No app can keep your data safe “no matter what.” An unlocked or infected device, a compromised email account, phishing, weak passwords, a stolen recovery key, or a malicious recipient can defeat otherwise good tools. The practical answer is a layered setup: separate apps for messages, passwords, login codes, files and network traffic.
For a general U.S. consumer, these five free tiers form a useful starting stack. Their plans and limits were checked on August 18, 2026; verify the linked official pages before relying on a particular limit.
What each app protects
| Risk or asset | App | Security control |
|---|---|---|
| Private chats, calls and media | Signal | End-to-end encrypted messaging |
| Weak or reused passwords | Bitwarden | Password generation and secure storage |
| Account takeover after password theft | 2FAS Auth | Separate one-time login codes |
| Lost, damaged or stolen files | Proton Drive | Encrypted cloud storage and backup |
| Local snooping on untrusted Wi-Fi | Proton VPN Free | Encrypted connection to a VPN server |
Encryption in transit protects data while it moves. End-to-end encryption is intended to keep content unreadable to intermediaries and the service provider. Password managers and multifactor authentication protect account access, while backups protect availability. A VPN mainly changes what a local network observer can see; it does not make you anonymous.

Best for: stopping password reuse across email, banking, social media and shopping accounts.
#1 Best Overall
- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
Bitwarden’s free individual plan includes core vault storage, synchronization and password generation. Check its official comparison for the current boundary between free and premium features; encrypted attachments, emergency access and some reports are paid features.
Set it up
- Create your account through the official website or app.
- Use a long master passphrase made from several unrelated words. Keep an offline record as well as a trusted personal record; losing it can make the encrypted vault unrecoverable.
- Enable two-step login, preferably with an authenticator app or security key rather than email.
- Import browser passwords only after confirming the vault works, then delete any unencrypted export.
- Replace reused passwords first for your primary email, Apple/Google/Microsoft account, bank, mobile carrier, social accounts and cloud storage.
- Generate a different password for every new account. Periodically export an encrypted backup, never an unprotected CSV left on your computer.
Bitwarden cannot stop phishing, malicious browser extensions or autofill on a lookalike domain. Check the website address before accepting autofill. Keeping passwords and second-factor codes in one vault is convenient but creates concentration risk, which is why this setup uses 2FAS separately.
2. 2FAS Auth: keep the second factor separate
Best for: time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) for email, banking, social media and your password manager.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2FAS describes its authenticator as local-first, offline-capable and usable without a required account. That reduces dependence on a server, but it also makes recovery your responsibility.
Set it up
- Install 2FAS Auth, not a similarly named password-manager product.
- Turn on the app’s local lock or biometric protection before adding accounts.
- Add two-factor authentication to your most important accounts, beginning with primary email and Bitwarden.
- Store each service’s recovery codes in Bitwarden or print them and keep them offline.
- Create and test a 2FAS backup, then keep it protected and separate from your phone.
A six-digit code does not defeat phishing if you type it into a fake site or tell it to an attacker. SMS codes are generally weaker than an authenticator or a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key because of SIM-swap and number-porting attacks. For high-value accounts, consider a hardware key and keep a spare.
3. Signal: private conversations by default
Best for: encrypted messages, calls, photos, videos, files and voice messages.
Signal says its messages and calls use the open-source Signal Protocol with end-to-end encryption by default, and that the service has no ads or trackers. Everyone in a conversation must use Signal for Signal’s protections to apply to the exchanged content.

- Install Signal from the official app store or download page and register your phone number.
- Create a strong Signal PIN and store it in Bitwarden.
- Enable registration lock if it is available under the current account settings.
- Use the phone’s screen lock and hide notification previews.
- For unusually sensitive conversations, compare safety numbers in person or through another trusted channel.
- Use disappearing messages only when appropriate.
Signal protects content, not every piece of metadata. An unlocked or spyware-infected phone can reveal decrypted messages, and a recipient can screenshot, copy, photograph or forward them. Disappearing messages do not change that. Phone-number takeovers and SIM swaps can also threaten account control. Treat operating-system updates and device security as prerequisites.
4. Proton Drive: encrypted storage and a real backup habit
Best for: identity documents, scans, photos and other files you need after a device is lost or damaged.
Rank #2
- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government

- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac

- SuperSpeed USB 3.0 - Transfer all your confidential files and folders faster than ever before. Works on both PC & Mac
Proton currently lists 5 GB free, with secure sharing and document tools. Proton says Drive encrypts files end to end so Proton cannot access their contents; that is the provider’s design claim, not a guarantee against a compromised device, wrong recipient or lost account access.
Set it up
- Create a Proton account with a unique Bitwarden-generated password and protect it with 2FAS.
- Install Drive on your phone and computer.
- Enable photo backup only after checking which folders and accounts are included.
- Upload irreplaceable files first: identity and insurance records, tax documents and important photos.
- For sensitive sharing, use password-protected, expiring links.
- Keep a second backup for irreplaceable data and periodically download a file to verify that restoration works.
Five gigabytes fills quickly with video. End-to-end encryption cannot protect a file shared with the wrong person, and automatic synchronization is not immunity from ransomware: encrypted or corrupted files can synchronize too. Do not delete originals until the backup has been checked.
5. Proton VPN Free: safer connections on public Wi-Fi
Best for: reducing local interception on hotel, airport, café and other untrusted networks.
According to its current free-plan page, Proton VPN Free supports one device, unlimited bandwidth, no ads and a no-logs policy. The VPN encrypts traffic between your device and Proton’s server and masks your IP address from websites. “No logs” is a provider policy, not proof that a VPN makes you invisible.
Set it up
- Install the official app and sign in.
- Enable the VPN before using untrusted Wi-Fi.
- Turn on the kill switch and automatic connection on untrusted networks when your operating system supports them.
- Confirm the connection in the app, not only through a browser extension.
- Disconnect temporarily if a bank, workplace or other service rejects VPN traffic.
A VPN does not stop phishing, malware, tracking through logged-in accounts, browser fingerprinting or destination websites from seeing your activity. The VPN provider can observe some connection metadata, and websites may block VPN addresses. It is less important on a trusted, updated home network than keeping your operating system, browser and router patched.
Set up the stack in this order
- Secure primary email. Give it a unique Bitwarden password, 2FAS or a hardware key, saved recovery codes, and review active sessions and forwarding rules.
- Install Bitwarden. Replace reused passwords and enable two-step login.
- Protect Bitwarden with 2FAS. Test your authenticator backup and keep recovery codes offline.
- Move private conversations to Signal. Add a PIN, registration lock and screen privacy.
- Back up critical files to Proton Drive. Check the folders, test downloads and maintain an independent copy.
- Use Proton VPN on untrusted networks. Remember that it is not an anti-phishing or anti-malware tool.
- Harden the device. Install updates, use a strong screen lock, remove unknown profiles and accessibility permissions, and keep remote-device controls enabled.
When one app is not enough
If your phone is lost, use remote-device controls, revoke sessions and retrieve offline recovery codes. If your main email may be compromised, change its password from a known-clean device and inspect forwarding rules. After suspected spyware or malware, stop trusting the device, update or reset it as appropriate, and change passwords from another clean device.
Recommended Free Tools
Using several Proton services is convenient, but it concentrates recovery behind one provider. Keep an independent recovery email, offline codes, a second backup and—where appropriate—a spare hardware key. Free plans, storage limits, device counts and feature names can change, so confirm the official pages before depending on them.
Practical checklist
- Every important account has a unique password.
- Email, Bitwarden, cloud storage and financial accounts have 2FA.
- Recovery codes are stored offline.
- Phone, computer, browser and router are updated.
- Backups have been tested by downloading and opening files.
- Shared links expire and require a password when appropriate.
- Unexpected login links are ignored; open services from a saved bookmark or official app.
- No single app or provider is your only recovery path.
The Bottom Line
The five apps cover different problems rather than offering magical, all-purpose protection: Bitwarden protects credentials, 2FAS adds a separate second factor, Signal protects conversation content, Proton Drive protects files and recovery, and Proton VPN reduces local network snooping. Their value depends on a locked, updated device, careful recovery planning and resisting phishing.
