The Run dialog can open Windows diagnostics, printer tools, configuration panels and other utilities without a trip through Settings. But the 19 commands in HTMD Blog’s July 2024 list are not all equally current: some remain handy, some are specialist tools, and others are legacy, deprecated or dependent on hardware and Windows components.
Press Windows + R, enter a command and press Enter. Run does not grant administrator rights; a tool may open but still require elevation for privileged changes. Availability and behavior can vary by Windows edition, build, policy and installed components.
Quick reference: the 19 commands
Use the status labels as a guide, not a guarantee that every command is present on every Windows 10 or 11 PC. Save work before starting anything that may restart the computer, and use the modern alternative when a legacy utility is unavailable.

Run commands most people are likeliest to need
Check reliability history: perfmon /rel
Open Run with Windows + R, enter perfmon /rel and press Enter. Reliability Monitor shows a timeline of events such as application failures and some update or hardware-related problems. Look for repeated failures or several problems beginning around the same date, then compare that timing with recent driver, app or Windows changes. The view is a diagnostic clue, not a diagnosis or repair.

Run a memory check: mdsched
- Enter
mdschedin Run. - Choose Restart now and check for problems or Check for problems the next time I start my computer.
- Save open work before selecting an immediate restart; the test runs outside the normal desktop session.
The test can report memory errors, but a clean result cannot prove that RAM, the memory controller, motherboard or configuration is fault-free in every circumstance. If symptoms continue, further testing may be needed. You can also search Start for Windows Memory Diagnostic to launch the same tool. Edit environment variables: use the safer fallback if needed
The listed shortcut is rundll32.exe sysdm.cpl,EditEnvironmentVariables. Because this calls a specific entry point through rundll32, behavior should not be assumed identical on every build. If it fails, run sysdm.cpl, choose Advanced, then Environment Variables.

PATHcan stop commands or applications from being found. - Already-open applications may need to be closed and reopened before they see a changed value.
Microsoft cautions that rundll32 is for DLL functions specifically designed to be called that way; it is not a universal DLL launcher. See Microsoft’s rundll32 documentation.

Preview a font: fontview
For example, enter fontview arial.ttf. If Windows cannot resolve the font by name, supply its full path, such as fontview "C:UsersPublicDownloadsExample Font.ttf". A missing file or incorrect path means there is nothing to preview.

Install a standalone update: wusa
Use Windows Update for normal servicing. wusa is for compatible standalone update packages, not every update or every Windows Update problem. Confirm that the package matches the PC’s architecture and Windows version and meets its prerequisites; installation may require elevation. Do not install packages from untrusted sources.
Printer and scanner tools
printui relates to printer configuration, while Microsoft documents the more explicit PrintUIEntry form rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry for printer configuration and scripting. Exact tasks require suitable arguments; merely opening an entry point does not fix a printer. For everyday setup, Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners is usually easier to discover.

printbrmui is for printer migration, not routine troubleshooting. Before exporting or importing, document the printer queues, drivers, ports and relevant permissions, then verify each after the move. wiaacmgr starts a scanner workflow only when a compatible, recognized scanner and driver are available. If it reports that no scanner is installed, check the connection and driver, or use Windows Scan or the manufacturer’s app.

Specialist and legacy entries
azman.msc: Authorization Manager is relevant to particular applications and authorization stores, not ordinary account or Windows security settings.dpapimig: A specialized DPAPI migration utility. Because DPAPI is connected to protected user data and credentials, do not use it as a general application-launch fix or run it without a specific migration plan.odbcconf: A specialist ODBC configuration utility. For routine data-source management, use the appropriate ODBC Data Sources interface and ensure you choose the relevant 32-bit or 64-bit context for the application.wmimgmt.msc: Opens WMI administration. It may help an IT professional investigate management configuration, but casual changes can complicate monitoring and system management.lpksetup: Opens an older language-pack installation/removal workflow where available. Current language options are generally managed in Settings; deployment scenarios can use Windows language servicing methods. See Microsoft’s language configuration guidance.isoburn: Opens the disc-image burning tool where present. It is of little use without a compatible optical drive and writable disc.tabtip: An older touch-input component shortcut whose availability varies. The commands bootim and C:WindowsSystem32rundll32.exe sysdm.cpl,EditUserProfiles need build-specific verification before being treated as dependable shortcuts. For recovery, use the documented Settings → System → Recovery path. For user-profile options, run sysdm.cpl and inspect System Properties rather than relying on an uncertain entry point.
If a command fails
- “Not recognized” or no result: Check spelling first—particularly
lpksetup, notipksetup. The utility may be absent from the edition, removed, blocked by policy or dependent on an optional component. Prefer the corresponding Settings or Control Panel route instead of downloading an executable from a third-party site. - Access denied: Run does not elevate. If the task genuinely requires admin rights, use an elevated Windows Terminal or another administrator-approved route; do not elevate an unfamiliar command just to see if it works.
- The tool opens but cannot complete the task: Check for missing hardware or drivers, disabled services, incomplete parameters, or an operation that requires elevation.
- Different screen than expected: Windows edition, build and legacy-component availability can change the result. Use a current Settings path rather than assuming screenshots or instructions for another release will match.
These commands are shortcuts, not a guarantee of compatibility or a substitute for understanding the change being made. Be especially cautious with environment variables, WMI, authorization settings, printer migration and update packages; preserve original settings or configuration before changing them.
