If you need a quick count, start with WordCounter.net. For a tool whose provider says it processes text locally in your browser, consider Word-Counter.org—but treat that as a provider claim, not an independent security audit. If you are already writing in a document, Microsoft Word for the web or Google Docs is usually more convenient than copying text into another site.

- Already writing in a document? Use Word for the web or Google Docs so you can count without moving text to another service.
- Editing for SEO or readability? Choose a counter that offers keyword or readability statistics, but use them as diagnostics—not as guarantees of search performance or writing quality.
- Counting a file? Confirm that the exact format is supported and that the extracted text is complete. WordCounter.net lists PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX and ODT uploads.
- Handling confidential writing? Prefer a tool with clear, acceptable data-handling terms, or count inside the editor where the document already lives. “Free” does not mean private.

WordCounter.net is the strongest starting point when you want a quick total but may also need more detail. Its page lists word and character counts (including and excluding spaces), sentences, paragraphs, unique words, lines, syllables, estimated pages, reading and speaking time, and keyword density. It also offers text utilities and options such as downloading, printing, sharing and saving.

The site says it can accept PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX and ODT files. It also advertises Google Drive saving. Uploading an accepted file does not guarantee perfect extraction: PDFs in particular can omit or scramble text in scans, columns, tables, captions, footnotes, headers or text boxes. Check the extracted content against the original before relying on the result.
How to use it: Open the counter, paste text into its editor and read the live statistics. For a file, confirm its format is listed, upload a copy rather than your only original, then inspect the extracted text and relevant counts. If you do not want a cloud save, avoid enabling one. The feature page does not by itself establish how long uploaded or saved text is retained.
Best for: Students, bloggers, editors and copywriters who want several statistics in one place, or need to count a supported document file.

Trade-off: More features mean more interface to navigate, and autosave or cloud-save options make it especially important to understand where your text may be stored. Do not infer a privacy guarantee from the presence of a counter.
2. Word-Counter.org: best for a quick count with analysis
Word-Counter.org advertises real-time word and character totals, with and without spaces, plus sentences, paragraphs, reading and speaking time, readability, syllables, unique words and keyword density. Its page also describes find-and-replace, text cleaning, download, print, copy and clear controls.
The provider says analysis runs locally in the browser and that text does not leave the device, and it advertises use without signing up. Those are useful statements to look for, but they are not independent security certification. Confirm the current privacy policy and feature availability before entering a confidential assignment, résumé, client draft or business document.

How to use it: Paste plain text into the editor and review the count and statistics as you edit. Use the text-cleaning or find-and-replace controls only if you want to alter the text; keep your original elsewhere if the wording matters.
Best for: A fast check where you want more than a word total, particularly if the stated local-processing approach suits your needs.

3. Microsoft Word for the web: best when your draft is already in Word
Word for the web makes sense if you are already writing, revising or sharing a document in Microsoft’s online editor. Microsoft describes a word count visible in the lower-left area of the document, a way to count selected text, and a word-count control for more detailed statistics. Its online document workflow is more useful for ongoing editing than a bare counter page.
Workflow: Open or create a document in Word for the web, enter or paste your text, and check the count in the lower-left area. Select a passage to count only that portion; use the word-count control to see further statistics. Exact interface labels and placement can change.

It can also reduce unnecessary copying of a working draft into another service, though that does not make it a local-only tool: consider the document’s own account and sharing settings.

5. WordCount.com: best for a collection of writing utilities
WordCount.com describes a collection of tools rather than just one counter. Its about page lists utilities for words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and syllables, alongside reading-time, readability, word-frequency and platform character-count tools.
Best for: Writers who want to explore several kinds of text checks from one service, especially readability or frequency analysis beyond a basic total.
Trade-off: The cited description is the provider’s own overview. It does not establish independent performance, current limits, privacy practices, registration requirements or whether each utility is available without payment. Check the specific tool and its terms before relying on it.
What word and character counters actually count
A word counter generally splits text according to its own rules and reports a total. Depending on the tool, it may also show characters with spaces, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, syllables, estimated pages, reading or speaking time, keyword frequency, keyword density or readability scores. The extra figures are not all equally definitive: reading time is an estimate based on assumed pace, and readability formulas cannot capture every aspect of whether a passage is clear.
Character counts matter when a platform or form limits length by characters rather than words. Always check whether its limit includes spaces, punctuation, links, line breaks, emojis or other content. A counter’s “characters without spaces” figure is not interchangeable with a platform’s character limit unless their rules match.
Why two word counts can differ
There is no universal counting rule that every tool, school and publishing platform follows. A hyphenated phrase such as “state-of-the-art,” a URL, an email address, a decimal number, a contraction, a hashtag or an emoji may be treated differently. Line and paragraph breaks can affect sentence or paragraph totals. In a formatted document, tables, text boxes, captions, headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes and references may be included by one counter and excluded by another.

