The iPhone 16e is a fast, capable entry-level iPhone—but it is not simply an iPhone 16 with a lower price. Compared with the regular iPhone 16, it gives up an ultrawide camera, MagSafe, Dynamic Island, Camera Control, several video modes, and some connectivity hardware.
That matters even more in August 2026: Apple’s newer iPhone 17e starts at the same $599 U.S. price while adding MagSafe, Qi2 charging, 256GB of base storage, and an A19 chip. The 16e makes the most sense when it is substantially discounted or when its compromises do not affect how you use a phone.
What the iPhone 16e still includes
The iPhone 16e has a 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, Face ID, USB-C, the Action button, Apple Intelligence support, an A18 chip, a 48MP Fusion main camera, IP68 water and dust resistance, and satellite-based Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My where available. It also supports ordinary Qi wireless charging.

U.S. models are eSIM-only; SIM arrangements vary by region. Apple’s technical specifications are the best reference for regional differences.

Camera and video features missing from the iPhone 16e
1. Rear ultrawide camera
The 16e has one 48MP Fusion rear camera rather than the regular iPhone 16’s additional 12MP ultrawide camera. The main camera can produce a 2x optical-quality view, but that is not the same as having a second lens.
The practical loss is flexibility: you cannot switch to a true wide-angle perspective for landscapes, architecture, interiors, or large groups. This is a limitation in versatility, not proof that the 16e’s main camera is poor.
2. Native 0.5x photography
There is no 0.5x ultrawide setting. Panoramas can cover more of a scene, but they are not a substitute for a single ultrawide photo, particularly when people or other moving subjects are involved.
3. Macro photography
Because the 16e lacks the autofocus-capable ultrawide camera used for close-up shooting, it does not offer the regular iPhone 16’s dedicated macro photography. Flowers, food, documents, and small objects may require you to move farther away or use an external lens.
4. Spatial video
The 16e cannot record Apple spatial video for compatible Apple Vision Pro viewing. It can still record ordinary 4K video and Dolby Vision HDR.

5. Cinematic mode
Cinematic mode is absent from the 16e’s rear-camera video features. This removes Apple’s built-in depth-of-field and rack-focus effect, but it does not prevent 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 60 frames per second.
6. Action mode
The 16e does not have Action mode’s aggressive stabilization for running, cycling, or other moving-camera footage. Standard video stabilization remains available.
7. Night mode portraits
The 16e supports Portrait mode and ordinary low-light photography, but it does not provide the same Night mode portrait capability as the dual-camera iPhone 16. “No Night mode” would therefore be an inaccurate description.
8. The latest Photographic Styles implementation
The 16e does not offer the newest Photographic Styles implementation listed for newer models. Apple’s feature labels can vary by model, region, and iOS version, so this should not be described as the total absence of every Photographic Styles option.
Design and controls
9. Dynamic Island
The iPhone 16e uses a conventional notch instead of Dynamic Island. Face ID still works normally—the notch does not mean the return of Touch ID.

What you lose is the Dynamic Island presentation for timers, calls, music, navigation, and some Live Activities. Most apps work normally without it, making this primarily a design and interface compromise rather than a performance problem. See Apple’s iPhone comparison for the model differences.

There is no dedicated Camera Control button. You can still open the camera from the Lock Screen, tap the Camera icon, or assign the Action button to Camera or Visual Intelligence.
However, the Action button does not reproduce Camera Control’s physical launch, shutter, video, and touch-and-slide adjustment interface. Frequent photographers will notice this more than casual users.
Charging and accessories
11. Native MagSafe
The 16e supports Qi wireless charging but has no built-in MagSafe magnets. That means no direct magnetic attachment to MagSafe chargers, wallets, stands, mounts, or battery packs.
Apple’s comparison data lists Qi charging up to 7.5W for the 16e. A magnetic case can add alignment for some accessories, but it does not turn the phone into a native MagSafe device.

12. Native Qi2 magnetic charging
The 16e also lacks native Qi2 magnetic charging. A compatible charger may still charge it, but the phone does not provide the built-in magnetic alignment and accessory experience of the iPhone 17e, which supports MagSafe and Qi2 charging up to 15W under Apple’s stated conditions.

13. Ultra Wideband
The 16e omits Apple’s Ultra Wideband chip. AirTags still work through the Find My network, but Precision Finding—the directional and distance-guided nearby search experience—is unavailable.
Some UWB-dependent car-key, home, and nearby-device features may also be unavailable or less precise.
14. Thread networking
Thread support is not listed for the 16e. This matters mainly to people building a smart home around Thread-enabled accessories. Most phone owners will never notice the omission.

The 16e supports Wi-Fi 6, while the standard iPhone 16 comparison lists Wi-Fi 7. Wi-Fi 7 offers more future-proofing and higher potential capacity, but the difference is unlikely to matter on ordinary broadband, older routers, or congested networks that cannot exploit it.

16. U.S. mmWave 5G
U.S. iPhone 16e models use sub-6GHz 5G and omit mmWave hardware. This only matters in locations where a carrier provides mmWave coverage and the phone would otherwise connect to it.
Do not generalize this to every country: cellular bands and regional iPhone models differ. Check Apple’s regional specifications and your carrier’s support before treating mmWave as a buying requirement.
Performance concession
17. A four-core GPU
The 16e’s A18 configuration has a four-core GPU, compared with the regular iPhone 16’s five-core GPU. This can mean less graphics headroom for demanding games and future GPU-heavy workloads.

What the iPhone 16e does not lack
- Apple Intelligence and Visual Intelligence support.
- Face ID and the Action button.
- USB-C connectivity.
- Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My via satellite where available.
- Crash Detection.
- A stabilized 48MP main camera with 1x and 2x optical-quality options.
- Portrait mode and 4K Dolby Vision video.
- OLED display and IP68 protection.
- Qi wireless charging, although not native MagSafe or Qi2 magnetic charging.

Is the iPhone 16e still worth buying in 2026?
Buy the 16e if it is heavily discounted, you prefer wired or ordinary Qi charging, you mostly use the 1x and 2x camera views, and you want Apple Intelligence, Face ID, USB-C, and a modern 6.1-inch OLED iPhone. It can be a sensible upgrade from an older iPhone SE, iPhone 11, or iPhone 12.
Be cautious if you already own MagSafe accessories, regularly photograph groups or scenery, depend on AirTag Precision Finding, use Wi-Fi 7 equipment, or want maximum gaming performance. Neither the 16e nor the 17e is the right budget choice if an ultrawide camera is essential; consider a standard or Pro iPhone instead.
At the same U.S. starting price of $599, the iPhone 17e is the stronger new-phone value for most buyers because it starts with 256GB, adds MagSafe and Qi2, and uses an A19 chip. The 16e becomes compelling mainly when clearance, trade-in, or carrier pricing creates a meaningful gap.
