For most Windows users, Microsoft Defender is a strong no-extra-cost starting point. If you want a paid suite for several devices, compare Bitdefender, Norton, McAfee and F-Secure by platform coverage, renewal terms and the extras you will actually use—not by feature count alone. On Android, Google Play Protect is the built-in baseline; several third-party apps also scored well in recent lab tests. On iPhone and iPad, “antivirus” apps generally focus on phishing, scams, identity alerts and network privacy rather than system-wide virus scans.
There is no single best antivirus for everyone. This guide groups 20 consumer products and services by their likely fit, distinguishes independent test results from product features, and explains what antivirus can—and cannot—do. Recommendations and availability can vary by country; subscription terms and prices change, so check the vendor’s official page before buying.
How to choose: protection first, extras second
Antivirus is one layer of security, not a guarantee. A useful choice balances independent protection results, false alarms, performance, ease of use, platform support, privacy practices and the price after any introductory offer ends. A VPN, password manager, cloud backup or identity-monitoring service may add value, but those features do not prove that the antivirus engine blocks more malware.
Independent tests provide evidence for a particular product version, platform and test period; they are not permanent guarantees. In AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Windows real-world protection test, Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Microsoft Defender, Norton and TotalAV received Advanced+. The test looks at whether real-world threats compromise a system and also considers false positives. That result supports a Windows protection comparison; it does not establish how the same brand performs on iOS or Android.

For Android, AV-TEST’s May 2026 evaluation awarded 6/6/6 for protection, performance and usability to Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton and Sophos. Google Play Protect scored 5.5/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 5/6 for usability. AV-TEST scores each of three categories out of six; a top score is a result under defined test conditions, not immunity from phishing, stolen passwords or unsafe sideloaded apps. AV-Comparatives’ 2026 Android review used 3,156 malicious apps and 500 clean apps and considered usability, false positives, anti-theft features and battery impact.
Use these results as one input alongside the product’s actual features and terms. A Windows result does not transfer to Mac, Android or iPhone, and a product that blocks more threats can still frustrate users if it wrongly blocks legitimate files.
20 antivirus products and apps worth comparing
This is a shortlist organized by practical fit, not a claim that all 20 are equally strong or interchangeable. A few entries are built-in baselines or mobile-focused apps rather than full desktop suites. Platform functions differ by plan and operating system; verify the exact edition before subscribing. No current prices are quoted here because promotional and renewal prices change frequently and the available evidence does not establish current official pricing.

Microsoft Defender Antivirus — best free Windows starting point
Defender is integrated with Windows Security and receives updates through Microsoft. It received Advanced+ in the cited 2026 AV-Comparatives Windows test. For ordinary Windows use, many people can start with it and spend effort instead on software updates, multifactor authentication and backups. Bitdefender Total Security — paid all-rounder to compare
A strong candidate when you want a paid multi-device suite and value broad security features. Bitdefender received Advanced+ in the cited Windows test and its Android app earned 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 evaluation. Norton 360 Deluxe — families seeking a bundle
Norton is worth comparing if you want a single subscription with security and additional privacy or identity-related features. It earned Advanced+ in the cited Windows test; Norton’s Android app earned 6/6/6 in the May 2026 AV-TEST evaluation. McAfee Total Protection — multi-device and family features
McAfee is a candidate for households that value account-level management and bundled features across devices. Its Android app received 6/6/6 in the cited AV-TEST evaluation. Avast One or Avast Free Antivirus — free-to-paid choice
Avast provides free and paid consumer options and received Advanced+ in the cited Windows test; its Android app scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST. Free editions may include prompts to upgrade, and feature availability varies. Review privacy disclosures and the exact paid-plan terms as well as protection results. Avast.

AVG AntiVirus Free — another Windows free option
AVG is a free alternative to compare with Defender and Avast. It earned Advanced+ in the cited Windows test and 6/6/6 for Android in AV-TEST. Avast and AVG share corporate ownership, so they are not wholly independent company choices; compare their interface, settings and terms rather than treating them as unrelated vendors. AVG.

