Physical damage or a short circuit, excessive heat or improper charging, and a defective or counterfeit power bank are the three main conditions that can make a power bank catch fire or rupture. What people call an “explosion” is usually a lithium-ion battery failure called thermal runaway: heat builds uncontrollably inside a cell, which can release gas and smoke, start a fire, or rupture the casing. Not every failure is dramatic, but any sign of a failing battery calls for caution.
1. Physical damage or a short circuit
A drop, puncture, bend, or crushing force can damage a cell or its internal insulation. A power bank can also be damaged inside luggage or a bag without its outer case looking badly damaged. Faults may not appear until later, so apparently normal operation immediately after an accident does not prove the battery is safe.
Conductive objects can cause an external short if they bridge exposed terminals or connectors. Keep a power bank away from loose keys, coins, tools, and other metal objects; use a pouch or case when carrying it. The FAA’s lithium-battery guidance recommends protecting terminals with original packaging, tape, a battery case, sleeve, or protective pouch. Water exposure can also raise the risk, especially if it leads to corrosion, leakage, or a short.

2. Excessive heat or improper charging
Some warmth during charging or high-output use can be normal. Painful, rapidly increasing, or unusual heat is not. Heat speeds battery degradation and, in a damaged or defective cell, can contribute to thermal runaway.
Keep charging cool and ventilated
- Charge on a hard, nonflammable surface, not on a bed, sofa, or pile of clothing.
- Do not cover the power bank with bedding, clothing, or other insulating material while it is charging.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and do not leave it in a hot vehicle.
- Use an undamaged cable and a reputable charger compatible with the power bank and the manufacturer’s instructions.
Fast charging is not inherently unsafe when the power bank and charger are designed to work together. Nor does an overnight charge automatically mean a fire will occur: properly designed charging controls are intended to limit or stop charging at safe levels. Risk is higher when the charger is unsuitable, the battery is damaged, or the product’s charging or protection circuitry is faulty. The FAA lists overheating and overcharging among possible thermal-runaway triggers; UL Research Institutes explains that counterfeit batteries may lack adequate overcharge and overheating protection.
3. A defective, counterfeit, or recalled power bank
You can follow charging and storage precautions and still encounter a product defect. Faulty cells, poor assembly, inadequate insulation, loose internal parts, or missing or defective protection circuitry can allow a short, overcharge, or overheating. Counterfeit products may imitate a brand, packaging, specifications, or safety mark without providing the protections they claim.

UL Research Institutes recommends buying from the original equipment manufacturer or a trusted retailer and looking for certification from a nationally recognized testing laboratory. A printed certification logo by itself is not proof that a particular listing or unit is genuine: marks can be copied. Check the exact model and seller, and look up recalls before using a product.
U.S. recalls show why the exact model matters
- Yiisonger KT-D007: On May 15, 2025, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using this model. The agency cited 79 reports of units exploding, igniting, or swelling; about 93,000 were sold on Amazon from April 2022 through February 2025. The CPSC reported one serious fire involving $15 million in property damage. See the CPSC warning.
- INIU BI-B41: A CPSC recall dated December 5, 2025, covered about 210,000 10,000-mAh power banks with serial numbers 000G21, 000H21, 000I21, and 000L21. INIU reported 15 overheating incidents, including 11 fires, three minor burn injuries, and more than $380,000 in property damage. Check the CPSC recall notice for affected-product details and instructions.
- Anker models A1647, A1652, A1257, A1681, and A1689: The CPSC recall dated September 18, 2025, covered about 481,000 units and cited 33 fire and explosion incidents. See the CPSC recall notice.
These notices concern specific products; they do not establish that every power bank from those brands, or every marketplace product, is unsafe. Check the model and, where applicable, serial number rather than relying on a familiar brand name.
Warning signs: when to stop using it
Disconnect the power bank if that can be done safely, and stop using it if you notice any of these signs:

