The 11th-generation iPad did not launch in 2024. Rumors that year concerned Apple’s next entry-level tablet, which ultimately arrived as the iPad (A16). Apple announced it on March 4, 2025, and made it available March 12. The final model has an A16 chip and 128GB of starting storage—not the unconfirmed A17 or A18 configurations discussed before launch.
Were the 2024 iPad 11th-generation leaks real?
There were genuine reports and speculation in 2024 about a successor to the 10th-generation base iPad. That does not mean Apple confirmed an 11th-generation iPad for release that year. The product did materialize, but in March 2025.
Apple calls the model iPad (A16) or iPad 11-inch (A16); “11th-generation iPad” and “iPad 11” are common shorthand. Apple lists its introduction year as 2025 in its technical specifications. The distinction matters: a 2024 article can accurately discuss rumors about the future iPad, but should not describe it as a confirmed 2024 product.

The broad prediction of a successor with a newer A-series processor proved right. Specific chip and launch-date predictions did not. The shipped tablet uses A16, so pre-launch A17 or A18 claims should remain labeled as speculation rather than being repeated as its specifications.

Confirmed iPad (A16) specifications
Apple’s official specifications describe an 11-inch-class tablet. The screen measures 10.86 inches diagonally as a rectangle; “11-inch” is Apple’s product-size label.

The display has True Tone and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, but it is not a ProMotion high-refresh-rate display. It is also not an OLED or mini-LED panel, and Apple does not describe it as a laminated display. The A16 is a capable step up from the prior base iPad’s A14, but this is not an M-series iPad.

What changed—and what did not—from the 10th-generation iPad?
The clearest practical change is the move to A16 and a 128GB starting capacity. That larger entry-level storage allotment gives users more room for apps, games, photos and downloaded media than a low-capacity configuration would. The landscape front camera and Center Stage are useful for video calls: when supported, Center Stage adjusts the view to keep people in frame.
The overall proposition remains that of a mainstream tablet rather than a major redesign or a Pro-class workstation. The screen remains a conventional LCD, and the device does not gain an M-series chip or ProMotion. Buyers choosing between this model and a discounted 10th-generation iPad should weigh the older model’s price against the A16, the 128GB minimum and the newer front-camera experience.

Apple Pencil and keyboard compatibility
The iPad (A16) supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the first-generation Apple Pencil. The first-generation Pencil uses an older charging and pairing arrangement; a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter may be needed. Apple does not list Apple Pencil Pro as compatible, so do not assume that an Apple Pencil from a different iPad tier will work.
Apple’s Magic Keyboard Folio is the relevant keyboard option for a laptop-style setup. A keyboard and Pencil can add meaningful cost and bulk, so include accessories in the total budget rather than judging value by the tablet alone.

Does the A16 iPad support Apple Intelligence?
Do not treat the A16 chip or its Neural Engine as proof that every Apple Intelligence feature is available. Processor performance, operating-system features and Apple Intelligence compatibility are separate questions. Eligibility can depend on the specific iPad model, installed iPadOS version, language and region; check Apple’s current compatibility information before buying for a particular feature. The specifications cited here establish the hardware, not a blanket promise of AI-feature support.
Who should consider it?
- Students and families: A 128GB starting configuration, USB-C and Pencil support suit notes, school apps, browsing and shared household use.
- Everyday tablet users: It is a sensible fit for streaming, reading, web browsing, video calls and light creative work.
- People who take calls on an iPad: The landscape front camera and Center Stage are useful for video meetings and classes.
- Buyers comparing cellular: Choose Wi-Fi + Cellular only if built-in mobile data is worth the added hardware and recurring plan cost. Compare that with tethering to a phone; eSIM activation, bands and availability depend on country and carrier.
When another iPad may be a better fit
- Choose an iPad Air instead if demanding creative apps, heavier multitasking or an M-series chip matter enough to justify the price difference. For basic browsing, media and notes, that extra capability may go unused.
- Consider iPad mini if compact size and one-handed portability matter more than a large typing area or split-screen workspace.
- Consider a discounted 10th-generation iPad if the savings are substantial and you can accept its older A14 chip and lower starting storage. Compare exact storage and condition, not just the generation name.
- Look above the base iPad tier if you require a high-refresh-rate display, more advanced display technology or an M-series processor. The iPad (A16) is not an 11-inch iPad Pro.
Bottom line
The 2024 iPad 11th-generation story was a rumor story, not a confirmed launch. The real product arrived in March 2025 as the iPad (A16), with A16 performance, 128GB starting storage and a familiar 11-inch-class LCD design. It is a strong general-purpose option, but buyers should not mistake it for an iPad Air or Pro—or assume that A16 automatically unlocks Apple Intelligence.
