Outside the United States, Kaspersky is the stronger pick if you value recent independent protection testing; 360 Total Security is the more compelling option if you want a free antivirus-and-utilities package. The evidence is not an even head-to-head: Kaspersky appears in recent consumer lab tests, while 360 was not listed in the current test sets reviewed here. For U.S. readers, the practical answer is different: Kaspersky says purchases are unavailable and that U.S. antivirus updates were to stop under the 2024 restrictions, so choose Microsoft Defender or another currently available product instead.
First, what does “Kaspersky Antivirus” mean now?
Kaspersky’s current consumer lineup uses Standard, Plus, and Premium names. Standard is the closest match to the older entry-level Kaspersky Anti-Virus product; Plus and Premium add more suite features. Older pages may still use names such as Internet Security or Total Security. This comparison therefore focuses on 360 Total Security versus Kaspersky Standard, not 360’s free edition versus Kaspersky’s most expensive bundle. Kaspersky’s current plan lineup provides the present naming and feature distinctions.

The matchup is not perfectly symmetrical: 360 is marketed as a free security-and-utility product, while Standard is a paid plan, generally offered with a trial in places where it can be purchased. A broader Kaspersky tier may include useful extras, but those extras do not prove that its core antivirus protection is better.

Which offers stronger malware protection?
Kaspersky has the stronger current independent-testing record. AV-TEST’s Windows 11 evaluations list Kaspersky Premium version 21.24 with 6/6 for protection, performance, and usability in both the April 2026 results and the June 2026 results. Those are category scores for the named product and test periods—not a claim that Kaspersky catches every threat, and not a direct result for every Kaspersky plan. AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test also lists Kaspersky Premium versions 21.24 and 21.25. This test examines protection in web-browsing scenarios involving malicious sites. It is useful complementary evidence, but it is not a direct 360-versus-Kaspersky trial.
360 Total Security was not listed in the current AV-TEST Windows 11 pages or the 2025 AV-Comparatives consumer summary reviewed for this comparison. That absence does not prove 360 is ineffective; it means there is less recent, directly comparable independent evidence on which to base a ranking. Be cautious with old awards, old product versions, or precise detection percentages that do not identify a current, comparable test.
In short: choose Kaspersky outside the U.S. if independent lab evidence is your main criterion. Choose 360 primarily for its free-product proposition and bundled utilities, not because current evidence establishes that it matches Kaspersky’s tested protection.
What do you get beyond antivirus?
360 Total Security: free protection plus PC utilities
360’s official site positions the product as a free security application combined with cleanup and optimization tools. The exact mix of scanning engines, web or phishing protection, ransomware controls, sandboxing, software updating, optional components, and operating-system support can change. Check the current product and download information for your region rather than assuming a feature listed in an older review is still included, enabled by default, or free.
Free does not necessarily mean every feature is unrestricted or that the interface contains no promotional prompts. Before installing, review the setup choices, notification settings, account requirements, and privacy disclosures. Treat cleanup suggestions as suggestions: review what will be removed, avoid automatic registry changes, and do not disable security services simply to make a PC feel faster.
Kaspersky Standard, Plus, and Premium
Kaspersky Standard’s listed core includes antivirus, anti-malware, anti-ransomware, and safe-browsing protection, with performance and privacy tools also described in plan materials. Kaspersky’s consumer pages list support across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, though individual features differ by platform. The Standard page and Windows product information describe the current offering and requirements.
Moving up to Plus or Premium can add or expand features such as an unlimited VPN, password manager, identity-related tools, Safe Kids, smart-home monitoring, or support and removal services. Exact inclusions depend on plan and market; see the plan comparison. If you only need antivirus, paying for those extras may not make sense.

Free product versus free trial: read the terms
360’s central appeal is a free edition, but check its live terms for the boundaries between core protection, optional upgrades, and bundled utilities. No current 360 price or feature restriction should be assumed from an old comparison.

Kaspersky’s U.S. Standard offer is a 30-day free trial, not an indefinitely free equivalent to 360. Its trial page says the subscription can become a paid annual subscription unless cancelled. Introductory and renewal prices may differ; Kaspersky says renewal information is disclosed through the offer, checkout, and receipt. Review the terms in the market where you live, and set a reminder before the trial ends if you do not want a paid renewal. The U.S. trial terms are described on the Standard trial page.

