For a quick, general DNS lookup, start with Google Admin Toolbox Dig. Use dns.google or Dig Web Interface when you want a browser-based query to a public resolver, MxToolbox when you need broader mail or DNS-health checks, and DNSViz when you need to understand DNSSEC. The right tool depends on what question you’re asking: a DNS answer from one resolver is not the same as proof that a change is visible everywhere.

Which online DNS lookup tool should you use?

There is no documented benchmark establishing one of these services as universally fastest or most accurate. Choose by the kind of answer or diagnosis you need:

  • One straightforward lookup: Google Admin Toolbox Dig.
  • A public-resolver answer in a browser: dns.google.
  • More control over a browser-based dig-style query: Dig Web Interface.
  • Mail records and wider DNS checks: MxToolbox DNS Lookup.
  • DNSSEC chain visualization and troubleshooting: DNSViz.

These recommendations reflect each tool’s documented purpose, not a comparative speed or accuracy test. If you manage Google Workspace, Google Check MX is a useful specialist alternative for checking common MX problems and name-server reachability.

Compare the five tools

Tool Best fit What its documented capabilities establish
Google Admin Toolbox Dig General-purpose first lookup Google describes a simple browser front end to the dig utility. Enter a domain; the page appends a trailing dot automatically.
dns.google Public-resolver queries in a browser Cloudflare describes it as a web-based way to get DNS responses for specific queries, similar to Dig Web Interface.
Dig Web Interface Browser-based query control Cloudflare describes it as an online lookup based on the command-line dig interface, avoiding the need to construct terminal parameters.
MxToolbox DNS Lookup Mail and broader DNS checks MxToolbox says its lookup lists a domain’s DNS records in priority order and queries the authoritative name server. Its default hostname lookup returns an IP address; its wider catalog includes MX, A, AAAA, PTR, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, SRV, DNSSEC-related records and propagation checks.
DNSViz DNSSEC diagnosis Cloudflare recommends it for visualizing a DNS zone’s status and troubleshooting DNSSEC deployment.

What to check: A, MX, TXT, NS and DNSSEC

A and AAAA records

An A lookup checks for an IPv4 address associated with a hostname; AAAA is the corresponding record type for IPv6. These are useful when a site name does not reach the expected server. Confirm that you are checking the hostname visitors actually use: a root domain and a subdomain can have different DNS records.

Not only network cables, but also phone lines and BNC cables.

MX records

MX records identify the mail servers designated to receive email for a domain. Their priority values matter: a lower preference number is tried before a higher one. MxToolbox is a practical choice when you want to see mail-related records and run broader checks, but a lookup alone does not establish that a mail server accepts a message or that a whole mail setup is correct.

TXT records, including SPF, DKIM and DMARC

TXT records hold text associated with a domain. Email systems commonly use them for SPF, DKIM and DMARC configuration. MxToolbox includes these checks in its broader tool catalog. When verifying a change, compare the returned value with the exact value your email provider instructed you to publish; a record being present does not by itself prove that its syntax or policy is right.

NS records and authoritative servers

NS records identify the name servers responsible for a DNS zone. They are useful when checking whether a domain is delegated to the servers you intended. Keep the source of an answer in mind: MxToolbox says its DNS Lookup queries the authoritative name server, while dns.google is described as returning public-resolver responses. Those answers can differ temporarily because recursive resolvers may still have cached earlier data.

DNSSEC

DNSSEC adds signatures used to validate DNS data. If the issue concerns a signed zone, a visible record value may not explain a broken chain of validation. DNSViz is the specialist option among these five because it visualizes zone status and is recommended for DNSSEC deployment troubleshooting.