For academic work, the important question is not which counter produces the larger number; it is which components the assignment says to include and which system the institution uses. Microsoft’s guidance, for example, says its Word count includes quotations and in-text citations but excludes footnotes and endnotes. Other systems can apply different rules. If the submission portal provides its own count, treat that count as authoritative and leave a small buffer below a maximum.
Quick paste-and-count workflow
- Open a tool that fits the task and check that it does not require an account or feature you do not want to use.
- Paste plain text into the counter.
- Check the word total and, if relevant, characters with and without spaces.
- Review sentences and paragraphs if those limits matter.
- If the text came from a PDF or formatted web page, check for missing, duplicated or rearranged text.
- For a high-stakes limit, compare the result with the destination editor or submission system.
Counting an uploaded document
Use file upload only when it saves meaningful effort and the service supports your format. WordCounter.net lists PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX and ODT. Upload a copy, inspect what the tool extracted, and compare tables, captions, notes, headers and footers with the source. A PDF may contain scanned page images rather than searchable text; it may also have columns, hyphenated line endings or embedded text elements that extraction handles poorly. If words are missing, convert the PDF to editable text or use the source document and review the result before submitting.
A file being accepted is not proof that its count is complete. For confidential work, also check upload retention and privacy terms before sending the file.
Privacy: free does not mean private
A free counter can still involve data collection, storage, analytics, third-party scripts or other processing. Before pasting unpublished fiction, student work, client copy, a résumé, legal text or proprietary research, check whether the provider says processing is local or server-side, whether text is saved automatically, what happens to uploads, and what its privacy policy says about retention and use. Do not assume a service uses or does not use text for AI training without a clear policy statement.
Word-Counter.org says its analysis is local to the browser; WordCounter.net advertises autosave and Google Drive saving. These descriptions are not equivalent: local-processing language is a provider claim, while save features warrant checking what is saved and where. For especially sensitive text, use an editor you already trust under your organization’s rules, or avoid submitting the content to an unfamiliar website.
When a word-count estimate is not enough
- Large manuscript: Do not assume a browser page can handle an entire book reliably. A very large paste or upload can slow the browser, be truncated or fail, especially on a phone. Split the manuscript by chapter and total the results unless the service explicitly supports files of that size.
- PDF count is unexpectedly low: Check whether the PDF is scanned, whether text sits in columns or images, and whether notes, captions or tables were omitted. Verify extracted text before trusting the number.
- Counts disagree: Compare what each tool includes and how it treats punctuation and formatting. Use the destination’s own counter for formal limits.
- Reading time looks exact: It is an estimate, not a timed test. Pace, sentence complexity, layout and familiarity with the subject all affect actual reading time.
- Keyword density suggests a target: Use frequency as an editing check for accidental repetition, not as a ranking formula or required percentage. Clear, relevant writing matters more than hitting a density number.
Which one should you use?
For most one-off checks, try WordCounter.net; it combines a direct count with broad statistics and listed file support. If the provider’s stated local-processing approach is important, consider Word-Counter.org after reviewing its current privacy terms. Choose Word for the web or Google Docs when the text is already in that editor and you want to keep drafting or collaborate. Try WordCount.com if you want a collection of analysis utilities, while checking each feature’s current terms.
For an essay, application or publication limit, the safest counter is the one whose counting rules match the recipient’s—not necessarily the site with the most statistics. A quick final check in the actual destination can prevent a mismatch.