AV-TEST awarded Kaspersky Premium 21.24 full performance scores in its cited April and June 2026 Windows 11 tests, and AV-Comparatives includes Kaspersky Premium 21.24 in its April 2026 performance report. These results support a positive view of the tested Kaspersky build under lab conditions; they do not tell you exactly how either product will affect your particular PC or prove that 360 is heavier.
360’s cleanup and startup-optimization tools may be useful if you want system utilities in the same interface, but more modules can also mean more background activity or notifications. Without comparable current measurements, there is no sound basis here to declare one product universally lighter. On an older or low-spec PC, test the product on your own hardware and check idle resource use, scan time, app launches, and notification frequency.
For either product, distinguish a security warning from a cleanup recommendation. Do not automatically delete unfamiliar files or browser data, and do not accept a “performance” change that disables protection without understanding the trade-off. Kaspersky’s account and activation requirements may also be a drawback if you prefer a standalone, account-free setup; check local plan terms and the current installation flow.
Privacy, trust, and the U.S. availability issue
Malware-test scores answer a different question from privacy or legal suitability. They do not settle what data a product collects, how cloud scanning works, where a vendor operates, or whether the product can receive updates in your country. Review the current privacy policy and settings for whichever product you choose, particularly cloud scanning, diagnostics, analytics, and optional components. Do not infer that 360 is spyware—or that either vendor is privacy-friendly—without evidence specific to current policies and settings.
For U.S. readers, Kaspersky is not a sensible new consumer recommendation. Kaspersky says it stopped U.S. sales contracts ahead of July 20, 2024, and that U.S. consumers and businesses would be prohibited from receiving antivirus signature and codebase updates from September 30, 2024. Its U.S. home-security page says purchase is unavailable to U.S. customers. Publicly visible trial or product pages are not proof that a normal, supported U.S. purchase and update relationship is available. This is a geography-specific availability and regulatory issue, not a conclusion about the quality of Kaspersky’s lab results elsewhere. Outside the U.S., availability and applicable rules can differ; check local purchasing and support terms before subscribing.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Kaspersky Standard outside the U.S. if you want the stronger recent independent-test record and prefer a paid security product with broad platform support.
- Consider 360 Total Security if avoiding a subscription is the priority and you want antivirus alongside PC cleanup utilities. Accept that current independent comparison evidence is thinner, and review the live free-edition terms and privacy settings.
- Consider Kaspersky Plus or Premium outside the U.S. only if you will use the additional VPN, password, family, identity, or support features; do not pay for a bundle simply because it has a higher tier name.
- If you are in the U.S., do not start with Kaspersky. Use Microsoft Defender or investigate a currently available alternative such as Bitdefender, ESET, Norton, Malwarebytes, or F-Secure. Confirm current regional availability and terms for any alternative before purchasing.
- If you are already using Microsoft Defender successfully, you may not need another real-time antivirus suite. Add a second product only for a clear reason, and avoid running two full real-time antivirus products together.
- If privacy is your main concern, compare current privacy disclosures, cloud features, jurisdiction, and controls—not only malware scores.
Switching safely
- Back up important files before changing security software.
- Uninstall your existing third-party real-time antivirus and restart the PC. Use the vendor’s removal tool if a normal uninstall leaves components behind.
- Install only one full real-time antivirus suite. Multiple products may conflict through drivers, duplicate scans, browser or network filtering, or competing quarantine actions.
- After installation, check Windows Security to confirm which provider is active. Enable automatic updates and run an initial scan.
- Review browser, ransomware, and privacy controls. If a cleaner proposes deleting files or changing startup items, inspect each recommendation rather than accepting everything automatically.
- If starting a paid trial, read the renewal terms and set a cancellation reminder if you do not intend to continue.
Neither antivirus replaces Windows and browser updates, multi-factor authentication, strong unique passwords, secure backups, or caution with phishing links and pirated software. Those basics matter whichever product you choose.
