If NameDrop does not appear or a transfer fails, start with the separate Bring Devices Together switch, the correct top-edge positioning, and Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices. Then check compatibility and AirDrop discovery settings. NameDrop is part of AirDrop, but it is meant to share new contact information—not automatically update an existing contact.
Try the quick checks first; save settings resets for last. The steps below distinguish Apple-documented instructions from practical tests that help isolate a cause.
Quick checklist
- Confirm both devices are compatible and updated.
- Unlock both iPhones and wake their screens.
- On each iPhone, check Settings > General > AirDrop > Bring Devices Together.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and turn off Airplane Mode.
- Bring the display of one iPhone within a few centimeters of the top of the other device; hold them there until the prompt appears.
- If discovery still fails, temporarily test with AirDrop set to Everyone for 10 Minutes, then restore your preferred setting.
- Restart both devices before considering a reset.
Check compatibility first
NameDrop requires an iPhone running iOS 17.1 or later. It can work between compatible iPhones, or between an iPhone and a supported Apple Watch running watchOS 10.1 or later. Apple lists Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Apple Watch Series 7 or later, and Apple Watch Ultra models as supported. See Apple’s NameDrop requirements.

Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide lists iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), as compatible with iOS 26. That is separate from NameDrop’s minimum software requirement; check the installed software and model on both devices. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide has the current list.

If NameDrop does not appear
- Enable Bring Devices Together on both iPhones. Go to Settings > General > AirDrop and turn on Bring Devices Together on each phone. This is distinct from the AirDrop receiving setting. Apple says the proximity feature is on by default, but it can be switched off. See Apple’s NameDrop instructions.
- Unlock both devices and wake the screens. Try with both iPhones unlocked and displays awake. This is a useful diagnostic to remove lock-screen variables; Apple’s gesture instructions focus on bringing the displays close together.
- Align the correct parts of the devices. Hold the display of one iPhone a few centimeters from the top of the other iPhone. For an Apple Watch, aim at the top of the watch. Do not rely on pressing the backs or bottoms together.
- Keep them together until the prompt appears. Wait for NameDrop to show on the screens. Moving the devices apart or locking the iPhone cancels an incomplete attempt, according to Apple.
- Temporarily remove bulky or magnetic accessories. Take off a thick case, wallet case, or magnetic accessory and retry. This is a practical alignment and interference test, not a guaranteed Apple-prescribed fix.
- Turn on Wi‑Fi on both iPhones. Check Settings > Wi‑Fi. Apple’s AirDrop guidance calls for Wi‑Fi on both devices; NameDrop is an AirDrop feature, so this is a relevant wireless check.
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices. Check Settings > Bluetooth. Apple likewise includes Bluetooth in its AirDrop troubleshooting guidance. See Apple’s AirDrop guide.
- Turn off Airplane Mode for the test. Disable it in Control Center, then check that Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth remain enabled. This is a basic diagnostic, not a NameDrop-specific repair.
- Check AirDrop receiving mode. On each iPhone, go to Settings > General > AirDrop. For a controlled test, choose Everyone for 10 Minutes; alternatively use Contacts Only if contact matching is correctly configured. This setting is not a substitute for Bring Devices Together. Apple documents the receiving choices in its AirDrop safety guide.
- Use Everyone for 10 Minutes only as a temporary test. If Contacts Only is the obstacle, the test may help identify a discovery issue. Apple notes that Contacts Only matching can depend on the recipient’s contact card containing the phone number or Apple Account email associated with their device. Restore your preferred receiving setting afterward; Everyone broadens discoverability during its active period.
- Bring the devices very close. AirDrop’s general range is about 10 meters (30 feet), but NameDrop is a proximity interaction. Test with devices nearly touching and correctly aligned, rather than relying on AirDrop’s maximum range. See Apple’s range and AirDrop guidance.
- Verify the second device’s model and software. For a watch attempt, confirm it is an Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 7 or later, or an Ultra model, and that it runs watchOS 10.1 or later. An older watch may not support NameDrop even if it can use other features.
- Update both devices. On iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update. Update a paired Apple Watch through its available Software Update controls as well. NameDrop’s minimum versions are iOS 17.1 and watchOS 10.1; current compatible software is a sensible way to rule out older system issues. This does not imply that a particular iOS 26 point release has a NameDrop-specific fix.
- Isolate a watch-specific problem. If NameDrop fails between an iPhone and Apple Watch, test between two compatible iPhones. If iPhone-to-iPhone works, focus on watch model, watchOS, pairing, and watch-specific operation. If both tests fail, return to iPhone settings and wireless discovery. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a repair guarantee.
If NameDrop appears but the card is wrong or sharing does not finish
- Review My Card. Open Contacts, tap My Card, then Edit. Check your name, phone numbers, email addresses, and Contact Poster details, and save any corrections. NameDrop uses the information selected from your card.
- Choose the intended action. Tap Share to send your contact card and receive the other person’s, or Receive Only to receive theirs without sending yours. NameDrop is for sharing new contact information; it does not automatically update an existing contact entry. If you expected an update, save or edit the contact yourself after receiving the new details.
- Review the fields before saving. On the sharing screen, tap the disclosure arrow, select the phone number or email address you want to share, then tap Save. NameDrop does not send the entire Contacts entry: Apple says it shares your name, selected number or email, and Contact Poster information. Other fields such as a home address or birthday are not shared through NameDrop. Apple notes that chosen fields can become the defaults for the next use. See Apple’s explanation of NameDrop data.
If it still fails
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhones; if testing with a watch, restart it too. Then retry the close-range gesture. Apple recommends restarting as part of AirDrop troubleshooting, and it is a low-risk step before resetting settings.
- Reset Network Settings only after simpler checks fail. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and resets network configuration, but does not erase photos, apps, messages, contacts, or documents. You will need to reconnect to Wi‑Fi and may need to reconfigure network services. Apple’s reset guide explains the effects.
- Consider Reset All Settings only if broader settings appear affected. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This does not erase personal content, but it returns many preferences to defaults and can reset Wi‑Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, privacy and location settings, VPN configurations, Apple Pay cards, and other settings. It is not the same as Erase All Content and Settings, which deletes personal content and is not a routine NameDrop fix. See Apple’s Reset All Settings guidance.
- Contact Apple Support or arrange service if the fault persists. Escalate if Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth also fails elsewhere, AirDrop cannot discover nearby Apple devices, one iPhone consistently fails while comparable devices work, or the phone has physical or liquid damage. If the iPhone is managed by work or school and settings are unavailable, contact the administrator rather than removing a profile without authorization. Configuration profiles and mobile-device management can affect settings; Apple discusses these qualifications in its reset guidance.
Use the symptom to narrow the cause
- No prompt at all: Check Bring Devices Together, alignment, unlocked screens, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth, receiving mode, and compatibility.
- Prompt appears, but transfer does not complete: Keep devices together, check that neither device locks, and try Receive Only to isolate the sending direction.
- Only one person cannot receive: Check that person’s compatibility, Bring Devices Together setting, AirDrop mode, and (for Contacts Only) contact matching. NameDrop does not update an existing card automatically.
- iPhone works with another iPhone but not the watch: Recheck watch model, watchOS, pairing, and watch operation.
- AirDrop also fails: Treat it as a broader discovery or wireless issue. Test an AirDrop photo or another nearby device, then restart and, if needed, reset network settings.
Do not assume that a VPN toggle, cellular setting, Apple Account sign-out, or third-party “cleaner” app will repair NameDrop. The useful path is to isolate compatibility, proximity, AirDrop discovery, contact-card selection, and then system settings.