ESET is a candidate for users who prefer a focused product with configurable controls over a large bundle of identity and backup services. F-Secure offers paid consumer plans that may suit users seeking security and privacy features in one subscription. Its Android app scored 6/6/6 in the May 2026 AV-TEST evaluation. Trend Micro Internet Security — web and phishing emphasis
Compare Trend Micro if protection against malicious sites and online scams is a priority. Evaluate how its browser and web features work with your browsers and devices, and check independent results for the specific platform and current test period rather than assuming a Windows product’s performance carries over. Malwarebytes Premium — malware cleanup and additional protection
Malwarebytes is a candidate for people interested in malware cleanup and scam-related protection. Check its current real-time protection features and compatibility with any other security software. Panda’s tiered offerings make it a candidate if you want to compare a free starting point with paid extras. Check which features are restricted to higher tiers, which platforms are covered, and what the subscription renews at. TotalAV — compare carefully on terms and evidence
TotalAV received Advanced+ in AV-Comparatives’ cited Windows test, making it relevant to a protection shortlist. Before buying, inspect the specific plan, introductory versus renewal pricing, auto-renewal settings and feature differences. Total Defense — lower-profile consumer alternative
Total Defense is another consumer product to investigate if it is available in your market. Its prominence and independent-test evidence are more limited in the sources cited here, so compare current platform support and transparent subscription terms before relying on it. Total Defense.

VIPRE Advanced Security — check current availability
VIPRE is a consumer security candidate, particularly for a Windows-focused comparison. Confirm that the current home product is available where you live and check for current independent testing; the evidence here does not support a broad cross-platform performance claim. VIPRE.

G DATA may suit users comparing feature-focused suites in markets where its consumer edition is sold. Exact platform coverage and availability vary, so verify the edition and local terms instead of assuming the product has identical features everywhere. G DATA.

Kaspersky Standard or Premium — weigh trust and availability as well as tests
Kaspersky received Advanced+ in the cited AV-Comparatives Windows test and its Android app scored 6/6/6 in AV-TEST. Those are technical test results, not a resolution of regulatory, geopolitical, trust, payment or availability concerns. Sophos Home — verify the consumer offering
Sophos may appeal to users familiar with its security products or management approach, but confirm the current consumer plan and availability before treating it as a direct alternative to mainstream home suites. Sophos also appears in Android testing; that does not establish the status or features of a home desktop plan. Sophos Home.

Avira Free Security or Prime — free and paid tiers
Avira is a candidate if you want to compare a free option with a broader paid suite. Its Android app received 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 test. Review which privacy or utility features are included in the edition you are considering and whether upgrade prompts or subscriptions suit you. Avira.

Google Play Protect — built-in Android baseline
Play Protect is Android’s built-in Google Play app-scanning service and an important free baseline, not a conventional paid desktop-style antivirus suite. It scored 5.5/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 5/6 for usability in AV-TEST’s May 2026 Android evaluation. It does not make phishing, sideloading or unsafe permissions risk-free. Bitdefender Mobile Security or Sophos Intercept X for Mobile — Android-focused options
For a dedicated Android app, compare either of these with Play Protect and with your existing suite. Both Bitdefender and Sophos received 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2026 Android evaluation. Their scores do not mean either can stop every social-engineering attack or credential theft. Which kind of antivirus is right for you?
- One Windows PC, no need for extras: Start with Microsoft Defender and Windows Security. The cited Advanced+ result supports it as a credible baseline. Add a paid product only for a specific need.
- A household with mixed devices: Compare Bitdefender, Norton, McAfee and F-Secure on the exact number of devices, platform-specific tools and the renewal total. A single license may simplify management, but its features can differ on each operating system.
- Free protection: Compare Defender, Avast Free, AVG and Avira on usability and upgrade prompts. For Android, keep Play Protect enabled. Free software can be legitimate, but read its privacy terms and install only from the official vendor or app store.
- Android: Play Protect is a reasonable built-in baseline. A dedicated app may add web protection, privacy checks or anti-theft functions. The AV-TEST results above provide a current comparison point, not a guarantee.
- iPhone or iPad: Choose an app for the specific function you need—such as malicious-link warnings, scam alerts, a VPN or breach monitoring. Apple’s platform restrictions mean these apps should not be described as traditional system-wide malware scanners. See Apple Platform Security.
- Configurable controls: Consider ESET, but verify the precise edition and platform support.
- Malware cleanup or a second opinion: Malwarebytes may be useful, but check compatibility and avoid stacking real-time products without a reason.
- Privacy-conscious buying: Compare the privacy policy, telemetry, permissions, jurisdiction, data handling and available features. Brand reputation alone is not enough to prove that a product is the most private.
Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone protection are different
Windows
Look for real-time malware protection, ransomware and exploit defenses, malicious-download and browser protection, and manageable alerts. A gamer or creator should also consider performance, compatibility with work software and whether the product interrupts full-screen tasks. Do not infer that a suite is lightweight without current performance evidence.

