For genuinely free food in the UK, start with Olio; Neighbourly Surplus Saviours may also offer free collections in participating areas. Too Good To Go and Karma are free to download but generally sell surplus food at a discount. All four depend on local availability, and collection is usually required.

The “US” in the original topic is best understood as the intended audience: these are UK services, not US apps. Check current listings near your UK postcode before planning a meal or trip.

“Free app” and “free food” are different things. Too Good To Go and Karma generally charge for the food, even though the app itself is free to access. Olio and Neighbourly are the options here that can provide food at no charge. None guarantees a meal, a particular quantity or a particular saving.

1. Olio: the clearest option for free food

Olio is a local-sharing app. People can offer food to neighbours, and volunteer Food Waste Heroes collect surplus from participating businesses and list it for nearby users. Listings can include bread, produce, cupboard staples and ready-to-eat food, alongside non-food items. Olio describes its service and sharing model on its official site.

  1. Set your location and browse nearby listings, filtering or searching for food if needed.
  2. Read the listing for the item, quantity, collection instructions and any date or storage details.
  3. Request the item and wait for the lister to approve you.
  4. Arrange and make the collection as agreed.

Free food is not guaranteed or necessarily first-come, first-served: the lister may approve a request, and popular items can go quickly. Supply changes by neighbourhood and day. Olio also has optional paid or in-app features listed in the UK App Store, but these do not make every food listing paid; check the listing and app terms for the current offer.

Best for: someone seeking free food who can check the app regularly, message a lister and collect locally. It is a poor substitute for predictable meal planning if you need a specific item at a specific time.

2. Too Good To Go: cheap food if you accept a surprise

Too Good To Go lets participating businesses sell surplus as “Surprise Bags.” The company says its UK service offers food at half price or less, but that is its description of the service, not a guarantee that every bag has the same price or value. See Too Good To Go’s UK page.

  1. Enter a location and browse nearby businesses, prices and collection windows.
  2. Check the distance, pickup time and available details before reserving.
  3. Reserve and pay in the app.
  4. Collect during the specified window and follow the app’s order-verification instructions.

The business chooses the contents, so you normally cannot plan around an exact meal. A bag could include food you do not eat, more than you can use, or items that need prompt refrigeration or consumption. That makes this a better fit for flexible eaters than for anyone who must avoid particular ingredients.

Best for: inexpensive bakery, grocery or prepared-food surplus when you can collect on time and are comfortable with uncertainty. A low listed price is not a saving if the trip costs more than the food or the contents go unused.

3. Karma: more choice, but check whether it operates nearby

Karma is a paid surplus-food marketplace: participating businesses list individual items for takeaway collection, rather than relying mainly on mystery bags. You browse offers, choose an item, pay in the app and collect it from the merchant during the stated period. Its UK App Store listing describes the item-based model.

Because an item may be identified in its listing, Karma can offer more control than a Surprise Bag. That does not mean every listing contains complete ingredient or allergen information. Check the details and ask the merchant if something is unclear; do not assume a listing is suitable for an allergy or dietary restriction simply because the food is named.

Coverage is a key caveat. The UK App Store description has referred to London and Brighton, but that geographic statement should not be treated as a permanent or nationwide coverage map. Check the live app for offers at your location before relying on it.

Best for: readers near active merchants who want to select a particular discounted item. It is not a free-food option, and it may be a poor fit outside its current coverage areas.

4. Neighbourly Surplus Saviours: free collections in selected areas

Neighbourly’s Surplus Saviours programme connects individuals with free surplus food from participating stores. It is a collection programme, not a universal restaurant-deal marketplace. Neighbourly says the programme is being trialled in selected areas; its programme information describes local access and possible waiting for a place or slot.

  1. Create a free Neighbourly account and apply or activate Surplus Saviours if it is available in your area.
  2. Identify participating local stores and follow the programme’s approval and slot instructions.
  3. Watch for notifications and collect when assigned or notified.
  4. If you cannot attend, follow the programme’s instructions so the food can potentially be offered to someone else.

Some applicants may wait for access, and collection depends on local participation and available slots. It is therefore unlikely to solve an immediate need for dinner tonight. It may suit people who can attend recurring collections and live close to a participating store. Neighbourly also serves charities and community groups through separate routes; those arrangements are not the same as an individual consumer ordering a meal.

Best for: a free, potentially recurring surplus collection where the scheme operates and you can meet its schedule—not for visitors who need an instant meal.

Choose by what matters most

  • You need food at no charge: Try Olio first. Check Neighbourly if your area has an active Surplus Saviours programme.
  • You want a cheap meal or groceries and can accept unknown contents: Try Too Good To Go, after checking the pickup time and journey.
  • You want to choose the actual item: Look at Karma if its live listings show meaningful coverage near you.
  • You need dependable food on a schedule: Do not rely on surplus listings alone; they depend on what is left over and when it can be collected.

Before reserving or requesting food

  • Check the full collection cost. Include bus or train fare, parking, bike hire and the possibility that the food is not useful to you.
  • Check the collection window. A bargain that you cannot reach before closing is not a bargain.
  • Think about quantity and storage. Make sure you can eat, refrigerate or freeze the food as appropriate; do not collect more than you can safely use.
  • Read item details and ask about allergens. Mystery bags are a poor choice if you must avoid specific ingredients. Even a named item may not provide enough information in the app.
  • Plan for transport and mobility. Listings generally require collection, and pickup locations or times may be inconvenient.
  • Use more than one service if practical. The right app depends on which businesses, volunteers and neighbours are active around you.

Food safety: check dates and storage instructions

A food-rescue listing is not a food-safety guarantee. In the UK, a use-by date concerns safety; a best-before date is primarily about quality. Follow the label’s date and storage instructions, including any directions for chilled or opened food. Do not treat smell or appearance as a way to override a use-by date. If food is damaged, leaking, or appears unsafe, do not accept or eat it. When unsure about ingredients or handling, ask the merchant or lister before collecting.

For UK-specific guidance on date labels and food safety, consult the Food Standards Agency. US readers should also remember that these apps use UK collection locations, local currency and UK date labels; a visitor needs to be physically near participating listings and able to make the pickup.

If you need reliable food support

These apps can help with occasional savings and redirect some surplus, but they do not guarantee a steady supply and should not be treated as a substitute for emergency food support. If you cannot reliably access food, contact your local council, a recognised food bank or a community support organisation. Community fridges and mutual-aid groups may also help locally, but their opening hours, eligibility and supplies vary.
