versions and provides a one-command installer. The extra disk recommendation is important when Docker builds, images, logs and databases share a machine.

Who should choose it
Investigate Dokploy first if you want a dashboard-led Compose workflow plus built-in concepts such as environments, rollbacks or scheduled jobs. Treat its comparison table as a starting map, not proof of performance or operational quality.
CapRover
Workflow and networking
CapRover’s getting-started documentation describes a Docker installation on a public server, normally paired with a public IP and wildcard DNS. It can be used without a domain, but HTTPS is not available in that setup. Plan DNS before installation if you need public TLS and multiple application subdomains.
Architecture and memory
Published images target AMD64 and ARM64. The documented tested stack is Ubuntu 24.04 with Docker 25 or newer. CapRover warns that image builds can consume enough memory that 512 MB may be insufficient and suggests at least 1 GB as a practical provider baseline. Its single-node guide lists ports 80, 443, 443/UDP and 3000.
Who should choose it
Choose CapRover when its application workflow fits your team and you value documented support for both common server architectures. Size the machine for builds, not merely for the control software.

Dokku
Git-first deployment
Dokku describes itself as an extensible, open-source PaaS that runs on a single server. You deploy with git push; Dokku can build from a Dockerfile or detect a language and use buildpacks. It also routes web processes and manages background processes and scheduled tasks.
What you give up
The Git workflow is deliberately direct. Dokploy’s comparison matrix characterizes Dokku as CLI/API-oriented without a built-in UI. That is not a defect if your team already automates deployments, but it means you must design your own visibility, access controls and operational conventions rather than relying on a dashboard.
Who should choose it
Start with Dokku for a focused, single-server PaaS where a repository push is the primary release action. It is less suitable when your first requirement is a visual, multi-server control center.

The documentation navigation includes application, Compose, database and WordPress service guides. That makes it a reasonable starting point for readers who want a scripted Ubuntu setup and a UI around common Docker services.
Questions to verify
Check current licensing, support terms, backup behavior and security documentation directly before committing. An alternatives page surfaced in search but was not verifiable for claims about licensing, template counts, audits or comparative support, so those claims should not be used to choose the platform.
How to choose without guessing
1. Start with your packaging format
- Use Dokku when Git push plus a Dockerfile or buildpack is the desired release path.
- Investigate Coolify or Dokploy for a Compose-heavy or mixed-resource dashboard workflow.
- Consider CapRover when its Docker application model and ARM64/AMD64 images match your server.
- Consider Easypanel when a fresh Ubuntu and Docker Swarm script is attractive.
2. Count servers and failure domains
A single VPS is simpler but concentrates applications, builds, databases and the control plane. Multiple servers require clear placement, network rules, credentials and recovery procedures. Coolify documents a multi-server model; Dokploy’s matrix lists multi-server support. Confirm implementation details and limits in current docs.
3. Size for workloads
Published minimums are not production capacity guarantees. Add headroom for application containers, build jobs, databases, image layers, logs, monitoring and backups. A machine that satisfies a 2 GB platform minimum may still fail a memory-heavy build.
4. Design backups before deployment
Back up application data, database dumps, persistent volumes and the control-plane configuration to a destination outside the host. Test restoration, including DNS, secrets and certificates. A feature matrix saying “backups” does not replace a tested restore plan; Coolify explicitly leaves data-backup responsibility with the operator.
5. Treat security as part of the product
- Restrict SSH and dashboard access and use key-based administration.
- Open only required ports and keep the operating system and Docker components patched.
- Store secrets outside repositories and rotate them when access changes.
- Monitor disk, memory, CPU, certificate expiry and failed deployments.
- Document how to rebuild the server if the control plane or host is lost.
Common failure modes
Installation refuses to start
Check the distribution and version against the platform’s tested list, confirm required ports are free, and verify that the server is genuinely fresh where the guide requires it. Do not blindly rerun an installer over an existing Docker or Swarm configuration.

Builds run out of memory
Increase RAM or move builds to a separate worker, reduce parallel builds and remove unused images and caches. CapRover’s documentation specifically warns that 512 MB may be insufficient; the same principle applies to every platform.
HTTPS or domains fail
Confirm DNS records point to the public IP, wildcard records exist where required, ports 80 and 443 are reachable, and no other reverse proxy is claiming them. CapRover’s no-domain mode does not provide HTTPS.

Containers work but data disappears
Inspect volume mappings and database persistence before deploying. Backups must include volumes and database contents, not only image definitions. Perform a restore onto a separate host before declaring the system recoverable.
The dashboard is unavailable
Check the control-plane service, disk space, firewall and host health without assuming workloads are also down. In Coolify’s documented model, standard Docker resources can continue while dashboard control is unavailable; recovery still matters because automation and visibility are lost.
Capture deployment previews without building a browser pipeline
When you need a screenshot of a staging URL for a release record, visual review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Or skip the browser setup
Use one request instead of maintaining Playwright or Chromium infrastructure. The API supports full-page shots, CSS-selector elements, device presets, custom waits, headers, cookies, JavaScript, blocking rules, PDFs and asynchronous jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can these platforms run on a home server?
Yes, where the platform supports your operating system and architecture, but you still need reliable power, networking, DNS, storage, updates and an off-machine backup. Coolify documents 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS support, and CapRover documents ARM64 images; neither fact guarantees capacity for a particular workload.
Which platform has the lowest resource requirement?
The published minimums are not directly comparable guarantees. Coolify lists 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB disk; Dokploy lists 2 GB RAM and 30 GB disk; Easypanel lists 2 GB RAM; CapRover warns that 512 MB may not handle builds.
Should I put databases on the same server?
You can, but co-locating databases with builds and application containers increases contention and concentrates failure. Use persistent volumes, tested backups and sufficient disk and memory, or place data services on a separately managed host.
