The right WordPress resume theme makes your experience easy to scan and gives projects, skills, and contact details a clear place on the page. The comparison behind this title now lists 21 options—not 17—so treat the number in the headline as a legacy count, not the current size of the list. It also mixes ready-made themes with builders, which serve different needs.
What the current list includes
WPBeginner’s January 15, 2026 article, “21 Best WordPress Resume Themes for Your Online CV”, has 21 numbered entries, although its legacy URL contains “17-best.” The entries include purpose-built resume themes, multipurpose themes, and tools for building or customizing layouts. Its descriptions are editorial feature claims, not results from an independent comparative test.
Other 2026 coverage uses a different selection: HeroThemes compares options including SeedProd, Neve, Certy, Deep, Aveo, One Page Pro, unRovr, RyanCV, and an Elementor template. No reviewed source establishes a single best theme for every resume website.
Choose a theme or a builder
A ready-made theme
A resume-focused theme gives you a starting design intended for an online CV or resume website. Look for clear sections for work history, education, skills, projects, and contact information. For example, WordPress.org’s CV Resume Portfolio listing describes a portfolio-oriented CV design, while the Job Seeker Resume listing documents work history, education, skills, project sections, and Contact Form 7 support.

A builder or theme builder
A builder gives you more control to compose a custom page or site, rather than simply selecting a finished resume layout. That flexibility can help if your work needs a distinctive portfolio or landing page, but it also means more layout and setup choices. Confirm whether the product is a plugin, a theme, or both, and check which features are included in the plan you intend to use.
How to compare the options
- Resume structure: Check that the design gives experience, education, skills, projects, and contact details an understandable hierarchy. A visitor should be able to find the essentials without hunting through decorative sections.
- Portfolio presentation: If work samples matter to your profession, inspect how the theme handles project grids, galleries, images, and video. Treat capability descriptions as publisher or vendor claims unless they have been independently tested.
- Customization: Look for the editing approach you prefer, such as starter sites, block-editor compatibility, a theme customizer, or compatibility with a page builder. More control can mean more configuration.
- Cost and terms: The options span free, freemium, and paid products. Check the vendor’s current price, renewal terms, support, updates, and feature limits before committing; marketplace listings and prices change.
- Maintenance and compatibility: Check the theme’s current version and update information on WordPress.org or the vendor’s product page, then confirm compatibility with your WordPress setup and required plugins. An update date alone does not prove a theme is secure or high quality.
- Mobile readability: Preview the resume on a phone as well as a desktop. Check that headings, project images, and contact links remain easy to use at narrow widths.
Free directory examples and their listing signals
WordPress.org listings offer concrete details for comparing a few free directory themes. These figures are snapshots, not rankings: active-install counts do not establish that a theme is better or a good fit for a particular site.
Rank #2
| Theme | WordPress.org listing snapshot | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Resumee | Version 0.6.8; last updated December 9, 2025; 200+ active installations as listed September 30, 2026. | Check the listing and your own compatibility requirements before installing. |
| CV Resume Portfolio | Version 1.1.7; last updated September 10, 2026; 100+ active installations as listed September 30, 2026. | The listing describes a CV and portfolio-oriented theme. |
| My Resume | Version 2.5.5; last updated July 28, 2026; 100+ active installations as listed September 30, 2026. | Review the current listing for its features and compatibility before choosing. |
Installation counts and versions can change. The WordPress.org Themes directory is the place to confirm current listing details. Commercial marketplaces such as ThemeForest’s resume WordPress themes category also show paid options, but inventory, prices, sales, and update dates are volatile; verify an individual listing before relying on those details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set up an online resume website
A self-hosted WordPress site requires a domain name and web hosting, as well as WordPress and a theme. WPBeginner’s guide discusses those setup needs and recommends Bluehost with an offer for its readers; that is the publisher’s recommendation, not an independently established best host or a guarantee that the offer remains available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick Recap
- Choose and register a personal domain, then arrange web hosting suitable for your WordPress site.
- Install WordPress using your host’s current instructions or the WordPress installation guide.
- Install your chosen theme or builder using the product’s current instructions. Preview its sample pages and verify that the resume sections and portfolio features you need are available.
- Add and proofread your experience, education, skills, projects, and contact details. Test the finished pages on desktop and mobile before sharing the URL.
Which kind of option fits your resume?
- Choose a focused resume theme if you want a structured starting point for a conventional CV and do not need extensive custom layouts.
- Choose a portfolio-oriented theme if work samples are central to your pitch and the theme presents them clearly alongside your professional background.
- Choose a builder if you need greater layout control and are prepared to make more design and setup decisions.
- Choose a free directory theme if its current features meet your needs and its compatibility works for your WordPress installation; do not use installation counts as a quality score.
