2 Ways to Install the Zoom Client on Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04 LTS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Ubuntu Desktop, the best-supported way to install Zoom is to download Zoom’s Ubuntu/Debian .deb package from the official Linux Download Center. If you prefer a one-command install with Snap-managed refreshes, install the zoom-client package from the Snap Store instead. Both methods work on typical 64-bit Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat) and 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish) systems, but the packages have different update and permission models.

Check your Ubuntu release and architecture

This guide targets Ubuntu Desktop with a graphical session, speakers, a microphone and, for video meetings, a webcam. Zoom’s Linux requirements include Ubuntu, a 32-bit or 64-bit processor (64-bit is recommended for the full ecosystem) and OpenGL 2.0 or later. Check your system before downloading:

lsb_release -ds
dpkg --print-architecture
uname -m

Typical results are Ubuntu 24.04.x LTS or Ubuntu 22.04.x LTS with amd64 and x86_64. “AMD64” also includes 64-bit Intel processors. An arm64/aarch64 computer should not use an AMD64 package unless Zoom explicitly provides a compatible native build. A 32-bit installation is not the recommended route for the complete Zoom client.

Zoom’s current requirements are documented at Zoom’s Linux system-requirements page. Ubuntu maintains documentation for both LTS releases at help.ubuntu.com.

Method 1: Install Zoom’s official Ubuntu/Debian DEB

This is the primary method when you want the vendor-distributed Ubuntu/Debian application. Use Zoom’s Download Center rather than an old blog link, random mirror or unverified PPA.

Download the current package

  1. Open https://zoom.us/download?os=linux.
  2. Choose Ubuntu as the Linux type and download the .deb file.
  3. Keep the filename shown by the download; it may contain a version number and can change over time.

Graphical installation

  1. Open Files and enter Downloads.
  2. Double-click the downloaded .deb file.
  3. Open it with Ubuntu App Center or the available package installer, then select Install.
  4. Authenticate with your administrator password.
  5. Open the application grid and search for Zoom or Zoom Workplace.

App Center labels and file associations vary between Ubuntu releases and desktop flavors. If the file does not open graphically, install GDebi and use its context-menu installer:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install gdebi

Right-click the downloaded file, choose Open With GDebi, then select Install Package. Ubuntu notes that downloaded third-party DEB applications have broad, unrestricted system access; see its DEB and Snap guidance.

Terminal installation

Use apt with a local path so dependencies can be resolved:

cd ~/Downloads
ls -lh *.deb
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ./ACTUAL-ZOOM-FILENAME.deb

Replace ACTUAL-ZOOM-FILENAME.deb with the exact name displayed by ls. The ./ is important: without it, apt searches configured repositories instead of installing your downloaded file. For a filename containing spaces, quote it:

sudo apt install "./Zoom package name.deb"

Zoom documents this DEB workflow at KB0063458. Prefer apt install ./file.deb over dpkg -i; dpkg does not resolve dependencies in the same way.

Launch and verify the DEB installation

Start Zoom from the application menu, or try:

zoom

To verify the package and installed version:

apt policy zoom
dpkg -l | grep zoom

On first launch, sign in, or join without signing in when the meeting host allows it. In Zoom, use Settings → Audio and Settings → Video to test your microphone, speakers and camera.

Update or remove the DEB

Zoom’s documented Linux workflow is to download a newer DEB and install it again:

sudo apt install ./NEW-ZOOM-FILENAME.deb

This normally replaces the installed version. Do not assume the downloaded DEB configures an automatic Zoom update repository.

Remove it with:

sudo apt remove zoom
sudo apt autoremove

The second command removes unused dependencies; it does not intentionally erase your personal Zoom configuration.

Method 2: Install Zoom with Snap

Snap is convenient if you want a short command and Snap-managed refreshes. The Snap Store listing provides the package name and command; check its current publisher and permissions on the listing rather than assuming it is maintained directly by Zoom.