A practical workflow for checking DNS

  1. Write down the exact name and record type. For example, distinguish example.com from www.example.com, and decide whether you need A, MX, TXT, NS or another type.
  2. Start with Google Admin Toolbox Dig or dns.google. Use Dig for a simple general lookup; choose dns.google if you specifically want a public-resolver answer. Google Admin Toolbox Dig appends a trailing dot to the entered domain automatically.
  3. Use a second perspective when the result is unexpected. Compare a public-resolver result with an authoritative lookup where possible. A difference shortly after a change can be a cache or propagation issue rather than proof that the edit failed.
  4. For email, inspect the relevant records and broaden the diagnosis. Check the expected MX or TXT data, then use MxToolbox’s mail and DNS-health options if you need SPF, DKIM, DMARC or propagation checks. For Google Workspace, consider Check MX for common MX misconfigurations and whether name servers are reachable and know about one another.
  5. For a DNSSEC failure, switch to DNSViz. Use its zone visualization to investigate the signed-zone status rather than relying only on a plain record value.
  6. Recheck after a change. Google Workspace’s 2026 guidance says DNS changes can take up to 72 hours to take effect. The exact time for your record or resolver is not established by that general guidance, so check again later and compare more than one resolver when available.

Why a DNS change may not appear yet

A lookup tool reports an answer from a particular point in the DNS system; it does not make every resolver worldwide refresh at once. A recursive resolver can return a cached answer until it checks again. The authoritative name server may show the new value while a public resolver still reports an earlier one, or two public resolvers may disagree for a time. Google Workspace gives an upper guidance window of up to 72 hours for DNS changes to take effect.

When results differ, note which tool produced each answer and whether it queried an authoritative server or a public resolver. Then verify that the edit was made at the DNS provider authoritative for the domain, that the hostname and record type are the intended ones, and that the published value matches the provider’s instructions. Recheck after some time rather than treating one immediate mismatch as conclusive.

Troubleshooting common lookup problems

The lookup returns an unexpected IP address

Check that you queried the exact hostname, not a similar subdomain, and identify whether the tool is showing an authoritative or recursive answer. Compare with another resolver or an authoritative lookup if possible. If the DNS change was recent, allow time for cached answers to expire; Google Workspace advises that changes can take up to 72 hours to take effect.

MX records look wrong or mail still fails

Use a mail-focused check such as MxToolbox, confirm the MX target and priority against your mail provider’s setup instructions, and inspect SPF, DKIM and DMARC where relevant. A DNS lookup verifies published DNS data, not mail delivery, mailbox availability or every part of a sender-authentication configuration. Google Workspace administrators can also use Check MX to look for common MX misconfigurations and name-server reachability issues.

A TXT record is missing or incomplete

Confirm that you are querying the correct domain or subdomain and the TXT type, then compare the returned text with the exact value you were asked to publish. If an edit was just made, check again later and compare answers from another resolver. Do not infer that the setting is valid merely because some TXT data appears.

A DNSSEC warning appears

Use DNSViz for the zone-level visualization and DNSSEC troubleshooting it is designed for. A simple answer lookup may tell you what a resolver returned without making the signed-zone relationships clear.

Different tools show different answers

First compare what was queried: hostname, record type and answer source. MxToolbox says its DNS Lookup queries the authoritative name server; dns.google is a public-resolver lookup. Different sources, together with caching after a recent edit, can account for a mismatch. The tools’ documented descriptions do not support treating one result as a universal benchmark of correctness.

Automate the lookup or capture the result?

The five recommendations above are DNS lookup and diagnosis tools. ScreenshotNeo is not a DNS resolver and cannot verify DNS records; it is a separate option if your next task is to capture a webpage that you have opened after checking DNS. For DNS answers themselves, use one of the lookup tools above.

Or skip the browser setup

For a separate website screenshot task, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. For example, to capture a public DNS lookup page as an image, replace the target URL with the page you want to capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for the free plan.

Bottom line

Start with Google Admin Toolbox Dig for a general lookup. Use public-resolver tools to compare what users may see, MxToolbox for mail and broader DNS checks, and DNSViz for DNSSEC. After a change, compare answers from more than one source and allow for caching; a single lookup is a snapshot, not a guarantee of global propagation.
