If Audio Sharing is missing, won’t connect a second pair, or connects without sound, check compatibility first. Apple’s feature works only with a supported iPhone or iPad and compatible AirPods or Beats—not just any two Bluetooth headphones. Try the fixes below in order, saving a reset for persistent pairing problems.
What Audio Sharing does—and what it doesn’t
Audio Sharing sends the same playing audio from one compatible iPhone or iPad to two compatible pairs of AirPods or Beats. Each listener can adjust their own volume. It is started from the media playback controls, not by pairing two headphones through the usual Bluetooth settings alone. It also is not a way to share audio between two phones or to route a phone call or microphone to another listener. See Apple’s Audio Sharing guide for the current iPhone and iPad workflow.
Before trying the fixes
- Charge both headphone sets; for earbuds, check that they are seated in their cases and charging.
- Keep the second set near the iPhone or iPad, and disconnect it from any other phone, tablet, computer, car, or speaker it may be using.
- Check that Bluetooth is on at Settings > Bluetooth.
- Update the iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS or iPadOS version available for that device. Apple includes these checks in its connection troubleshooting steps.
Fix 1: Check that the device and both headphones are compatible
Audio Sharing requires a supported iPhone or iPad and two compatible headphone sets. A missing Share Audio option is a reason to check compatibility and software before troubleshooting pairing. Updating or resetting cannot make an unsupported model compatible.

Check AirPods and source-device support
AirPods compatibility depends on the model and the source iPhone or iPad. Rather than assume every AirPods generation works, check Apple’s Audio Sharing guide against your devices. If either headphone set or the source device is unsupported, use a compatible pair and source device instead.
Fix 2: Start sharing from playback controls and put the second pair in discovery mode
Being nearby is not always enough: the second headphones may need to be ready to pair, particularly if they are still connected to another device. Start the sharing workflow from the iPhone or iPad that is playing the audio.

- Connect the first AirPods or Beats to the iPhone or iPad and start playing audio.
- Open Now Playing on the Lock Screen, in Control Center, or in the app’s playback controls.
- Tap the playback destination icon (it may look like AirPods, headphones, or another output symbol), then tap Share Audio.
- Bring the second headphones close to the iPhone or iPad. If prompted, put them into pairing or discovery mode and follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple describes this process in its AirPods guide and Beats guide. If the second pair does not appear, make sure it is not connected to another host and try discovery mode again.
Put AirPods into pairing mode
- AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2: Put the earbuds in the case, open the lid, and hold the setup button until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3: Open the case and double-tap its front until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Max: Hold the listening-mode button for about five seconds, until the status light flashes white.
Apple’s AirPods pairing guide has the model-specific steps. For Beats, use the discovery-mode control for that model; button procedures vary, so do not assume one sequence fits every Beats product.

Fix 3: Forget and reset the headphones, then pair again
Try this if the second set still will not connect after compatibility, charging, and discovery-mode checks. Forgetting a device removes its saved connection information; a reset is more disruptive, so use the procedure for the exact product.
AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2
- Put the AirPods in their case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If the AirPods are listed under My Devices, tap the Info button, then Forget This Device and confirm.
- Open the case and hold its setup button for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Hold the open case near the iPhone or iPad and follow the pairing instructions. Then start Audio Sharing again from the playback destination controls.
AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3
- Put the earbuds in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- Forget the AirPods under Settings > Bluetooth.
- Open the lid. Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on; double-tap again when it flashes white; then double-tap a third time when it flashes faster.
- Wait for the light to flash amber and then white. Hold the open case near the iPhone or iPad and pair again.

Beats
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings. Tap the Beats name near the top of the screen, or find it under Bluetooth.
- Tap Forget This Device, then pair the Beats again.
- If the issue continues, follow the reset instructions for that Beats model rather than using an AirPods reset sequence.
Apple’s Beats unpairing guide explains how to remove Beats from an Apple device. In some Apple-device configurations, forgetting Beats also removes them from devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

- Open Control Center and touch and hold the volume control.
- Check that both headphone sets appear as audio outputs and raise each listener’s volume slider separately.
- Confirm that the app is playing audio, then reopen the playback destination menu and select the intended headphones.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth speakers, headphones, or car audio, and test another source such as a podcast or video.
A Bluetooth connection by itself does not confirm that the playing audio is routed to both sets. Audio Sharing provides separate volume controls for the listeners, as described in Apple’s Audio Sharing guide. Check the selected outputs before playing private media, and avoid raising volume beyond a safe level while testing.

If audio keeps switching to another device
Compatible AirPods can automatically switch between Apple devices under certain account and software conditions. If audio moves to a nearby Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or another Apple device, check the routing rather than repeating the reset immediately. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Keep Audio with Headphones. Apple explains automatic switching and this setting in its switching guide.
When to contact Apple or Beats support
- A headphone set will not charge or its status light never enters pairing mode.
- A known-compatible pair still fails after forgetting, resetting, and pairing it again.
- Several compatible headphone pairs fail on the same updated iPhone or iPad.
These symptoms may point beyond a stale pairing record; provide support with the headphone models, source-device model, and software versions.