macOS
Mac security products can scan for Mac malware, flag malicious downloads and websites, and detect Windows malware in files that may be shared with others. Macs are not immune to malware or phishing. Keep macOS and browsers updated, and judge any antivirus by its actual macOS features rather than the full Windows feature list.
Android
Android apps may scan installed or downloaded applications, block malicious websites, review permissions or provide anti-theft tools. Sideloaded apps, dangerous accessibility permissions, fake support messages and phishing links remain risks. Lab results cover defined samples and conditions, not every app or scam.
iOS and iPadOS
On Apple mobile devices, security apps usually focus on web and phishing protection, scam detection, network warnings, VPN, identity alerts or account-security guidance. They generally cannot scan every app and file in the manner a Windows antivirus can. Be cautious of claims that an iPhone app offers unrestricted, deep virus scanning.

Free antivirus versus paid antivirus

A paid plan does not necessarily detect basic malware dramatically better than a strong free option. Its extra value may be convenience, broader coverage, support or bundled services. Free editions can have ads, upgrade prompts, restricted device counts or fewer recovery tools. Paid suites can bring auto-renewal, notification overhead and features that are not worth the added cost to you.
Check subscription terms before paying
Promotional prices are not a reliable guide to long-term cost. Before checkout, confirm:
- Whether the displayed amount is an introductory offer, and what the renewal costs.
- The subscription length, device limit and supported operating systems.
- Whether auto-renewal is enabled and how to cancel it.
- Whether a free trial converts to a paid plan, and whether a refund period applies.
- Whether VPN, identity monitoring, backup, parental controls or support are included in your country and edition.
- Whether you are buying from the vendor or a retailer, and which party handles billing and cancellation.
Use the official vendor product page linked above to verify current terms. Prices and feature availability can vary by geography and time; no quoted retailer promotion should be mistaken for a stable annual price.
What antivirus cannot do
Antivirus cannot guarantee protection from every new threat, reverse every ransomware attack, make a user-approved malicious action safe, prevent every account takeover, or identify every scam. It cannot replace backups, multifactor authentication, software updates or careful handling of links, attachments, QR codes and installers. It also cannot make pirated software safe or indefinitely protect an unsupported, unpatched operating system.

Keep your operating system and browser current, use unique passwords and multifactor authentication, and keep a separate backup of important files. These measures address risks an antivirus cannot reliably fix.

Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Running two real-time antivirus products: Choose one primary product. Installing another may disable or alter Defender’s active protection, duplicate alerts or cause conflicts and slowdowns. Microsoft explains its built-in protections in Windows Security.
- Buying by feature count: A long list of VPN, cleanup and identity features does not establish stronger malware protection. Choose features you will use.
- Ignoring false positives: A security tool that blocks legitimate files can disrupt work. Consider usability and false-positive testing as well as protection.
- Assuming every platform gets the same product: Check each operating system’s feature list. An iOS app is not a Windows-style scanner, and a Windows lab result is not an Android result.
- Forgetting renewal: Record the renewal date and amount or turn off auto-renewal if you do not want it. Reassess the subscription before it renews.
