Netflix’s available US catalog evidence supports two clear picks—not a verified list of ten: Apostle and The Ritual. Both make a group’s belief system part of the danger, but they deliver very different scares: Apostle is graphic religious-cult horror, while The Ritual is wilderness folk horror with a supernatural presence. Netflix availability varies by country and changes over time, so check each title in your account before pressing play.
What counts as a cult-horror movie?
For this list, a group, commune, secret society, or coercive belief system has to be a major source of danger. A film does not qualify merely because it is supernatural, religious, or considered a “cult classic.” Netflix’s Cult Horror Movies category uses “cult” in the fan-following sense; its description refers to films with a passionate following. That label alone does not mean a movie is about a cult.

The dread comes from the combination of physical confinement and institutional power. The community controls the setting, and its public rituals make belief feel like a tool for enforcing obedience. The film’s violence is graphic, so this is a poor choice if you want suspense without disturbing imagery. It suits viewers looking for an uncompromising, literal cult narrative rather than subtle psychological unease.

Unlike Apostle, The Ritual builds much of its fear from the landscape and the friends’ strained relationships. The woods feel isolating, while guilt and grief add a psychological edge to the supernatural threat. It is a strong starting point for viewers who prefer atmosphere and creature mythology to sustained graphic violence, though it includes disturbing imagery and violence.

Which should you watch?
- For the more direct cult story: Choose Apostle. Its isolated religious community is the central threat.
- For folk horror and atmosphere: Choose The Ritual. Its wilderness setting and supernatural belief system create a slower, more creature-focused scare.
- For maximum graphic intensity: Apostle is the harsher pick.
- For a less conventional cult setup: The Ritual is the better fit, but it is folk horror—not a realistic portrait of a modern commune.
Why this is not a list of ten
Netflix catalogs are country-specific and can change without notice. The available evidence supports these two Netflix US candidates, but does not verify ten titles individually.
