Bitwarden is a practical place to start if you want a free individual tier and open-source positioning; Proton Pass is another subscription option; Dashlane merits a look for business credential protection; and KeePassXC may suit readers seeking a desktop password manager. Compare the devices you use, sharing and recovery needs, plan limits, and migration behavior before choosing—there is no evidence-supported single best replacement for everyone.
Which 1Password alternative should you consider?
Use this shortlist to decide what to investigate, not as a universal ranking. Product features, pricing, and availability can change, and vendor comparisons describe their own products.
| Option | Why it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden | Its official page lists an always-free individual option as well as paid individual, family, and business plans. It also presents open-source positioning and flexible deployment. | Check current regional pricing, plan limits, device and browser support, and whether the sharing and administration features you need are included. Bitwarden plans and comparison |
| Proton Pass | A subscription alternative worth comparing if you are already considering Proton services or want to evaluate another provider. | Consult Proton’s current plan table for exact prices and features; the available product information does not establish them here. Proton Pass pricing |
| Dashlane | Especially relevant to readers assessing business credential protection. Dashlane’s own comparison highlights password and passkey management, dark-web monitoring, SSO/SCIM, and a zero-knowledge vault, and promotes browser-level risk and phishing protection for business. | These are Dashlane’s descriptions, not independent test results. Its comparison says its feature data reflect internal research on public features as of April 2026 and warns that features, prices, and availability can change. Dashlane’s comparison with 1Password |
| KeePassXC | Consider it if you are looking for a desktop password manager. | The project’s official site does not establish a detailed comparison here for mobile access, synchronization, or collaboration. Confirm those requirements before selecting it. KeePassXC official site |
Choose by the reason you are switching
If price or a free tier matters most
Bitwarden’s official plans page lists an always-free individual option. It displays Premium at $1.65 per month billed annually ($19.80 for the year) and Families at $3.99 per month billed annually ($47.88 for the year). Those are vendor-published USD prices, billed annually and excluding taxes; they can change, so verify the live page and plan limits before deciding. See Bitwarden’s current plans.
Do not compare a free tier with a paid subscription by headline price alone. Check any device or item limits and whether the feature you rely on—such as family sharing or organization controls—is included in that tier. For Proton Pass, use its official pricing page rather than relying on third-party snippets for current plan details: Proton Pass pricing.

If family or team sharing matters
List who needs access, what should be shared, who will administer it, and how access should be restored if someone loses a device or leaves. For a team, determine whether organization ownership and administrator controls meet your needs; Bitwarden emphasizes these points in its own business comparison. Review Bitwarden’s comparison.
Do not assume that a product’s personal plan provides the same sharing, recovery, or administration model as its family or business plans. Confirm the relevant tier and its current terms directly with the provider.

If business credential protection matters
Dashlane is worth evaluating for organizations because its comparison discusses SSO/SCIM, password and passkey management, dark-web monitoring, and browser-level risk and phishing protection. Treat these as vendor-described capabilities, then verify the controls, deployment requirements, and plan availability that apply to your organization. Dashlane says its comparison is based on internal research into public features as of April 2026; it also notes that features, pricing, and availability may change. Read Dashlane’s comparison.
If privacy, security transparency, or control matters
Compare the actual security model, available audit disclosures, open-source availability, hosting choices, multi-factor authentication support, and organization controls. A vendor’s security language is not, by itself, evidence that it is more secure than another service. Match the controls you can verify to your own needs rather than relying on a blanket “most secure” claim.

If you want a desktop-focused option
KeePassXC is a project to investigate for desktop password management. Before choosing it, establish how it will meet your own requirements for mobile access, syncing, and collaboration; the official project information reviewed here does not settle those questions. Visit the KeePassXC site.
Check devices, browsers, and account recovery before deciding
Make a list of the operating systems, phones, tablets, and browsers used by everyone who will share the vault. Confirm support for each one on the candidate’s current documentation rather than inferring platform parity from a general product overview.

Both 1Password and Bitwarden publish import guidance, but that does not establish universal compatibility for every item type or vault structure. Test a small, representative export before deleting or abandoning the original vault.

- Make a small test export. Include representative entries rather than starting with the entire vault. Handle any export file securely because it may contain readable credentials.
- Inspect what arrived. Check item categories, attachments, custom fields, passkeys, and shared-vault structure. Do not assume that all data or relationships transferred correctly.
- Verify access in the new manager. Confirm that important entries are present and usable on the devices and browsers you depend on, and that sharing works for the intended people.
- Only then complete the migration. Keep the existing vault available until you have checked the imported data and confirmed the new setup meets your needs.
Is a security key a 1Password alternative?
No. A security key adds a physical authentication method to supported accounts; it does not replace the password manager. Yubico lists the YubiKey 5 NFC with USB-A and NFC connectivity and names 1Password and Bitwarden Premium among its supported services. Check that the connector fits your devices and that your account settings support the key before buying or relying on it. Yubico’s YubiKey 5 NFC listing.