- The casing is swelling or bulging, or a gap is developing.
- It becomes unusually hot during ordinary charging or use.
- It smokes, hisses, pops, leaks, or emits a chemical odor.
- The case is cracked, punctured, badly dented, melted, or marked by burns.
- A connector is melted, or the power bank charges erratically or repeatedly shuts itself off.
- It has been significantly exposed to water or is listed in a recall.
An unknown seller, suspicious labeling, implausible capacity claims, or a certification mark that looks counterfeit are reasons not to trust a product. They are not, by themselves, a way to diagnose the battery’s condition; verify the seller and model before use.
What to do if a power bank overheats, swells, smokes, or burns
If it is only warm
Unplug it and, if it is safe to handle, move it away from bedding, clothing, paper, and other combustible materials. Let it cool on a nonflammable surface while you keep it in view. Do not resume use until you understand why it became unusually warm; if the heat was abnormal, replacement is the safer choice.
If it is swelling, smoking, hissing, or burning
- Move people and pets away. Do not handle or carry a severely damaged or burning battery through the home or put it in a vehicle.
- Call 911 or your local fire department, and tell responders a lithium-ion battery is involved.
- Follow emergency responders’ or local fire-department instructions. Do not puncture, crush, disassemble, or try to repair the device.
Do not put a visibly smoking or burning power bank in a sealed indoor container unless emergency guidance specifically tells you to. Do not improvise a response by putting it in water or a freezer. For air travel, notify the flight crew immediately if a lithium battery overheats, expands, smokes, or burns, as the FAA instructs.

How to dispose of a defective or recalled power bank
Do not put a damaged or recalled lithium-ion power bank in household trash, curbside recycling, or an ordinary used-battery collection box unless the receiving program explicitly confirms that it accepts defective or recalled units. Such batteries need handling instructions specific to their condition.
- Stop using the power bank and check the manufacturer’s recall instructions for replacement or refund options.
- Contact your local household hazardous-waste facility before transporting the unit. Ask specifically whether it accepts damaged, defective, swollen, or recalled lithium-ion batteries, and follow its packaging and drop-off instructions.
- If the device is hot, actively smoking, or burning, do not transport it; call emergency services.
The CPSC’s Yiisonger warning and INIU recall both direct consumers to seek special disposal guidance for affected batteries.

Taking a power bank on a U.S. flight
Power banks count as spare lithium-ion batteries. Under FAA guidance, they must go in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. If your carry-on is taken at the gate or planeside, remove the power bank and keep it in the cabin. Protect its terminals from short circuits. The FAA’s standard passenger allowance generally covers power banks rated at 100 watt-hours (Wh) or less, but airline rules can be stricter; check with your airline before flying. Do not fly with a damaged, defective, or recalled battery. See the FAA PackSafe rules and its lithium-batteries baggage guidance.

Estimate watt-hours from the label
If the product lists milliamp-hours and voltage but not watt-hours, the calculation is:
Wh = mAh × V ÷ 1,000
For example, a nominal 20,000-mAh power bank at 3.7 V is about 74 Wh: 20,000 × 3.7 ÷ 1,000 = 74. Use the Wh rating printed on the power bank or stated in the manufacturer’s documentation when available; labeling conventions can differ. Confirm the airline’s rules even if the calculated rating is below 100 Wh.
How to reduce risk when buying, using, and storing one
Before buying
- Buy from the manufacturer’s official store or a reputable retailer, and check the seller identity.
- Verify the exact model number, manufacturer, capacity, and input/output specifications.
- Look for independently verifiable certification from a nationally recognized testing laboratory; do not rely on a logo alone.
- Be skeptical of implausibly high capacity claims at unusually low prices, or unclear spelling, packaging, warranty, and support details.
- Search CPSC recall notices and the manufacturer’s recall page for the exact model before use.
- Avoid loose cells and modified battery packs.
During use and storage
- Keep the power bank dry, ventilated, and away from direct heat; do not leave it in a hot car.
- Use compatible, undamaged charging equipment and do not cover the bank while it charges.
- Keep it away from children or pets who could puncture or chew it.
- Store it in a cool, dry place, away from metal objects. Use a pouch or case when carrying it.
- Do not store a damaged unit indoors while waiting to arrange disposal; contact the local hazardous-waste facility for instructions.
Choosing a safer replacement
Choose for traceability and fit, not simply for the largest capacity, highest wattage, or highest price. A smaller 5,000–10,000-mAh unit may be easier to carry; a 20,000-mAh model stores more energy and may provide more phone recharges, but is heavier. A high-output laptop bank may suit a laptop but can cost more and require extra attention to airline limits.

Quick Recap
- Seller and support: Prefer an official manufacturer or established retailer with clear warranty and support details.
- Identifiable product: Look for a clear model number, manufacturer identity, capacity, and input/output ratings.
- Safety evidence: Prefer verifiable independent certification. Manufacturer claims about overcharge, over-discharge, over-current, short-circuit, and temperature protection are useful, but do not replace independent certification or guarantee that a product cannot fail.
- Recall transparency: Check whether the manufacturer provides a clear recall page or serial-number lookup, then check the exact model against current notices.
- Right-sized features: More ports, greater wattage, and magnetic or wireless charging can add convenience, but do not make a bank inherently safer. Choose features you need rather than treating extra capacity or premium pricing as a safety measure.