Install the Snap

Check whether Snap is available:

snap version

If the command is missing:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd

Then install the package listed at snapcraft.io/zoom-client:

sudo snap install zoom-client

Launch it from the application menu or with:

snap run zoom-client

Confirm it is installed:

snap list zoom-client

Update or remove the Snap

Snaps normally refresh automatically under Snap’s policy. To request a refresh or view pending updates:

sudo snap refresh zoom-client
snap refresh --list

Remove the Snap with:

sudo snap remove zoom-client

Ubuntu generally sandboxes Snaps and manages access through interfaces. Inspect this package’s connections with:

snap connections zoom-client

Which installation should you choose?

Consideration Zoom DEB Snap
Source Downloaded from Zoom’s Linux Download Center Package hosted in the Snap Store; verify the current publisher
Best fit Users wanting the vendor’s Ubuntu/Debian build Users prioritizing simple installation and managed refreshes
Updates Download and install each newer DEB Snap-managed refreshes, with timing controlled by Snap
System access Broad access typical of a downloaded DEB Generally sandboxed through Snap interfaces
Package name zoom zoom-client
Main trade-off Manual update workflow Publisher, confinement and hardware-access behavior require checking

Install only one unless you have a specific reason to keep both. They are separate packages and can create duplicate menu entries or uncertainty about which client is launching.

Troubleshooting installation and startup

The filename or path is wrong

Use the actual downloaded name:

cd ~/Downloads
ls *.deb
sudo apt install ./ACTUAL-FILENAME.deb

An error such as Unsupported file ./...deb given on commandline usually means the file is not in the current directory or the name was mistyped. Shell Tab completion can avoid typing errors.

Dependencies are missing

Let apt report and resolve dependencies first:

sudo apt update
sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt install ./ACTUAL-FILENAME.deb

Zoom’s installation notes mention libraries related to GTK/GLib, X11, PulseAudio, SQLite, GStreamer and input support. Do not preinstall an old dependency list unless apt identifies a specific missing package.

An earlier dpkg operation was interrupted

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt --fix-broken install
sudo apt install ./ACTUAL-FILENAME.deb

“Could not get lock” appears

Ubuntu App Center, Software Updater or another package operation is using the package database. Wait for it to finish and retry; do not delete lock files manually.

sudo apt install zoom says the package cannot be found

That command searches configured repositories. A downloaded DEB needs its local path:

sudo apt install ./zoom_amd64.deb

Zoom does not appear in the application menu

Confirm the installation:

dpkg -l | grep zoom
which zoom

For Snap, use:

snap list zoom-client
snap run zoom-client

If it launches from the terminal but not the menu, log out and back in, then search for Zoom Workplace as well as Zoom. A reboot is not automatically required.

Camera, microphone or screen sharing fails

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and check camera and microphone access.
  2. Close other applications that may be using the device.
  3. In Zoom, test devices under Settings → Audio and Settings → Video.
  4. Test the hardware in Ubuntu’s sound settings or a webcam application.
  5. For Snap, inspect snap connections zoom-client.
  6. If screen sharing is the problem, check whether your Wayland session affects the available sharing path.

Sandboxing can produce different hardware, file and screen-sharing behavior from a DEB installation. Ubuntu explains the distinction in its package-format documentation.

The architecture does not match

Run:

dpkg --print-architecture
uname -m
  • amd64/x86_64: use the 64-bit AMD64 DEB.
  • arm64/aarch64: do not assume the AMD64 download is compatible; Zoom’s standard download page does not establish a native ARM64 Ubuntu build.
  • i386/i686: the 32-bit client is not the recommended full-featured path.

Do not add an unofficial Zoom repository

Older tutorials may suggest a PPA or a hard-coded historical Zoom version. Neither is necessary for the two methods above. Ubuntu warns that third-party repositories grant their maintainers significant access to the system; review its repository guidance before adding any one.

When the browser is enough

You may be able to join a meeting in a supported browser without installing a desktop client. That can be sufficient for occasional attendees, while the installed application is more useful for desktop integration and client settings. The host’s meeting configuration and the browser’s feature support determine what is available.
